Items That Need Your Attention Items That Need Your Attention

IMPORTANT!!!!! Car Line Request

Please do not begin the car line in the staff parking lot before 8:15 each day. It makes it very difficult for staff to get in and park as their work day begins at 8:15. We will begin asking you to move if staff parking is blocked.

IMPORTANT!!!!! Bus Change Request Form

Families often call the school requesting to change their address or their child's AM or PM bus stop. Effective immediately, there is a request form on the Sheldon website for this purpose. Please complete the form if you are needing to make a change to your address for bussing purposes. Requests are submitted to the transportation office every Thursday morning and most changes take effect the following Monday. Not all requests will be honored, based on transportation policy. To find the form, go to Sheldon's website and scroll just past the top picture to the Quick Links. You will find one that says "Sheldon Bus Transportation Request Form". School staff will call to confirm each request.

COVID Tests for Families

If your family needs COVID tests for your home, please email or call the school nurse, Ms. Andrea. aferrell1@tps501.org or 785-438-4533.

Transportation Changes Coming in January

As a courtesy, if a family has not been at the bus stop to pick up their child when the bus arrives, we have been calling the family to let them know the bus is there and to get to the stop within 1 minute. Beginning in January, we will no longer be making these calls. It is expected that families be at the stop at least 10 minutes before their scheduled time. It is also highly encouraged that families use the Here Comes the Bus app to track the bus in real time. When we return from Winter Break, as long as the bus is within 10 minutes of the scheduled bus stop time, the bus will wait the required 1 minute for an approved pick-up adult to pick up the child. After that 1 minute, the bus will continue on its route and the child will be returned to school when the route is finished. Families will need to come to the school and sign their child out in the main entryway. When the bus arrives, the child will be brought to the main entryway to be released to an approved pick-up person.

Please note: You may NOT follow the bus to retrieve your child at a stop other than the one assigned to them.

Policy & Procedure Review Policy & Procedure Review

Selection Process

Each week the Sheldon staff reviews one of our Head Start Policies & Procedures and felt it was important that families stay up to date on these as well. This quarter our focus is on Family Service & Parent Involvement. If you ever have any questions regarding our policies and procedures, please reach out!

Selection Process

POLICY:

The program has a formal process for establishing selection criteria and for selecting children and families that considers all eligible applicants for Head Start services. This policy relates to Head Start Performance Standards 45 CFR Part 1302.14

PROCEDURE:

1. Use the information from the annual Community Assessment to determine appropriate eligibility criteria for enrollment into Head Start. This information will be discussed with all parties involved including staff, parents, governing body members, and policy groups. The eligibility criteria will be approved by the Governing Board, Policy Council and the Policy Committees of each delegate program on an annual basis.

2. At least 10% of the total number of enrollment opportunities during an enrollment year are made available to children with disabilities.

3. A maximum of 10% of enrolled children may be from over-income families who meet the criteria and who could benefit from Head Start services. Over-income children are only enrolled in the absence of enough under-income children to fill the program slots.

4. Parents and staff review and update the program’s selection process and criteria annually to make sure enrollment opportunities continue to be based on community needs.

5. The program develops at the beginning of each enrollment year, and maintains during the year, a waiting list that ranks children according to the selection criteria to assure that eligible children enter the program as vacancies occur. Each enrollment slot is filled as soon as a vacancy occurs and not to exceed 30 days.

Home Depot Workshops

Each month, Home Depot offers a fun workshop for kids! Show up toward the beginning of the session to ensure there are enough materials for your child. Children must be present to receive a kit. They get to keep their project, receive a free certificate of achievement, a workshop apron, and a commemorative pin (while supplies last). Can't make it to Home Depot for the kids' workshop? Why not bring the party home! Here are just a few of the ready to assemble kits you can buy and build at home. Homedepot.com also offers great kids' activities, videos, and how-to's!

Workshops take place the first Saturday of each month from 9:00-12:00.

Kansas Homeowner Assistance Fund

The Kansas Homeowner Assistance Fund (KHAF), a federally funded, temporary emergency program to support homeowners experiencing hardship during the Covid pandemic, has dispersed 80 percent of program funds. Since the program launched in April 2022, KHAF has provided $37,460,240 to 3,377 households. With 20 percent of funds still available, homeowners in need of assistance are encouraged to apply now while funding remains.

“I was stressed and overwhelmed when I got behind on my mortgage payments,” said one KHAF applicant. “With so much going on in my life, I was hesitant to get started applying for KHAF assistance. However, once I sat down and focused, I learned that the application process was much easier than I thought. My advice to others is to apply now; don’t wait. You will be surprised by the simple process; if you need help, you can always call a KHAF customer service representative.”

KHAF was established with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to help qualifying Kansas homeowners get current on their mortgage payments and avoid foreclosure. Eligible homeowners at least 30 days past-due on mortgage and/or property taxes can receive payment assistance for mortgages, utility bills, property taxes, and other charges associated with delinquency.

For more information and to apply, visit the Kansas Homeowner Assistance Fund (KHAF) webpage. For questions, contact KHAF customer service at 855-307-5423.
