Message from the Principal
Dear SMS Families,
We kicked off the school year with an action-packed September, filled with engaging activities for students and staff. Highlights included team-building events for our 6th graders, Buffalo Bills-themed spirit days, Open House Night, school picture day, thrilling modified athletic competitions, and a vibrant homecoming spirit week. The momentum continues as our clubs launch regular activities, athletic competitions carry on, and field trips begin. We're especially excited about our new Junior FFA program, which has already attracted a strong following.
As we move into October, I want to remind everyone that this is often when the academic demands of the school year become more apparent. We recognize that adjusting from summer to school routines can be challenging. To support students who need extra help, our after-school academic assistance program runs every Tuesday and Thursday, with bus transportation provided afterward. Students can sign up by 10:00 AM on those days at the bulletin board near Rooms 101 and 102 (across from Mrs. Heichberger and Mr. Baykal’s classrooms) to arrange transportation. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Main Office.
Respectfully,
Dr. Fisher

September Students of the Month
During the month of September, Springville Middle School focused on the character trait of Respect. Respect means treating others the way you would like to be treated — with kindness, fairness, and understanding. It also means valuing yourself, your teachers, classmates, school property, and the diverse perspectives that make our community unique.
Respect can be shown in many ways, big and small. Simple actions, such as listening when someone is speaking, using polite language, following school rules, and taking care of shared spaces, are all examples of respect in action. Respect also means appreciating differences, even when we don’t always agree, and working together to create a positive and welcoming environment.
By practicing respect, we create a safe and supportive school environment where everyone can succeed. The October character trait is citizenship.

Ag Class with Ms. Uhrinek
The new agriculture class is off to a great start at SMS! Last week, eighth-grade students in Ms. Uhrinek's class welcomed New York State FFA Officers and an officer from California's FFA to participate in a special activity. In small groups, the students were given "seed packets" with instructions on how to ensure each plant would succeed. The instructions included the planting depth and distance, but also had tips like "cucumbers and tomatoes have a toxic relationship," which helped to inform the layout of the garden on their desks. After planning out their garden, they reflected on their own "chaos gardens," considering who is around them who builds them up. From there, the students were asked to write letters of gratitude to someone who supports them. Many wrote heartfelt messages to family members and friends.
A Sub for a Sub
Students in Mr. Reese's 8th-grade science class constructed submarines from bottles, tape and Alka-Seltzer tablets to attempt a descent and resurfacing. The team with the most successful trip received a sub sandwich!
First Ever Middle School FFA Meeting
Our middle school FFA held its first-ever meeting this past Thursday. Students spent time learning about the different opportunities FFA has to offer. They then made their own FFA emblem cookies while learning what each part of the emblem means. We are so excited to be able to offer FFA to our middle schoolers and can’t wait to see what great things they do this year!
Homecoming Spirit Week
Modified Sports Update
After a late August, early September start date for our four modified sports teams; all have officially begun competition against other schools and to date, have done very well!
The schedules for girls volleyball, boys & girls soccer and football can be found on our SGI athletics website. The number of participants throughout all our programs is outstanding- and is largely due to the
tremendous leadership- and level of excitement they (coaches) bring day in- and day out!
Please select an upcoming HOME contest to attend, I’m certain this will be an enjoyable experience for all as our 7th and 8th grade students continue to learn the fundamentals- and skill sets connected to sports!
