NHS Seniors Receive Prestigious Community Awards

NHS seniors, Paige Sullivan and Faith Murray, have earned the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award, for the 2023 Gold Award class. The Gold Award process not only enables girls to help their communities, but also provides tangible benefits such as building professional skills, scholarship opportunities, network building, and monetary incentives for girls interested in joining the military.

Senior Elizabeth Anthony has earned her Stars and Stripes Award through American Heritage Girls. The goal of the Stars & Stripes Award is the experience and the realization of the servant’s heart that is needed to lead with integrity and humility. The award procedure and project benefit a candidate’s community and develop her skills in organization, communication, time management, and project management.

Congratulations Paige, Faith, and Elizabeth!

Helping Families in Need

In partnership with Giant in Dillsburg and their Fill-A-Plate program, the district was able to receive a donation of non-perishable food items to give out to families. Scott Shedlock, Director of Food Services, and Theresa Shroyer, District Social Worker, were able to connect with customers and collaborate with staff at Giant on 1/28/23 to talk more about the various ways that we are able to support families in our district, including through the use of the Fill-A-Plate Program. Thank you to all who donated!!

NMS 8th Grade Super Bowl

The Philadelphia Eagles did not claim the Vince Lombardi Trophy this year, but their name alone gave them the lead in Mrs. Albert’s eighth grade English classes. The opposing teams became the focus of an English class challenge the week leading up to Super Bowl LVII. While examining Greek and Latin roots, students learned that the names Philadelphia and Chiefs both come from root words, ‘phil’ meaning love and ‘chiev’ meaning head or top of. Students raced the clock to record words containing these two roots, with the option to support one team’s root over the other. So even though the Eagles fell short on Super Bowl Sunday, students rounded up more words related to Philadelphia than Chiefs. More importantly, students made connections between their language and the real world and multiplied their vocabulary in the process. Students submitted some impressive words such as philosophy, anglophile, bibliophile, philosophical, toxophily, philology, philharmonic, hemophiliac, mischievous, handkerchief, chieftain, chiefdom, and achievement, just to name a few. The final score: Philadelphia Eagles 126, Kansas City Chiefs 75.

Fiddler On the Roof Tickets - On Sale for March 3rd, 4th, and 5th Performances!

Tickets for Northern High School's musical, "Fiddler on the Roof" are available on www.showix4u.com beginning February 1, 2023. Tickets are $12 Adults and $10 Students/Seniors

Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, Fiddler on the Roof is the brainchild of Broadway legends, Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince; songwriters, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick; and bookwriter, Joseph Stein. Touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty, this universal show is a staple of the musical theatre canon.

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. With iconic and beloved songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset," "If I Were a Rich Man" and "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," Fiddler on the Roof is the perfect mix of audience-pleasing humor and heart.

The HS Cast consists of: Tevye-Joshua Bissell, Golde-Adeline Lusk, Tzeitel-Jocelyn Valdez, Hodel-Evelyn Bushey, Chava-Leonie Westbrook, Shprintze-Megan Ingraham, Bielke-Kylie Oyler, Yente-Gabby Galino, Motel-Elijah Clark, Perchik-Nicholas Keilholtz, Fyedka-Ron Saunders, Lazar Wolf-Sam McCarty, Mordcha-Taylyn Wolfgang, Rabbi-Becca Purnell, Mendel-Lee Snyder, Avram-Olivia Mains, Nachum-Nala Yates, Grandma Tzeitel/Russian-Ella Falck, Fruma-Sarah-Wini Haller, Constable-TJ Miller, Shaindel-Nasaria Reza, and Ensemble-Ella Fetrow, Hannah Gelbaugh, Morgan Sober, Anna Gamble, Willow Slothour, Alyssa Zahurak, Avary Falck, Lucas Maylock, Persia Bishop, Hannah Boyce, Fiona Grimm, Zoe Spahr.
