Message from the School Counselor, Mrs. Kurth-Ford Message from the School Counselor, Mrs. Kurth-Ford

In October I will be providing lessons in grades Kindergarten through 5.

Kindergarten

Although many of our kindergartners already know me, this month’s lesson teaches them about my role as the school counselor. They learn all the ways a school counselor can support their learning and manage their feelings. They also learned how to request an appointment with me.

1st Grade

First grade started a unit on the Zones of Regulation. Using the zones, I teach students how to identify and regulate their emotions. Together we read the book “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain. Using the feelings in the book students learned how to apply them to the four zones (blue, green, yellow, and red). Students also learned to identify how their body feels and level of control in each of the zones.

2nd Grade

First grade started a unit on the Zones of Regulation. Using the zones, I teach students how to identify and regulate their emotions. Together we read the book “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain. Using the feelings in the book students learned how to apply them to the four zones (blue, green, yellow, and red). Students also learned to identify how their body feels and level of control in each of the zones.

3rd Grade

We are continuing our unit on following directions. This month students work with a partner to practice following and giving direction. Working with a partner, students were able to see the impact following directions have on completing a coloring sheet.

4th Grade

We are continuing our unit on Personal Responsibility. Working in small groups, students will sort a variety of tasks based who they believe is responsible (them, their grown-ups, or teachers). They will then show understanding by identifying 1 task they can begin taking responsibility for.

5th Grade

Students will learn how and why our bodies react the way they do to stressors. Students will then learn how to apply strategies that can help them regulate their responses.

Student appointments

There are several ways a student (or their grownups) can request an appointment. The first is to ask a teacher to contact me for an appointment. The second way is to complete an appointment request note found on the bulletin board outside of my office. Completed forms are placed into a folder also on the bulletin board. Finally, parents / guardians can contact me to request an appointment with their child. I can be reached by calling the front office (410-386-1550) or emailing me directly (StacyKurthFord@carrollK12.org) In case of an emergency, the office should be notified, and they will locate me immediately.

We will again be honoring the family members of our students and staff that have served in the armed forces. We will be continuing our tradition of creating a slide show highlighting our community’s veterans. The slide show will be shown at our PBIS assembly on November 10. All teachers will have access to the slide show to share again with classes on November 11. If you would like to have yourself or a family member included in our slide show please provide us with the following information by Wednesday, November 4.

· A picture of the veteran. Please send it electronically as we cannot guarantee the return of photographs.

· The name and rank of the veteran.

· The branch of the armed services in which they served.

· The name(s) and relationship of the Ebb Valley student / staff connected to the veteran.

· Any information such as honors, awards, years served, etc. that you would like highlighted.

All information should be emailed to the school counselor, Mrs. Kurth-Ford (stacykurthford@carrollk12.org).

Home Access Center Home Access Center

Home Access Center (HAC) is the CCPS parent/student portal that allows you/your child to access a variety of information.

  • You can view attendance, student’s e-mail/password, classes, grades, service-learning, and emergency contact information.
  • You can register to receive an email anytime your child is absent and receive a weekly email with your child’s classwork and grades.

If you have not yet registered, we encourage you to do so by clicking on this link: HAC Login

  • Click the “Request Password” link and follow the directions on-screen.
  • If you forgot your password, click the “Forgot Password” link and follow the steps.
  • Home Access Center is also available as a mobile app for both Apple and Android devices - search keyword: eSchoolPLUS Family. The app will not replace Home Access Center; it is an additional way to access your child’s information.

To receive HAC attendance and gradebook alerts

  • Go to Home Access Center – if you have more than one student in CCPS, then you will be prompted to select a student.
  • After you select the student, let the cursor hover over your name on the top right corner of the screen.
  • Click on My Alerts. Check the box for “Classwork Alerts” - you will receive these alerts every Thursday.
  • You can also check the box for “Receive Attendance Alerts” - those emails are sent daily if your child is marked tardy, absent, or has an early dismissal.
  • Parents who subscribed to receive these alerts last year will need to subscribe again this year. You will need to follow these steps for each child.
