Some thoughts for the starting school year

February 4 - 10, 2024
A few words from Mr. Townsend...
National School Counseling Week begins on Monday. Along with assistant principals, school counselors are one of the most misunderstood roles in a school. Many of us have had contact and interactions with school counselors, but defining their specific role in a school can be a challenge. For the past decade, we have seen the expectations for this position shift.
One could argue that the school counselor's focus is post-secondary opportunities, and counselors should only focus on seniors. However, our students have a wide variety of opportunities after graduating from JHS. Additionally, our underclassmen prepare for college, military, and the workforce well before their senior year with AP classes, New Horizons, internships, and other experiences.
Even before the pandemic, our school counselors worked with students individually and in small groups to provide behavior and organizational supports to our students. School counselors also help bridge the gap between mental health services, families, and our school.
While I can download the specific job description for school counselors, I am hard-pressed to tell you what they do other than to acknowledge I appreciate that they are on the job at JHS. Please take few moments to leave an appreciative message for our counseling team in this newsletter.
Let's go to work,
H.E. Townsend, IV
Principal

The Weekly Wrap-Up
The Weekly Wrap-Up allows our teachers and staff to incorporate remediation, coursework completion, and small group instruction into the instructional week. Every Thursday and Friday, all classes will reserve the final 20 minutes of class for the above written activities. As we move closer to the interim for Marking Period 1, students may find they need additional support and time to complete assessment. The Weekly Wrap-Up will give students this time. Because we reserve this time every Thursday and Friday, every student will this opportunity in every class once a week.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the WEEKLY WRAP UP:
- Provide students with an opportunity to make up work that was missed.
- Provide an opportunity for students to review their CANVAS and VUE pages for missing work and organize themselves for the coming week.
- Allow teachers an opportunity to provide small group instruction/remediation within their classes.
EXPECTATIONS
Students are to stay in their assigned blocks. There will be no passes to other classes during the WEEKLY WRAP UP.
Students are to be working on their content. This is NOT free time. Teachers are to continue their skill and content instruction. However, the instruction will be:
1. Review
2. Small group instruction
3. Organization time for students to review their grades or missing assignments
WJCC Policies of Note
Cellular Device Policy
As we begin the new school year, all families are reminded of our personal electronic device policy:
Students in Grades 9-12 may use their personal devices during passing periods and/or their lunch period. For safety purposes and to ensure the ability to hear necessary communication and direction, students may only use headphones/earbuds on or in one ear. Students shall not access personal devices during instructional time.
Personal electronic devices include, but are not limited to, cell phones, earbuds/headphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Division-issued 1:1 devices shall be used at the teacher’s discretion during instructional time. Personal headphones or earbuds may be used under staff direction to support classroom instruction.
We thank you in advance for your partnership. It is our expectation that students and staff value and prioritize instructional time. This includes the elimination distractions, including personal electronic devices. Our commitment to reinforcing expectations at home and at school will promote success and enhance academic engagement for students. Our Code of Conduct is a valuable reference. We appreciate families taking time to review reminders about electronic devices and all expectations outlined within it.
Attendance Policy
The Williamsburg-James City County School Division is committed to preparing students to progress academically, to achieve success and to accept responsibility for themselves. As a part of this commitment, the school division has established attendance performance guidelines for all students in grades K-12.
A few items of note:
1. There is a waiver process to support families. Illnesses and medical emergencies should not negatively impact a student's grade. However, our school does need to document the steps we take to work with our families; the waiver process help us do this with our families.
2. Field trips, VHSL activities, and other WJCC affiliated events do not count against a student's excused or unexcused absence totals.
3. When in doubt about a student's absence or status, please give JHS a call or send an email to your administrator. With families, we will be able to find a way forward.
