The 3rd week of October is National School Safety Week.

CPCSC is hosting a presentation about school safety for parents and caregivers later this month. This 90-minute session will cover the district's steps to prevent and respond to safety issues, and how parents can help support our schools to be safe environments for students.

Students in grades 6+ are welcome to attend with their parents, but we ask that you consider whether the content and length of the presentation would be best for your elementary children.

  • Tuesday, October 22nd from 6-7:30 pm at Taft Middle School OR
  • Wednesday, October 30th from 6-7:30 pm at Col. Wheeler Middle School

To help our team prepare for this event, please sign up below to attend the presentation.

Free & Reduced Meals

The carry-over period for last year’s free and reduced meal status ended on September 25th. If you qualify for this benefit but haven't received a notice that your child is approved for free or reduced-price meals this year, you need to fill out an online application. You can complete it online at MyMealTime.com. If you’re unsure whether you need to fill out an application, please contact our Food Services team at 219-662-6480.

Middle School ELA Curriculum Field Test

We are excited to share that all of our ELA teachers and students at Taft and Colonel Wheeler Middle Schools will participate in a field test of one unit from Amplify ELA. Amplify ELA is a comprehensive English Language Arts curriculum that supports students in grades 6-8 to read and understand complex texts and encourages them to grapple with interesting ideas to find relevance for themselves. Students using Amplify ELA read text passages closely, interpret what they find, discuss their thinking with peers, and develop their ideas in writing.

Parents/Guardians are invited to attend an Amplify ELA Overview virtual session on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at 5 p.m. Please find the meeting link in your school's newsletter on October 3rd.

Each grade level will engage with one Amplify ELA unit. Here is an overview of each unit that will be field tested. Parents will also be able to see the curriculum in Buzz.

ILEARN Checkpoints Have Started

Last month our newsletter included information about the new ILEARN Checkpoints, which will affect grades 3-8. These tests will replace NWEA and provide valuable data to monitor students' learning and progress. You can find information on our website at this link.

Third graders at MacArthur Elementary helped SAVE FRED! as part of a STEM team-building activity. The partners had to find a way to work together to save Fred the Gummy Worm, and work to get him back to his life preserver (a gummy ring) by using only the four provided paperclips.

Last week we celebrated World School Milk Day! So what else would we do to celebrate but have our Director of Food Services dress as a carton of milk Here are a few fun facts in honor of this day: On average, it takes about two days for milk to travel from farm to school cafeteria. 94% of Indiana dairy farms are family owned. One serving of milk includes 8 grams of protein. Thanks to our cafeteria teams for providing important nutrition to power our students throughout their day

When this future Bulldog wanted to see the instruments during the homecoming game, our high school students from the Royal Regiment Marching Band encouraged his curiosity. Keep practicing, friend. You can perform at halftime in a few years!

CPHS Chemistry students in Mrs. Harnew's class are diving into real-world science, working with radioactive materials to identify penetrating power and test shielding materials. They graphed their results to explore the exponential nature of radioactive decay. This hands-on experiment is part of the Purdue Science Express program, which brings advanced scientific tools right to our classrooms. Through this partnership, our students get the chance to work with cutting-edge lab equipment—gear that many high school labs don’t have access to. We are proud to invest in STEM opportunities that spark curiosity and deepen understanding!
