Studying the orbit of the Earth around the Sun
zoom_out_map
It's been a month since our first day of school and our students and staff are fully into their learning routines. We have completed our Fall NWEA Math and Reading assessments and our Fall Fastbridge assessment which allows us to understand students oral reading fluency and components of how they decode words. With this information, teachers have begun differentiating their learning experiences as we target ways to help students cultivate meaning and grow as learners. It has been fun to walk into the classrooms and see our students working hard, asking each other questions so that they may build understanding of a concept or clarify the task they are trying to complete. Learning is often an experience flowing from easy responses through productive struggles with occasional blockages of misunderstanding. Our students and teachers will navigate this flow each day throughout the year.

At the end of August the Governor signed a new law clarifying use and application of E-Bikes, E-Scooters, and micro mobility transport. This law, which goes into effect on January 1, 2027, closes regulatory safety gaps, establishes rules for rapidly evolving transportation technology and equips communities with consistent rules to better protect riders, pedestrians and motorists. The new law will:

  • Require riders of e-bikes and e-motos capable of traveling over 28 mph to have a driver’s license, title, registration and insurance.
  • Prohibit e-bikes and micromobility devices such as e-scooters, electric skateboards and electric unicycles from operating on sidewalks and prohibit them from operating over 28 mph on roads, bike lanes and bike paths.
  • Establish minimum age requirements for riders of electric micromobility devices, including requiring riders of Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes (capable of traveling up to 20 mph) to be at least 15 years old and riders of Class 3 e-bikes and other covered electric micromobility devices to be at least 16 years old.

As such, none of our Winfield 34 students will be eligible to use these devices. Many of our students turn 14 their 8th grade year and we will be partnering with Winfield Police Department, Northwestern Medicine-Central DuPage Hospital, and St. John's the Baptist School to provide our 8th graders with an educational program around the law and safety for these devices in April. The safety of our students is of prime importance and this law works to provide safety for young drivers of these vehicles, pedestrians, and other motorists. Here is a graphic of the changes.
