Shaping Our Future, One Smile at a Time!
Amy Williams
It takes a big heart to help shape such little minds. On National Principals Day, we are celebrating a very special leader who makes McLaurin Elementary feel like a second home for our 3k-2nd grade students.
Mrs. Williams has spent 31 wonderful years in schools! She spent a long time as a teacher, 4 years as an Assistant Principal, and now 2 years as our Principal. Whether she is tying a shoelace in the hallway, helping a student with an assignment in her office, or giving a high-five at the car rider line, Mrs. Williams shows our youngest learners that school is a place to feel safe and be happy, and that they are "PAWSitively" the BEST! We love you, Mrs. Williams, and we appreciate ALL you do for us at McLaurin!
Here are a few SHOUT-OUTS for our favorite principal:
"Mrs. Williams is very nice and is the best principal ever. She gave us extra recess!" ~ Tatum, 2nd grade.
"I like that Mrs. Williams keeps us safe and what she does for us every day!" ~ Hayden, 1st grade
"Mrs. Williams is the best! She is nice and kind to everyone!"~ Leida, 2nd grade
"I love Mrs. Williams and being able to help her!"~ Cooper, 2nd grade
"I love her because I just do!" ~ Isabelle, 3K
ATTENTION PLEASE~CHANGE IN AFTERNOON CAR LINE
Beginning on Monday, May 4, there will be 2 lanes in the afternoon car line.
Please the see the visual above.
Lane 1 will be closest to the school and will be for 3K, 4K, and 5K Students and Siblings
Lane 2 will be for 1st and 2nd graders
We'd like to make the car line more efficient for all. Please be mindful of the car in front of you and ensure a child is in car in front of you. Adults will be placing students in cars. Cones will be in place to divide the lanes. You may still continue to pull off into the grass to put seatbelts on our precious one. There may be some kinks to work out the first few days, but we would love to make the car line run well for all.

Game Day
Playing board games as a family is a great way to incorporate play with meaning into your family. It's a great activity, but it's also helpful in building important skills such as sportsmanship, self-control, planning, following instructions, and more. If you don't have a family game night, start by scheduling one for at least once this upcoming month and work on it becoming more frequent.
Literacy Learning
Learning to Decode Words
Decoding involves teaching children to connect letters to their corresponding sounds—known as phonics—and blending those sounds together to read words (e.g., /c/-/a/-/t/ makes "cat"). By practicing this skill, children develop the ability to sound out new or unfamiliar words independently, reducing the need for guessing based on pictures and building confidence in their reading ability. While learning to decode requires time and patience, consistent, short practice sessions, such as playing with rhymes, breaking down words, or using decodable books at home, will help your child turn letter patterns into smooth, fluent reading.

Tardies and Afternoon Sign-outs
Getting to school on time is very important.
Instruction continues up until the end of the day, as well. Some students also have Related Arts up until 2:10 each day. Please schedule any afternoon appointments after 2:30pm.
Beginning August 11, we will begin accounting for tardies and early sign-outs. Tardies and early sign-outs play a part in missing instruction. Please pay careful attention to getting to school late and early sign-outs. Below is a letter about district policy on tardiness and absences. Excessive tardies and absences can lead to an attendance plan.
In addition, early sign-outs:
Interrupt the classroom environment for other students.
Cause students to miss reminders and assignments that help them be successful.
May lead to the creation of an attendance intervention plan if early dismissals become a regular occurrence (when a student is signed out 3 times/quarter, the fourth sign out will result in an official attendance plan).
F1S Elementary Attendance Policy
This attendance policy for Florence 1 Schools, effective for the 2025-2026 school year, outlines rules for elementary students (5K-5th grade). Key points include:
- Absences: Students are limited to ten absences with a doctor's excuse and ten absences of any other kind (including parent notes, suspensions, sign-outs, and unexcused absences). Exceeding these limits can result in loss of promotion. Written excuses are required for all absences and must be submitted within three days of the student's return to school.
- Part-Day Absences: Students are counted present if they are in school for at least four hours; otherwise, they are counted absent. Signing out before 11:50 a.m. or signing in after 10:10 a.m. results in an absence.
- Unexcused Absences: State law requires regular school attendance. Parents can face fines or jail time for violations of the Compulsory Attendance Law.
- Extended Illnesses: Homebound instruction is available for students with physician-certified illnesses, with applications due within ten days of the first absence.
- Appeals: Students not promoted due to absences may appeal at the end of the school year if absences are due to extreme hardship.
- Tardiness: School begins at McLaurin at 7:55 a.m., with students marked tardy if not seated by 8:00 a.m. Consequences reset each semester:
- 1st-4th tardy: Warning
- 5th tardy: Overnight suspension and parent conference
- 6th tardy: One day out-of-school suspension, or parent may attend school with the child.
- General: Students must provide valid written excuses for absences within three days, listing dates, reasons, phone number, and signature. False excuses will lead to disciplinary action. Failure to comply can result in referrals to the Truancy Intervention Panel, Family Court, or Department of Social Services (DSS).
Parents are required to sign an agreement acknowledging their understanding of the policy and consequences. Additional copies of the policy are available at the school office, Attendance Supervisor's office, and in student agendas.
Special Parking for Special Friends
Please respect and honor the reserved the two parking spaces near the flagpole and all the parking spaces along the side of the staff parking lot (parallel with the handicapped spots) for families of our Exceptional Ed students. Please do not park in those spots so parents can drop off kiddos with ease. Thanks for your help in helping us ensure safety for all of our students.

Bus Transportation Communication
The transportation department will be using Blackboard communication program as the primary mean of communicating late buses or bus issues.
Change in Transportation
Please make every effort to make arrangements for transportation before your child comes to school. Students should know how they are going to get home each day. We realize that emergencies do arise and changes sometimes need to be made. If it is necessary to make such changes, please call the school office before 1:00 p.m.
