Halloween Week fun!
Student Council has HALLOWEEN FUN planned for this week!
Wednesday - Halloween Kahoot during 4th hour
Thursday - Wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month:
- Wearing pink for breast cancer support is a practice that started with the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the early 1990s, which handed out pink ribbons at its Race for the Cure events. The color became a universal symbol for the cause, representing hope, femininity, and support, while also serving to raise awareness for early detection and prevention, promote funding for research, and show solidarity with those affected by the disease.
Why wear pink
Symbol of support: Pink is a symbol of hope and solidarity for people with breast cancer, their families, and healthcare professionals.
Raising awareness: Wearing pink draws attention to breast cancer, encouraging important conversations about prevention, screening, and early detection.
- Community and hope: Events like "Wear Pink" are a way to bring communities together to show unity and determination in the fight against breast cancer. It's a visible way to offer support to the individuals and families that are, or have been in the fight against breast cancer.
Friday - Halloween costume contest. We will still carry on the tradition of showing a slide show of pictures and having students vote. Voting will take place during lunches.
HSU hosts ofrenda this week
RWHS Hispanic Students United (HSU) invites the Red Wing High School community to add to the Dรญa de Muertos ofrenda on display in the locker bay this week.
The students of Hispanic Students United set up an ofrenda in the locker bay and starting Monday, they want to encourage everyone to bring in photos to honor loved ones or pets that have passed. Mrs. Bray will also have a table outside of her classroom so that students can bring in a photo of a loved one or pet and write a letter to place on the ofrenda.

Check out the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Community.
Did you know that a gender split persists among computer scientists? Data shows that the imbalance currently is 79% male to 21% female in the field.
One component of Flight Path 2030 is to encourage students to consider technology-related careers. The National Center for Women & Information Technology AiC opens pathways into technology careers, celebrating studentsโ technical aspirations and connecting them to a national network for success. All students interested in computing, engineering, or technology โ and who want to support peers facing gender-based barriers โ gain immediate access to resources, mentors, peers, scholarship opportunities, and awards.
The AiC Award application window is open now through Oct. 28. Check it out here,

- Congrats to Red Wing's MAKE48 team of Seth Ziemer, Tristan Wilczynska, Bentley Ricks and Gavin Plath! They did an amazing job at the 48 hour competition filmed earlier this year that just recently aired on YouTube (see below). They will now travel to Nationals in a few months!
Watch the full episodes of the Fastenal Safety Challenge, a revolutionary innovation competition where inventors and makers come together to create innovative solutions to save lives. This MAKE48 invention competition challenged participants to use design thinking and problem-solving skills to develop groundbreaking prototypes for the manufacturing floor. From concept to reality, see how these innovators use hands-on learning in a prototyping lab at Minnesota State College Southeast to bring their ideas to life. It was the ultimate test of creativity, ingenuity, and product development, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the pursuit of safety and innovation.

RWHS Student Council Hosts Leadership Event For Area Schools
Red Wing High School Student Council has two elected officers on the Southeast Division (SED) of Student Councils, which means we had the honor of hosting the SED Fall Conference. Juniors Beatrix Lahammer and Piper Ryan, who serve as the Vice President and Secretary, did an outstanding job of organizing this large event.
The event was held on October 24th, and there were 280 people who attended from fourteen different schools. The purpose of the event is to provide a space for student leaders to network and share ideas that they can bring back to their communities and schools.
At this event, the theme was Disney, so there were creative costumes, decorations, and Disney music. While students definitely had fun at this event with the theme and by participating in interactive activities, they also received a meaningful and relevant message about leadership from Charley Nelson. Charley is currently a swim and dive coach for RWHS. Formerly, he taught and coached here in Red Wing, and he worked for the Jostens Renaissance Program, organizing leadership programs in schools at the national level.
In addition to learning about characteristics of effective leaders, students participated in "Penny Wars" to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. They raised $618, and some of the student leaders will visit the patients there and deliver the donation next week. Learning about leadership, networking with other student leaders, demonstrating their philanthropic spirit, and participating in interactive activities was the perfect combination for a very successful event; it was made even better thanks to the delicious donuts provided by Hanisch and pizza provided by Liberty's and Godfather's. Students left the event inspired with great ideas and a satisfied appetite!

RWHS to lead veterans observance
Col. Steve Babcock will give the keynote address for the 2025 Community Veterans Day Commemoration on Friday, Nov. 7. The public event will begin at 10 a.m. in the Red Wing High School gymnasium.
Colonel Babcock enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard in 2000, gaining his commission as a signal officer through ROTC at Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2004. He has been on three deployments, four state emergency activations, and two overseas training events demonstrating a steadfast commitment to both state and national service.
โThis annual event reminds our students to be grateful for the sacrifices made on their behalf,โ Superintendent Bob Jaszczak said. โWe encourage anyone in the community to join us in honoring the areaโs veterans and active duty personnel.โ
โThis invitation is both humbling and meaningful,โ Colonel Babcock said. โI look forward to sharing lessons from my years of service and helping our students see that leadership and sacrifice are timeless values. Connecting our youth with the veterans in our community ensures that legacy continues.โ
He currently serves as the Army G6 for Minnesota Joint Forces HQ where he provides strategic leadership for the state military's IT, communication, and cyber capabilities. In his civilian capacity, he holds the position of director of network engineering at Optum, a division of UnitedHealth Group, where he focuses on the integration of acquired organizations.
Residents of Red Wing since 2007, he and Erkia, his wife of 20 years, have three children. He enjoys volunteering with Scouting America and attending his childrenโs sporting events. In addition, he serves on the American Legion Post 54 Executive Board in town, and he has several hobbies he tries to fit in when time allows.
The Veterans Day Commemoration is held the Friday before Veterans Day, which is always Nov. 11 โ a Tuesday this year. There will be a military color guard. Red Wing High School Concert Band, Ovation, and Tinta Wita Singers will provide music and song.
All are welcome to attend. Please enter at the District Office, Door No. 36. Veterans and guests will be escorted to seating on the gymnasium floor. There is an elevator available.
The event is sponsored by Red Wing Public Schools, Minnesota State College Southeast, Red Wing American Legion Post 54 and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon of Hiawatha Valley.
