DISTRICT SHOUT-OUT!
This month we would like to recognize the Leaders and Participants from the Washington County school districts who were involved in the OVESC Common Professional Development Day, held on Friday, October 27, 2023, at the campus of Warren Local School District. There were over 650 participants and 100 session presenters at this year’s event. The day began with a keynote from Dr. Jim Mahoney and continued with approximately 125 professional development sessions available throughout the day for teachers to attend. The day ended with Teacher Based Teams meetings for grade levels and content areas to further support the collaboration and networking opportunities for the schools in the county.
This event was first held in September 2022 to provide a greater variety of professional development opportunities for the entire county. The districts involved this year were: Belpre City Schools, Crooksville City Schools, Fort Frye Local Schools, Frontier Local Schools, Marietta City Schools, Warren Local Schools, Wolf Creek Local Schools, and the Washington County Career Center. Many thanks go to the leadership and planning efforts of the OVESC, Warren Local, and the many presenters who provided sessions in their areas of expertise and practice!
Keynote speaker for the day was Dr. Jim Mahoney, a seasoned educator who has dedicated his life to enhancing educational opportunities for all students. Dr. Mahoney began his career in education at Frontier Local School District. His extensive career has encompassed roles as a superintendent, principal, and teacher. In 2001, he assumed the position of the inaugural executive director at Battelle for Kids. Today, Jim holds the position of Assistant Professor of Practice at Ohio University's Voinovich School and serves as an educator in residence for the Buckeye Association of School Administrators.
OVESC Superintendent Dalton Summers commented: "This is the second year for the OVESC Common PD Day and we set the bar pretty high last year in that we had good participation and good feedback from our member districts. This year we even had more. I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out today, with the speakers we brought in and the teachers who stepped up to lead sessions. This is a huge opportunity for our area to bring in between 600 and 700 teachers from this region to share what they do best with each other. It has a positive impact allowing our member districts' educators to collaborate, share ideas, network, and form relationships that they can build upon throughout the year as they continue to educate our students."
