Prepping for Conferences

A newsletter is a great way to collect & communicate information about students. This example of a student update has blocks for all of the basics, as well as some helpful resources as you prepare for conferences.

A text block at the top of the template -- like this -- is a good way to share an overview of your class. An inspiring quote goes a long way and communicates your values as a teacher.

A Great Collection of Resources
As you get ready for parent-teacher conferences (both mentally and with your materials), here's a list of great resources to help you with your comments and conversations, including resources in Spanish.

Peer Relationships Peer Relationships

Marco has made friends easily this year, and often takes the lead in games with his peers. He is friendly and well-liked.

At times, he can be so enthusiastic that he interrupts. This is a skill for him to work on.

Classroom Behavior Classroom Behavior

Marco is polite and well-behaved. He raises his hand and follows directions well. He is kind to others, and jumps to help when it's time to clean up.

Marco is a true leader when it comes to classroom behavior; he is always the first to complete his job on the daily job chart.

Work Habits Work Habits

Marco is responsible about completing classwork and homework. He is very interested in math and science, and enjoys working through the problems and procedures in those classes.

He finds our Humanities work less interesting, and sometimes he needs to be called back to attention. I think the right topic will help him catch fire!

Goals for the Upcoming Term Goals for the Upcoming Term

In sharing improvement goals for students, think about the SMART framework. Goals should be: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Timely.

A goal I would like to challenge Marco to achieve in the upcoming quarter is to read one book independently from start to finish.

  1. He should choose a book during our weekly Library class,
  2. Keep it in his desk for our daily independent reading,
  3. Complete his weekly book updates each Friday
  4. Conference with me about it whenever he feels stuck until he has finished the book.
A Guide for Giving Difficult Feedback
Typically, we struggle to find the right words to tell parents/caregivers about ways their child might be causing or experiencing difficulty. This post has some good suggestions for how to approach sharing tough news with families.

Share a Useful Resource with Parents
This one is about surviving a difficult parent conference, which might not be necessary for you, but use the space to share a resource that you think would be helpful for parents to know.
