Book Character Parade

We're excited to share that we are bringing back a beloved F.Ave tradition! In honor of Georgia Reads, our school will host a Favorite Book and Character Parade on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at 8:30. Students are invited to dress up as their favorite book character and join in the fun. Parents, the route will begin in front of the school, down Fifth Avenue, and we'll proceed towards Gordon Avenue and circle the block until we get back to campus. We ask that all parents who are in attendance line the streets of Fifth Avenue, Fourth Avenue, and Oakview Road.

Let's come together to celebrate the joy of reading!

One Flock, One Flight-F.Ave Falcons Unite!!!

Favorite Book & Character Parade Details

In honor of Georgia Reads on September 22, 2025, FAVE is hosting a “Favorite Book and Character Parade" on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at 8:30. Students are invited to dress up as their favorite book character and/or bring in a copy of their favorite book. All students will join in the celebration. Whether costumed or not, we will showcase how literary characters teach us about experiences, perspectives, and sometimes, ourselves. Additionally, during our morning meetings, we will engage in meaningful conversations about the many characters highlighted during our celebration.

Parade Route

The Favorite Book and Character Parade will start at 8:30 a.m. on October 8th. The route will begin at the front door, turn right down 5th Ave, turn right on Gordon, turn right on Oakview, and turn right on 5th. Parents are invited to cheer for us along the parade route.

Costume Reminders

We are excited to see how students represent their favorite characters. Please note that students may not wear masks. Weapon props of any kind are not permitted. All other props will be allowed during the parade and stored in student lockers afterward. If possible, bring a copy of the book that showcases the chosen character.

We are looking forward to celebrating the myriad of characters across all the books our students here at FAVE love to read!

F.Ave will host a Book Character Parade on October 8, 2025. Students may dress up as their favorite book character. More information to come.

Speaker Series

The Decatur Parents Network and the Decatur Education Foundation are collaborating this year on the Speaker Series. This event will take place on October 15 at DHS Learning Commons 6:30 to 8:00. This event is for adults only. Due to parent requests and community feedback, we are hosting a speaker series for Decatur parents to have a community conversation on youth gatherings, alcohol, and other drug misuse. Parents and caregivers will hear from local experts and explore how to keep youth safe, set clear boundaries, and understand responsibilities when gatherings happen in private spaces. As this is Red Ribbon month and Halloween is coming, this topic is particularly timely!

Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary will administer the BASC-3 BESS to grades 3, 4, and 5, beginning October 7.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In our continuing efforts to support the well-being of all students, City Schools of Decatur (CSD) will administer a universal screener of social, emotional, and behavioral health. In the 2023-2024 school year, CSD adopted the Behavior Assessment for Children, 3rd edition, Behavior and Emotional Screening System (BASC-3 BESS) as the universal screener for behavior.

For the 2025-26 school year, students in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 will take the student self-report of the screener at their school during the fall and spring administration dates. The fall administration window of the BASC-3 BESS will open on October 6 and close on October 31. The spring administration begins on March 2 and runs through March 27.

Please access the Universal Social Emotional Behavior Screener Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the CSD website to learn more.

If you have any questions please contact your child's school counselor:

Hispanic Heritage Tasting-Celebremos El Mes de la Herencia Latina & Hispana¡Vamos a comer!

Celebremos El Mes de la Herencia Latina & Hispana¡Vamos a comer!

F.Ave continues our celebration of Latino and Hispanic Heritage with the Annual FAve Flavors. This event will be held Wednesday, October 8th, 2025. In honor of the many unique cultures and cuisines of Latin America and Spain, we would like to offer students a small taste of Latino & Spanish flavors. We are looking for support from F.Ave families to help make this event a big success. If you have culinary skills and an interest in sharing your favorite Latino and Spanish inspired recipes with our students - we would love for any family to participate! Feel free to pair up with a friend, too. We would recommend simple savory and sweet bites similar to dishes such as Dominican Dulce de Leche, Puerto Rican Plantains, Peruvian Bean and Cheese Pupusas, Venezuelan Corn Arepas, Mexican Churros or Conchas, Cuban Arroz con Frijoles, Uruguayan Chajá, Agua de Fresca. Please no chips and salsa or tacos. We are excited to have our families help build F.Ave's tradition of celebrating our students and community ALL YEAR LONG!

Support us by signing up for a dish or to volunteer during the event.

Sign up to host a Pride Porch at Oakhurst Porchfest!

We are hosting Pride Porches @ Porchfest! Every year the PTA/PTO DEI committees collaborate to decorate porches @ Oakhurst Porchfest to help celebrate Atlanta Pride (which is in October) and show support for our LGBTQIA+ families. If you live in the Porchfest area, we need your porch, lawn, or driveway!

The DEI Committees will create craft kits with decorations and will drop off before Porchfest. The host house just needs to set up their activities on a folding table in the lawn, driveway, or porch. If you have a Pride flag, fly it high!

If you would like to be a host house, please sign up below and provide your address (for kit and treat drop off and as a reference for Pride @ Porchfest maps). We also need volunteers to help assemble the kits on Sunday, October 5 @ 1pm. Location TBD depending on weather.
