National Association of Student Councils Scholarship Recipient

Lyon County School District is proud to spotlight Jackson Hohnholz, Fernley High School’s Student Body President, for earning the prestigious National Association of Student Councils (NASC) Scholarship in the amount of $1,500.

Jackson was selected as a finalist from more than 1,000 applicants nationwide, an extraordinary accomplishment that reflects his dedication to leadership, service, and student engagement.

For Jackson, leadership has always been about serving others.

“One of my biggest leadership philosophies that I have applied throughout my student council career is putting others above myself. Many times I have given up my own time and energy to give back to my community and school, simply for others. It may seem like a daunting task, but it truly has been so rewarding. Leadership to me is serving others before myself.”

Service is not just a concept for Jackson — it’s action. One project especially close to his heart is volunteering at the Fernley Rotary’s Thanksgiving Feed.

“Every Thanksgiving, I go to the Wigwam to serve warm meals to any community member that comes to get one. This project means a lot to me because I get to connect with members of my community, including those that come to get a meal and those that I volunteer with. It’s especially meaningful to me knowing that I get the opportunity to feed those a warm meal who may not have access to one at home.”

Jackson’s leadership also shines in how he encourages school spirit and involvement.

“What motivates me to stay engaged in school is simply how much fun it is! Many students refuse to participate in events or dress up in our student section themes because they think it is embarrassing or boring. I always try to encourage them to participate, because I have made some of my most fun and meaningful memories at school events, surrounded by students with spirit who are there to have a great time and foster a sense of community at my school.”

Receiving the NASC Scholarship represents more than financial support for Jackson — it represents recognition of years of dedication.

“Being selected for the NASC scholarship means so much more to me than the financial assistance for college. Many students don’t realize the amount of time, work, and energy that goes into student council. On many occasions I have put my all into events and initiatives, leaving myself drained and exhausted. Receiving this scholarship shows that all of my hard work has been recognized, and I am honored to receive it.”

Although he has not yet committed to a college, his top choice is the University of California, Santa Barbara. While he looks forward to experiencing something new, his long-term goals bring him back home.

After college, Jackson hopes to return to Fernley to serve his community — whether on the City Council, as City Manager, or in another role serving the city he has always called home.

And his advice to fellow students?

“It may sound silly, but I would like to share one piece of advice — lock in! I have been faced with many difficult tasks during my life, and before I can worry about how daunting they may seem, I tell myself to lock in. That has seriously saved me. Take every opportunity that is given to you even if you may not think you have time for it. Lock in!”

Jackson embodies the core tenets of the National Association of Student Councils — leadership, service, student voice, and engagement. We are incredibly proud of the example he sets for Fernley High School and for Lyon County School District.

Congratulations, Jackson — your leadership is making a difference today and will continue to shape your community for years to come.
