Principal's Message
Hello,
Our students are adjusting well to the recent time change. Although they are adjusting, please be aware that they may not be going to sleep any earlier to account for the change. Students usually lose about 30 minutes of sleep per night during this transition period because they aren't always aware they are giving up an hour in the morning, and they don’t actively adjust their bedtime. This is an opportunity for you to have a low-stakes discussion with your student to encourage them to get proper rest.
Please help me congratulate the Decatur High School Literary Team and Coach Shelby Coffin on securing multiple Regional Champions last week. DHS had winners in the Personal Essay, Argumentative Essay, Literary Analysis, Domestic Extemporaneous Speech, International Extemporaneous Speech, and Dramatic Monologue categories. DHS also had runner-ups in Girls Solo and Humorous Monologue. The team as a whole finished in second place.
Sincerely,
Duane Sprull, Ed.D.

🥾 TAP Students Conquer the Appalachian Trail!
Our Teaching as a Profession (TAP) Year 3–4 students recently showed incredible resilience during their Outdoor Ed hiking trip to Amicalola Falls and the Appalachian Trail approach. These future educators tackled a challenging 12-mile trek, including those infamous 600 "monster" steps, all while maintaining a positive spirit and a sense of community. We are so proud of our students' toughness and the kindness they showed one another on the trail. A huge thank you to our supportive parents, our dedicated chaperones (Ms. Thibadeau, Ms. Loranger, and Mr. Custer), and our leadership team, Ms. Smiley and Dr. Spruill, for making this adventurous learning experience possible for our TAP explorers!
🐾 Future Bulldogs: Educators in the Making!
Our Teaching as a Profession (TAAP) Year 2 students took their passion for leadership on the road last Thursday, March 5th, for the annual Future Georgia Educators Day at UGA! These 26 dedicated students spent the day in Athens immersed in professional workshops and campus tours, gaining a firsthand look at the rewarding world of education. We are so proud of these future leaders for representing Decatur High with such professionalism and exploring how they can impact the next generation of learners. 🍎✨

DHS Fencing Club ends its 4th competitive season on a high!
Congratulations to the men and women of Decatur's fencing team who participated in the 2026 Georgia High School Fencing League (GHSFL) Team Championships at Innovation Academy in Alpharetta, GA this past weekend.
Led by Team Captain Lexington Kennerly (Sr), the women's team, including fencers Remie Bourque (So), Cori Grant (So), and Diana Pollidore (Jr), made Decatur High School history finishing 4th overall and earning Decatur's first team championship medals and trophy. To achieve this milestone, the DHS women defeated perennial fencing powerhouse Alpharetta 45 to 44 coming from behind in the final leg of the 9-leg relay to advance to the semi-finals, before falling to Innovation Academy in a hard-fought match for bronze.
The DHS men led by Ben Taylor (Sr.), including fencers Aidan Oldham (Sr, Team Captain), Ben Ragland (So), and Bennett Occhialini (So) put up a valiant fight before being narrowly defeated by John’s Creek High School in the first round of competition. Despite the early exit, they finished the season by improving their overall league ranking to 10th.
Preceding this team’s event, the GHSFL held the annual individual championships where Decatur’s Diana Pollidore finished with a 7th place medal.
Throughout the championship events, our fencers demonstrated the very best in competition, teamwork, and sportsmanship and our parents showed their Decatur spirit. The team championship wraps up the 4th season of competitive fencing at Decatur High School and 5th year of the DHS Fencing Club. We look forward to another great season next year! Be on the lookout for information in early August about participating in the club.
