Principal's Corner ~ Gratitude
Hello BFPP Families,
When I asked Siri for a definition of gratitude she shared: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.
At this time of year I like to consider what I am grateful for and this definition brings some additional considerations. I have an image of the quality of being thankful. It is full of love and grace for self and others. It is giving and receiving. It is humble, compassionate, and open.
Then there is a call to do something. It is with “readiness to show appreciation” that we are moved to actively demonstrate that which we are thankful for; to do something to share our gratitude. There are so many small and bigger ways to show appreciation. Whether a heartfelt thank you, a hug, a note, a nod, a smile, a handshake, or an act in return. To follow with to return kindness. We could all use a little return to kindness don’t you think.
At my Thanksgiving table (which will be a lot smaller this year), I will share my thankfuls, you among them. With hope that we can share the quality of being thankful, with a readiness to show appreciation for and to return KINDNESS.
Thank you BFPP Families!
With love and hugs from afar, k

Literacy Routines + Inquiry Cycles = Learning Independence
Join teacher and homeschooler Erin McCarthy on November 18th @ 10:00-11:30am
This workshop will push deeper into our homeschooling practices by reminding families of the Daily 5 to promote literacy learning and introducing them to Inquiry Cycles to foster learner motivation. This workshop is for all families who are curious about using routine literacy practices (and not a specific curriculum) to delve deeply into student-led learning. It will emphasize learning routines for mid-level learners (grades 4-8+) and will include:
- A review of the Daily 5 of literacy learning: read to self, read to others, listen to reading, word work, and journal writing
- A brief introduction to different types of Inquiry Cycles
- A quick tool for integrating Inquiry Cycles at home
- Q & A about best practices in homeschool literacy learning
Enrollment will be limited to foster engagement and interaction, so please RSVP Erin at erin.mccarthy@bellinghamschools.org by 3pm Tuesday (Nov. 17th) for your spot in this learning lab.
The Doodler ~ First Edition
Have you had a chance to read this year's first edition of our school newspaper?
This year your hardworking BFPP newspaper staff members are:
Parker Kiniry, Aiden Shupack, Ian Rule, Kaila Boag (and editor Kylee Boag who is a 9th grader this year but she returned just to help us out!), Maia Caprice, Ryla Sabado, Penelope Longman, Clara Jackson, Ella Brannan and Bianca Mariotti.
Keep an eye out for our Doodler Dudette hidden throughout the pages!
Since we can’t wander the halls watching each of you smile with a paper in your hand, please reach out and tell our reporters you appreciate their work and let them know what you’d like them to report on next.
Happy Reading,
Erica Wolverton
Welcome Baby Santhi!

Whatcom Virtual Farm Circle
Whatcom Family Farmers has launched the Virtual Farm Circle, transforming a traditionally in-person event to an online activity for this fall in response to pandemic restrictions.
Created with third graders in mind, the online activity uses a set of three illustrated maps, showing a dairy farm, raspberry farm and seed potato farm, to direct students to a series of short videos highlighting various aspects of local agriculture. Accompanying worksheets guide the students through the activities.
