Greetings Gearity Families:

Thank you to all the families that were able to attend the Math and Literacy Night. I will continue to provide everyone with a weekly summary of your student's learning focus in math and reading. The at home learning strategies are recommendations for how you can assist with reinforcing their learning in real world context. Student achievement is strengthened with a strong home school partnership so thank you for being partners in your child's learning.

We will start our mid-year norm referenced assessments next month and I want to stress that these assessments are not for a grade. The assessments measure students' proficiency on standards taught during the first half of the school year. They provide valuable insight into student learning and readiness while guiding instructional planning during the 2nd half of the school year. Please talk to your students about giving their best during these important assessments so we can get an accurate understanding who would benefit from additional supports. The assessments by grade level are:

Kindergarten - MAP for math in December and Acadience for reading in January

1st Grade - MAP for math in December and Acadience for reading in January

2nd Grade - MAP for math in December and Acadience for reading in January

3rd Grade - MAP for ELA and Math in December and Acadience for reading in January

4th Grade - MAP for ELA, Math and Science in December.

5th Grade - MAP for ELA, Math and Science in December.

3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will take end of quarter Interims in January to measure mastery of quarter 2 content in reading, math and science.

Gearity Earns PBIS Silver Award from the State: Our staff was notified this past week that we earned the Silver level recognition for PBIS implementation from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Development. The recognition certifies that we have implemented a strong Tier II support program that helps students learn expected behaviors and minimize removal from instruction. A school can not be recognized for the Silver level recognition without first earning Bronze recognition. We will be working hard this year to qualify for Gold certification which is the highest level of implementation of the PBIS framework.

Peek at the week!

Kindergarten:

Reading - Students are listening to stories and naming who the story is about, where it happens, and what important events take place.

Math - Students practice making and solving small addition and subtraction problems using objects, pictures, or fingers.

Parent tips for at home support: Ask your child to tell you the characters, setting, and what happened after reading a bedtime story. Play “math talk” during routines — count steps, compare groups, or talk about adding items to a basket.

Grade 1

Reading - Students are practicing asking questions, finding important details, and identifying the main idea in nonfiction reading.

Math - Students solve addition and subtraction problems within 20, work with fact families, and explain their math thinking.

Parent tips for at home support: After reading, ask: “What is this mostly about?” and “What details tell you more?” Create simple story problems: “You have 7 blocks, you lose 2. How many left?”

Grade 2

Reading - Students are practicing how to retell stories, identify the central message, and understand how words and phrases shape meaning in poetry.

Math - Students use number lines, base-ten blocks, and expanded form to build strong reasoning skills.

Parent tips for at home support: Read short poems together and talk about rhyming words or feelings. Use objects at home to build two-digit numbers and practice adding/subtracting.

Grade 3

Reading - Students are practicing how to explain how parts of a story (chapters, scenes, or dialogue) contribute to the overall story structure.

Math - Students are practicing multiplication and division within 100.

Parent tips for at home support: Discuss unfamiliar words while reading and ask your child to explain them in their own words. Use real-life objects to practice multiplication, division, or area concepts (e.g., tiles, grids, or measuring spaces).

Grade 4

Reading - Students are practicing how to Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text and determine main ideas and key details.

Math - Students are practicing solving word problems using the four operations.

Parent tips for at home support: Ask your child questions about main ideas and details after reading. Encourage solving word problems aloud to explain their reasoning.

Grade 5

Reading - Students are practicing how to describe how characters respond to challenges or events using text evidence.

Math - Students are practicing adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators as well as multiplying fractions and mixed numbers.

Parent tips for at home support: Discuss story themes and character decisions with your child while asking them to find evidence in the text to support their answers. Use visual fraction models to help with adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions.

PTA Needs You: Our next PTA meeting will be December 10th @ 6:30. I will share the Google meeting link when we return from Thanksgiving Break!
