Education Foundation Annual Auction
The Education Foundation, established in 1996, is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for students within the Berea City School District (BCSD). Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over one million dollars in scholarships, student grants, and staff grants.
The Foundation's support for BCSD encompasses several key initiatives:
Enrichment Grants: These grants fund innovative educational projects proposed by teachers, staff, and students, fostering creativity and enriching the learning experience.
Payroll Deduction Grants: Financed through voluntary payroll deductions from district employees, these grants support various educational programs and initiatives within the schools.
Beginning Teacher Grants: Aimed at supporting new educators, these grants provide resources to help them establish effective and dynamic classroom environments.
Scholarships: The Foundation offers scholarships to graduating seniors, assisting them in pursuing higher education and alleviating financial burdens associated with college expenses.
Through these programs, The Education Foundation plays a vital role in promoting academic excellence and supporting the professional growth of educators within the Berea City School District.
The Education Foundation for the Berea City School District will host its Annual Auction virtually this year from Thursday, March 6, to Sunday, March 9. Since 1996, the Foundation has served students in Middleburg Heights, Brook Park, and Berea.
Proceeds from the Annual Auction will help the Foundation continue providing unique classroom opportunities that would not otherwise be possible for students, manage scholarship and grant funds responsibly, and support the TLC Rooms at Berea-Midpark High School and Berea-Midpark Middle School.
Blankets of Love: Titans Leading with Empathy
Thanks to a grant from the Education Foundation, students at Grindstone Elementary demonstrated leadership and empathy through the Blankets of Love project. They created fleece tie blankets for BCSD students in need and for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace bedding drive, helping children in our community stay warm and comfortable.
Giving a blanket is more than just providing warmth. It is a way to show care, kindness, and support, making sure every recipient feels valued. Through this project, students learned the power of giving back and saw firsthand how their actions can positively impact others.
Thank you to Mrs. Tracy Silvestro and Mrs. Jenny Csiszar for leading this meaningful initiative and to our students for using their time and talents to make a difference.
BMHS Students Celebrate Leadership and Legacy at Cafe Harambee
Cafe Harambee is an annual event that has been celebrated at Berea-Midpark High School for approximately 15 years. The word "Harambee" translates to "coming together," a theme reflected in both the diversity of participants and the shared experience.
This year’s event honored African American Olympians, highlighting their achievements and lasting impact. The BMHS Symphonic Choir opened the event with a beautiful performance, setting the tone for the celebration. The BMHS Step Team also took the stage with a dynamic and rhythmic routine, bringing energy and excitement to the program.
Students from LEAD, RYP, MSA, EL, and the varsity boys and girls basketball teams also took part, delivering meaningful tributes to the athletes who inspire them. The Step Team’s performance was a standout moment, reinforcing the spirit of unity and celebration that defines Cafe Harambee.

Portrait to Practice
The Portrait of a Titan is a collective vision that articulates aspirations for ALL of our students. The Portrait identifies six key competencies that every student in the Berea City School District should possess by the time they graduate. These competencies are nurtured at every grade level. They are adaptable, communicator, critical thinker, empathetic, innovative, and leader. Our educators are inspiring students to cultivate these essential skills.
Mayor Marie Gallo Inspires ROX Students on Leadership and Confidence
Mayor Marie Gallo of Parma Heights shared valuable advice with the ROX (Ruling Our eXperiences) group at Berea-Midpark Middle School this afternoon. ROX is a program designed to empower young women by building confidence, leadership skills, and resilience. Speaking to these aspiring leaders, she reflected on her own journey to a leadership position and how they, too, can make an impact in their communities.
She emphasized the importance of being cautious about social media use. What is posted online can have long-term consequences, especially for those in public roles like herself as mayor. Instead of comparing themselves to unrealistic online personas, she encouraged the students to embrace their authentic selves.
Mayor Gallo also shared how she overcame shyness and introversion in middle school. She gradually built confidence through leadership roles, including serving on city council. She stressed the importance of maintaining positive relationships and creating a strong support system, particularly among women. She noted that she faced more resistance from female colleagues than male ones, reinforcing the need for women to uplift and support each other rather than create divisions.
She encouraged the students to get involved in their communities through volunteering and local government. Her story of breaking barriers, such as being the first woman to join her high school's boys golf team, highlighted the power of perseverance.
Her message to the ROX students reflected the Portrait of a Titan competency of leader. She demonstrated how leadership is not about being the loudest in the room but about having the confidence to take action, the resilience to overcome challenges, and the willingness to support and uplift others. She reminded them that leadership starts with believing in yourself and using your voice to create change.
With determination, a positive mindset, and a strong support system, the ROX students can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Her insights provided an inspiring roadmap for the young leaders in the room and reinforced the mission of ROX to help them develop the skills and confidence to lead.
BMHS Junior Class Executive Board Leads with Service and Gratitude
The BMHS Junior Class Executive Board demonstrated what it means to be a leader by giving back!
Students completed their latest service project by delivering donated beverages and donuts to the dedicated staff at UH Parma Medical Center, a small gesture of appreciation for their hard work.
A huge thank you to 7 Brew Middleburg Heights and manager Jim Fenning for their generous donation, as well as BMHS parent Denise Mutti, who not only coordinated the visit but also contributed donuts!
The UH staff was truly touched, and several professionals took the time to chat with students interested in health care careers. What an inspiring example of leadership and community service!

The Berea Board of Education holds regular community conversations to give the public access to board members outside of the formal public participation setting of a meeting. Residents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss any concerns they may have with two board members during a 30 minute time-slot set aside prior to each regular scheduled Board of Education meeting. The goal of this effort is to more effectively connect with the public and learn more about the community.
