MCAVINNUE'S PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello McAvinnue Community!
I hope that everyone is relaxing this weekend...and enjoying the warmer weather we are having! This is the second weekend in a row that the tempertures feel more like Summer than the Fall!
Thank you to everyone that came out to McAvinnue's "Back To School Bash" on Wednesday, October 1st! It was a super fun evening of fun, game play, and delicious food and treats! We have another event occuring at the end of October. Please refer to the section below for more details!
The recent temperatures have been mild allowing for our students to enjoy some outdoor recess and Physical Education time. However, I have reminded the students to dress in layers each day with a light jacket or sweatshirt. This will ensure they are fully prepared to adjust with the changing temperatures. Please make sure that your child is fully prepared to be as comfortable as possible during the school day.
It is going to be a busy week at McAvinnue! We will have our first "Lion's Pride Core Value All School Celebration on Monday...we will have our first "official" all school evacuation practice with the Lowell Fire Department any day now, and a few moe field trips for Grades 1 and 4!

Make that you are making arrangements to be available for your child on this day.
We will send home the first progress report for your child this week on Friday, October 17th for our Kindergarten - Grade 4 students. As you know, the goal of this progress report is to briefly review how things are going for your students after the first few months of school. Please keep in mind that we will be hosting Parent /Teacher Conferences in December which will be an opportunity to formally review how your child is progressing in each content area.
Please note that there is some information for some upcoming events at McAvinnue such as Indigenous Peoples Day (formally known as Columbus Day), McAvinnue's Picture Day, and McAvinnue's "Spooky Fall Fun" Family Celebrations! Mark your calendars for these events!

Indigenous Peoples Day: Monday, October 13th
Mark your calendars and make arrangements to be avaialble for your child...There will be no school on Monday, October 13th due to Indigenous Peoples Day.
The first seed of Indigenous Peoples’ Day was planted at a U.N. international conference on discrimination in 1977. The first state to recognize the day was South Dakota in 1989. Berkeley, California, and Santa Cruz followed suit.
Although the day was still considered Columbus Day up to 1937, many people began calling it Indigenous Peoples’ Day to celebrate the rich culture and the lives of the Native American people.
For the Native Americans, Columbus Day was always hurtful as it glorified the violent past constituting 500 years of colonial torture and oppression by European explorers like Columbus and those who settled in America. Indigenous Peoples’ Day draws attention to the pain, trauma, and broken promises that were erased by the celebration of Columbus Day. Before his arrival, the indigenous folk were successful self-sufficient communities that sustained life for thousands of years.
Year by year, the movement to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day spreads to more and more states, towns, and cities across the United States of America.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrates, recognizes, and honors the beautiful traditions and cultures of the Indigenous People, not just in America, but around the world. Their way of life and culture carries wisdom and valuable insights into how we can live life more sustainably.
Today, 14 U.S. states celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and not Columbus Day, as well as the District of Columbia. More than 130 cities including Arlington, Amherst, Cambridge, Brookline, Marblehead, Great Barrington, Northampton, Provincetown, Somerville, and Salem also celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
