This month’s Alumni Spotlight shines on Kathleen Warner Yeates, MHS '78, tracing her journey from a versatile performer and curious student at Methacton to an accomplished international career in theater, film, and creative entrepreneurship.

Kathleen, known as Kathy, joined the Methacton community at age 13. At a young age, she already possessed a strong aptitude for the arts, and her school years were defined by a diverse range of interests—from singing in the choir and acting in musicals to playing lacrosse, softball, and cheerleading. However, performing always stood out as her greatest passion:

"I always made my younger siblings do plays with me at home as a child, and I loved to watch Shirley Temple and sing to the Sound of Music album."

A natural performer, Kathy made her Methacton stage debut at 14 as Ethyl Toffelmier in The Music Man. By her senior year, Kathy’s growth as a performer culminated in being cast as Gypsy Rose Lee in the musical Gypsy. It was a "star turn" role, demanding a sophisticated mix of vulnerability and absolute confidence.

"I was honored to play Gypsy Rose Lee in the musical Gypsy with an amazing cast and creative team."

Beyond the stage, Kathy was crowned Homecoming Queen her senior year to "the unanimous cheers of the crowd!" as the yearbook reads. She remains deeply grateful for her "dedicated, creative, and supportive" teachers, noting:

"Naturally, the teachers who did the musicals had a huge influence on me, such as Stephen Brown, Barry Prager, Emma McGuinness, and all the amazing team around them."

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

After Methacton, Kathy attended Kutztown State University to study art education. However, after being cast as the lead in Cabaret her freshman year, she found the courage to switch her major to Related Arts and Theatre. Following graduation, she performed at the Hope Summer Repertory Theatre in Michigan before earning a Graduate Assistantship for Villanova University’s Master’s program.

Her time at Villanova provided elite training and high-level exposure to Philadelphia’s theater scene:

"I was cast as Mercy Lewis in The Crucible at the Philadelphia Drama Guild, then in Childe Byron at the Wilma Theatre, and When it Hits the Air at the Walnut Street theatre, etc. and finally it lead to a contract working for The Great American Melodrama Theatre."

Eventually she moved to New York and was working off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway in a few productions when she met the man who would become her husband, Ray Yeates. However, her life took an unexpected turn:

"I was privileged to move to Dublin, Ireland, in 1999 when my husband's first wife passed away leaving 4 young children from that marriage. I inherited an instant family and added one of my own as well, raising 5 children in total. I am deeply blessed to have a large and loving family, and now we have 5 grandchildren as well!"

In 2004, Kathy founded Flying Turtle Productions, a drama school, performing arts company and film production house, to balance her artistic career with her growing family. Based in the historic Ireland Institute in Dublin, the school provides classes in performing arts and screenwriting, alongside specialized corporate and wellness programs. As Director, Kathy manages a professional faculty and produces work in the studio’s intimate onsite theatre. She also remains a frequent collaborator with Trinity College Dublin, contributing to research on embodied learning techniques through the Sorgente Project and the Arts and Education Research Group.

She eventually returned to the spotlight, securing a Dublin agent and landing the role of Aunt Carroll in the 2017 BBC/PBS mini-series Little Women, appearing opposite Angela Lansbury and Maya Hawke. Her career has continued to flourish in film and television, including a role as Edie Williams in USA Network's The Rainmaker and a featured appearance as Agatha Devon in the upcoming season of the BritBox/Channel 5 production, The Hardacres.

"It was a huge honor and privilege to work with Angela Lansbury and Maya Hawke in Little Women amongst a stellar cast."

Beyond acting, Kathy is an accomplished director and voice-over artist. Her experience teaching in Dublin evolved into professional directing roles, including projects at the Abbey National Theatre’s Peacock stage. As a voice artist, she has worked on major films like the remastered The Bridge of San Luis Rey—alongside legends like Robert De Niro and Kathy Bates—and voices multiple characters in the animation Little Caesar. A member of the Writers Guild of Ireland, she remains passionate about devising new plays and collaborating on original works.

ADVICE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS

Kathy has some important words of wisdom for current Methacton students:

"Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually so that you can find the path that works for you. Learn to ask for help when you need it, and balance your days and weeks with work, growth, and joy."
