Message from the Principal, Dr. Blair Message from the Principal, Dr. Blair

Our school year is off to a great and exciting start! Our Fall sports teams were here a couple of weeks before opening day, [sweating and] working hard; they are into their seasons now and are seeing the benefits of their pre-season hard work. On our first day of school, the students started the day with a motivational speaker – a WHS Hall of Famer - who talked about finding their purpose and having fun while doing it! He also talked to the students about what it means to be WHS PROUD. When I spoke to him over the summer, I told him I had two goals for the assemblies: community building and laughter. Thank you to WEOF and our Home and School Association for supporting our efforts to start the year off with positivity and enthusiasm. The students ended their first day with grade-level ice-cream socials. It was nice to see students reconnecting and sharing stories about the summer activities. It was a fun day kicking off what I hope to be our best year yet!

Upcoming PSAT and P-ACT Testing: 10th and 11th Grade Students Upcoming PSAT and P-ACT Testing: 10th and 11th Grade Students

PSAT testing for all 11th grade WHS students and Pre-ACT testing for all 10th grade WHS students will take place on the morning of October 8, 2025. Both the Pre-ACT and PSAT are digital this year and everything will be completed online at WHS. The PSATs and Pre-ACTs are good practice for the SAT or ACT and are free for all students. Please make sure your 10th and 11th grade students are on time to school that day as there are no make-up tests for the PSAT or Pre-ACT. Please ensure that your student has a fully charged laptop for the testing as well. Room assignments for the testing will be provided to all 10th and 11th grade WHS students in the coming weeks. Any student approved for College Board accommodations will have those accommodations during this testing. Any 10th or 11th grade student with pre-approved College Board accommodations must let their school counselor know at least 1 week in advance if they plan to decline their accommodations for this testing. Otherwise, they will be scheduled to test with their approved accommodations.

The schedule for October 8th is as follows:

  • 10th and 11th graders will report to WHS before 7:37 on October 8th.
  • Testing for 10th and 11th graders will conclude by 11:00 on the morning of October 8 and most 10th and 11th graders will be dismissed from WHS at 11:05 AM. District busing will be provided at that time. Students with the pre-approved accommodation of extended time will be afforded their extended time and district transportation home will be provided at 2:35 PM that afternoon (unless a parent/guardian is able to pick that student up earlier).
  • 9th and 12th grade students will not report to WHS on October 8th and will engage instead in asynchronous remote learning assigned by their teachers. We recommend students rely on our typical schedule and engage in their assignments from 7:37 AM -11:00 AM.
  • No WHS students will be transported to or from NMTCC and all absences for WHS students from NMTCC will be excused on October 8th.

In preparation for the P-ACT and PSAT, all students will report to a Homeroom IE on September 25th. 10th grade students will do a precheck on their computers for the digital P-ACT. 11th grade students will do a BlueBook readiness check and exam set-up for the digital PSAT. Please ensure that your student has a fully charged laptop for IE on September 25th. More information regarding October 8th testing at WHS will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. Any questions related to the schedule or testing should be directed to Mr. Morris’s and Mr. Brook’s office. Thank you.

17 Students Earn AP Capstone Diploma

We have 17 students who have earned the AP Capstone Diploma. The AP Capstone Program helps students develop critical thinking, research, collaboration, and presentation skills that are essential to academic success. To receive the AP Capstone Diploma, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research, and on four additional AP Exams of their choice. Unlike traditional AP subject exams with a single end-of-year, AP Seminar and AP Research assessments are project based and evaluate skills mastery through group projects, presentations, and individual essays completed throughout the year. Instead of focusing on one specific academic discipline, AP Seminar and AP Research are interdisciplinary: Students are encouraged to create research projects based on topics of personal interest. Students are assessed on the critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills needed to complete their projects. These students are creating the pathways for their future academic and professional careers by building highly sought-after skills in project management, presentation, collaboration, and research. Congratulations to the following Class of 2025 and Class of 2026 students: Josiah Feng (26), Sophia Kim (26), Petra Lee (26), Olivia Bellinzoni (25), Kristen DiGiovanni (25), Daeyoon Jeon (25), Olivia Lore (25), Chloe Michaels (25), Abhiraai Nath (25), Jayda Ryan (25), and Sevin Wang(25).

3 National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists

Congratulations to our National Merit Scholars (pictured)! This month, three Wissahickon High School students were recognized as semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program for this year. These seniors were selected based on their score on the PSAT/NMSQT test last fall. Semifinalists from across the country represent less than 1% of the nation’s high school graduating seniors. Congratulations to our WHS semifinalists on this outstanding accomplishment! We are so proud of Josiah Feng, Justin Pak, and Regan Szczepkowicz! They now have the opportunity to continue in the competition to be awarded a National Merit Scholarship.

These Posters are Out of This World

Ms. Shahbazi wants to give her students a shoutout for their hard work in creating solar system posters to kick off the school year in Environmental Science. The students learned that knowing our place in the solar system is the first step in studying the environment around us. Additionally, working collaboratively is the first step in creating a cooperative classroom for the year. Thanks for building community while also teaching the content!

A Bite-Sized World Tour

Students in Gourmet Foods have done an amazing job to begin the semester. Mr. Batdorf is so proud of them already! They started their culinary trip around the globe with stops in Germany, France, and El Salvador. The recipes they prepared were German Soft Pretzels, French Crepes, and Salvadoran Pupusas. The pupusa was our first recipe to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month. It is a very popular hand-held food made with corn flour and a variety of fillings that include cheese, refried beans, and meat.

On August 22, close to 400 ninth graders arrived on campus for our Freshman Orientation program facilitated by the one and only Wiss Link! The freshman arrived to the campus and were immediately met with welcoming (and loud!) teachers, staff, and student leaders. There was no turning back! They spent the morning participating in team-building activities and learning about the ins and outs of WHS. Most importantly, they had the chance to learn from and connect with our extremely dedicated and awesome Wiss Link student leaders. Those same 70 leaders spent the weekend before the first day of school delivering lawn signs to the Class of 2029 and came to school on the first day of school dressed in their Wiss Link T-shirt so the freshman could spot them. I am pretty sure all of our Wiss Link leaders logged in a lot of walked miles that first day in the building; they spent the day walking freshmen to classes and answering questions. These same leaders will continue meeting with their groups of freshman over the first two months of school, telling them about upcoming events, how to join clubs/activities, and how to communicate with teachers and get help to be successful academically. Thank you to our Wiss Link student leaders! You are THE BEST! I saw so many of you reaching out to freshmen, even before they asked for help! I am really proud of you. And, thank you to our Wiss Link Faculty Advisors: Ms. VanScoy, Ms. Lehman, Ms. Chang, and Dr. Leister. The program’s success is a reflection of you.

Meet Our Exchange Students Meet Our Exchange Students

WHS is lucky to have four exchange students this school year. I had the chance to sit down with Chedi, Jona, Jonathan, and Niklas and ask them questions about their experiences in our country and at our school. They shared that they love WHS and our students – that makes me very proud. I hope our students from WHS reach out to these students and continue to welcome them to our community. We can all learn from each other! Check out their answers to some of the fun questions we talked about!

Wissahickon High School is excited to continue with our efforts to develop an inclusive school climate approach that highlights the great work that we are doing on a daily basis. This year, the efforts will be led by Wissahickon High School's Town Hall! The desire and willingness of these students to work in collaboration with other clubs and affinity groups to create activities, opportunities, and programming that will allow for greater peer to peer connections is something we should all be looking forward to! Stay tuned for announcements from our Town Hall and Mr. Brooks about all of the events that will be sure to bring us all together as we strive to create school that is No Place For Hate!

WHS Camerata Hosts 9/11 Memorial Concert

On Thursday, September 11th, our WHS Camerata held their annual 9/11 Memorial Concert, offering a place for our community to reflect on the historical and devastating tragedy that impacted our nation twenty-four years ago. The program was created back in 2002, by the then Camerata, in order to provide a safe, welcoming space in our community for people to come together and just be, if they’d care to. Many people in our community remember that day – and recall the experience of simply not knowing what to do or where to go; this feeling was the motivation for the memorial. The students, under the direction of Mr. Conahan, did a wonderful job honoring those lives lost, the heroes of 9/11, and their families. Thank you for the continued effort to remind us to “never forget”.

September SEL Theme: Belonging September SEL Theme: Belonging

Each month, our staff will be focusing on a different SEL skill with our students; these skills foster connection, celebrate individuality, promote a collective community, and highlight the importance of relationships. Our theme for the month of September is Belonging. There is no better way to start off the year than with an intentional effort to remind all our students that they matter and are an important and valued part of our community. I am always so proud of our students because I watch them welcome new students to our school, connect with a student who might be lost in the hallway, encourage new members to join our clubs, and sit with a student in cafeteria who may not have lunch with any of their friends. Helping students feel that they belong seems easy and natural for so many of our students and seeing those stand out moments makes my job all the more special. @ProudToBeWHS!

Cultural Celebrations Cultural Celebrations

Wiss Nation is proud to acknowledge National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th - October 15th). This period in the United States is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the history, culture, contributions, and influence of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. Additionally, throughout the month of October, Wiss Nation will recognize the contributions of Italian Americans to the United States. In 1989 Congress and President George H.W. Bush issued a special proclamation to acknowledge and honor the achievements and contributions of Italian Americans. Additionally, in September, WHS recognizes the importance of Rosh Hashanah beginning on September 22nd. In October we also will recognize the importance of Yom Kippur beginning on October 1st and National Coming Out Day on October 11th.

The Hispanic/Latine Association (HLA) kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month on September 15th! This month, they are celebrating with weekly events to educate the WHS community on cultural traditions and celebrate our students and their diverse Hispanic/Latine backgrounds. So far this month, students played games like No Sabo and La Lotería while enjoying chips, guacamole, and spicy candy. Later this month, there will be an opportunity for a dance lesson for traditional dances like Caballo Dorado, a Spanish Movie Day, and a final celebration in the Square Gym after school on October 14th to end Hispanic Heritage Month. All are welcome!

FIELD HOCKEY

The Trojans are off to a strong start this season with a 5–3 record! We kicked things off with great momentum and have faced some tough competition that’s pushed us to grow and refocus.

Our practices have zeroed in on creating more attacking opportunities and finishing strong in the circle. The team’s energy and intensity—despite long school days—is fueling real progress on the field.

Defensive grit continues to be a standout strength, keeping us competitive in high-pressure matchups. On the offensive side, we’re taking more risks and finding new ways to generate scoring chances—and it’s paying off.

This group is determined, focused, and committed to improving every time they step on the field. We’re excited to see what the rest of September brings!

Leading the way are senior captains Elise Lombardot and Nicolette Agassi, joined by standout singles player Alexa Bowers, who round out Wissahickon's top three.

In doubles action:

• Sophia Cheng (Jr.) and Molly Brinker (Fr.) anchor the first doubles team

• Juliet O'Farrell and Libby Lucas (both Sophomores) hold down second doubles

• Skylar Rostolsky and Virginia Spellman (Sophomores) bring grit to third doubles

• Bela Shah (Soph.) and Chloe Lee (Fr.) round out the lineup at fourth doubles

Also, congratulations to Elise Lombardot and Alexa Bowers on earning second and third place finishes respectively in the SOL Liberty Division Singles Championship!

GOLF

Congratulations to the Wiss Golf Team on winning the SOL Liberty Division Championship. The team finished the regular season in first place in the Suburban One Liberty Division with a 11–2 overall record. Their success is driven by remarkable depth—ten players have recorded sub-40 scores in at least one match, demonstrating consistency across the roster.

As the season enters its final stretch, the team is focused on advancing to District and State competition.

CHEER

The cheerleading team has kicked off the season with impressive energy and dedication, bringing strong spirit to the sidelines at football games and making great strides in skill development. Their commitment has set a positive tone for the year.

We’re excited to invite prospective athletes to an Open Gym on October 6, offering a chance to explore cheerleading and build foundational skills. Additionally, a second tryout will be held on October 20 for those interested in joining the team for the upcoming competition and basketball season.

We look forward to welcoming new talent and continuing to grow our program!

CROSS COUNTRY

Our Cross Country teams had an outstanding showing at the Briarwood Invitational at Belmont Plateau last Saturday. Both the Girls' Varsity and JV teams ran their way to a second-place finish and were awarded custom hats for their efforts!

The girls' teams were a force to be reckoned with, bringing home a total of seven medals. Berkeley Marcelis dominated the Varsity race, finishing in first place! She was followed by Maddie O'Donnell in 4th and Kiera Werner in 13th. The JV girls also performed exceptionally well, with Emily Hartkorn (2nd), Ava Weber (3rd), Grace O'Donnell (9th), and Olivia Fry-Palma (20th) all earning medals.

The boys' teams also had a great day, with two runners medaling in the Varsity race: Emmett Vandegrift (24th) and Ray Pelletier (25th).

The teams are now preparing to continue their league competitions this Wednesday at PW. We wish them the best of luck

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The Wissahickon Lady Trojans are building for the future, and the results are already starting to show. With a new focus on changing the culture and elevating their game, this young team is showing incredible heart and hustle on the court.

The offense is in good hands with the dynamic setting duo of sophomore Hannah Seder and freshman Josie Shakespeare. They are consistently feeding a powerful group of hitters, including senior Anyah Carter, juniors Nicole Niesborella, Callie Wright, Elle Coughlin, and Lyla Ruegg, and the sophomore-freshman punch of Naomi Malaska and Maddie Thomson.

On defense, juniors Kirsten McFadden, sophomore Kaitlyn Lang, and freshman Deanna Yuan are holding down the back row with grit and determination.

While a few early-season injuries have tested the team's depth, it has also created opportunities for some up-and-coming talent. Freshman players like Emma Choo and Kylie Meuanthongchanh have already made an impact, gaining valuable varsity experience that will pay off for years to come.

The team is focused on the second half of the season and ready to battle their way up the standings. Come out and cheer on the Lady Trojans as they continue their journey!

FOOTBALL

The Trojans football team is having an impressive start to the season! Their success is a testament to the team's discipline, commitment to a detail-oriented approach, and a strong "team-first" mentality.

With solid leadership from our seniors and great talent from our younger players, the team is focused on consistent improvement and competing at their very best.

BOYS SOCCER

The boys soccer team had a good preseason and had a positive start to the season, showcasing their dedication and hard work every day on the field. They've built a solid foundation during the preseason and are now looking to finish the year strong.

A big shout-out goes to our senior captains, Charlie Fortescue and Jackson Horvat, for their outstanding leadership. Their positive attitude and encouragement have been a huge factor in keeping the team focused and motivated.

With a current record of 4-5-1, the team is fired up to take on the second half of the season. They're ready to fight for some key wins and earn a spot in the playoffs. Keep an eye out for their upcoming games and come out to support them!

WATER POLO

Our Boys Water Polo team is making waves this season, kicking things off with an impressive 5-3 record. The team recently swept the Upper Perkiomen Tournament with a perfect 3-0 record and followed that up with a decisive win against Pennridge. This is a team on the rise, showing incredible improvement and development since the first game.

The Trojans are guided by strong leadership, including Captains Dean Bowers and Henry Weir, along with Seniors Sam Trapani and Goalie Kyle Mair. The younger classes are also stepping up in a big way, with key contributions from Juniors Leo Yaghooty and Mason Latchford, and standout Freshman Holden Szpacs.

After a brief break this weekend, the team is fired up and ready to continue their winning streak. Come cheer them on this Friday, September 26th at 4:40 PM as they compete in the Beast of the East Tournament right here at Wissahickon!

Our Counselor Team would like to remind you that September is Suicide Awareness Month, a time to reflect, talk, and support one another. It's important to remember that mental health matters and it’s okay to ask for help. Together, we can create a supportive community where everyone feels safe and heard. If you suspect that your teen might be thinking about suicide, talk to your teen right away. Don't be afraid to use the word "suicide." Talking about suicide won't plant ideas for self-harm in a child's head. Ask how your teenager is feeling and listen. Don't dismiss your teen's problems. Instead, reassure your child of your love. Remind your teen that together, you can work through whatever is going on. Click here for tips on navigating a mental health crisis.

Academic Supports Academic Supports

STARS Tutoring is now up and running! STARS is a student-to-student tutoring initiative. Tutors provide academic support in subject areas that they have excelled to those in need of extra help. Students will be paired based on subject and scheduling availability. Students will meet on a 1:1 basis or within a small group. Meetings will occur during Study Hall, I/E, or after school by appointment with Mr. Fleming. Late buses are available. Applications are available in the Counseling Office and the Library. Please contact Mr. Fleming with any questions.

Our Math Lab is open during the school day in the Library. Students can visit the Lab for extra support, re-teaching, pre-teaching, and/or second chance learning opportunities. Also in the Library, this year, we have a WHS Genuis Bar. Students can get help from a peer in all courses – be sure to drop in and check it out!

Our weekly schedule for Extended Learning Time (ELT) will be posted for students on Schoology each week; ELT is an after-school tutoring program designed to provide academic support in our core subject areas. It’s an opportunity for students to get extra help from a content-area teacher. Any student can plan to attend ELT for help with assignments, homework, projects, re-teaching, pre-teaching, extended time, or second chance learning. Please encourage your WHS student to attend. ELT runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:45-4:15 PM in the Library. Students will be assisted by a teacher and/or an NHS or STARS student with their subject.

Dual Credit Opportunities

Dual Credit with Wissahickon High School and Montgomery County Community College offers students a valuable opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school. This program not only accelerates academic progress but also reduces the cost of college by allowing students to complete courses at a fraction of the usual tuition. It helps students gain experience with college-level coursework, boosting their confidence and readiness for higher education, while providing a head start on their college careers. Please reach out to your school counselor or reference the Program of Studies for a complete listing of courses eligible for Dual Credit. Your student’s teacher will present information about how students can get enrolled in the program. Montgomery County Community College will be visiting WHS on Monday, October 6th from 10:00am-12:30pm in the Audion.

We are happy to provide an opportunity for our students to receive breakfast (in the Lower Café) each morning. Please encourage your student to get the day started off with the nutritious options available each day. If they miss the chance to grab breakfast in the Lower Café, they can grab breakfast items in the Library before homeroom each day!

Please make sure to fill out the Free and Reduced application for lunches if not already completed. This can be found on the school website under the Food Service Department.

Safe2Say Something

It is important that our students know that they play a pivotal role in the safety of WHS – when they see something concerning, I continue to encourage them to say something to a trusted adult. Please help me reiterate the importance of that through conversations at home. Together, we can keep our students and staff safe!

As a reminder, Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” before it is too late. With Safe2Say Something, it’s easy and confidential to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies.

Here’s how it works:

  • Submit an anonymous tip report through the Safe2SaySomething system
  • The Crisis Center reviews, assesses and processes all submissions
  • The Crisis Center sends all submissions to school administration and/or law enforcement for intervention
  • If needed, the Crisis Center may contact the tipster anonymously through the app

You can also access Safe2Say via our district website.

As a reminder to all of our students, together, we need to keep our community safe. Please be sure not to open any outside doors and please alert a teacher or administrator about any concerns you have. Thank you for the teamwork!
