We’re Off and Running! 🐎

What a great first week at HMS! There is nothing quite like filling the building again with familiar, smiling faces, busy hallways, and the energy of our Mustangs. This week was all about settling in: learning routines and procedures, reconnecting with friends and teachers, and beginning to build the classroom communities that will carry us through the year. We are officially off and running!

And, in true HMS fashion, we have another jam-packed newsletter for you! Thank you for taking the time to read through the updates, reminders, and happenings. We know there is a lot coming your way at the start of the year, and we appreciate you staying connected with us. Here’s to a fantastic first week and an even better year ahead!

Thank you for partnering with us,

Amy

A reminder from our previous newsletter:

As we get the year rolling, there are a few housekeeping items coming your way. Your child will be bringing home several forms and pieces of information that we ask families to review and, when needed, complete and return to school. Please keep an eye out for those backpack treasures. We all know the bottom of a backpack can become a mysterious place surprisingly quickly! Please return these items by Friday, September 11th.

Wearable technology, including smartwatches and similar devices, falls under the district’s expectations for personal electronic devices during the school day. If a wearable device becomes a distraction, is used for communication, or interferes with learning, the student will be asked to remove it and place it in their backpack for the remainder of the day. Our goal is simply to minimize distractions and keep students focused and engaged throughout the school day.

Arrival & Dismissal Arrival & Dismissal

As we settle into the rhythm of the new school year, we want to thank you for your patience and partnership. The first few days are always a learning curve for everyone, but please rest assured that our drop-off and pick-up process will become faster and smoother over the next several days as our students, families, and staff get fully adjusted to the routine.

We recently received some questions about Parent Pick-Up times for the two elementary schools. We completely understand the challenge for families that choose to pick-up at both schools. If you arrive after 3:30 PM, please know that your child will be brought to the main office for supervision, ensuring every student remains safe and cared for until you arrive.

To help us keep our dismissal line safe and efficient for everyone, we kindly ask for your support with the following:

  • Plan Ahead: Please make every effort to account for afternoon traffic or scheduling changes so you can arrive before dismissal ends.
  • Stay in Your Vehicle: Remaining in your car keeps our dismissal line moving safely and smoothly, unless you have a younger child who needs assistance with buckling/unbuckling.
  • Foster Independence: For our older students, encouraging them to spot your car, carry their own backpack, and buckle themselves goes a long way in building their confidence and speeding up the line!

We know how busy family schedules can be, and we truly appreciate your ongoing cooperation and efforts to keep our school community safe. Thank you for your continued support!

The Anxious Generation

Join Assistant Principal Bill Hinkle and read "The Anxious Generation." The book, by Jonathan Haidt, illustrates the shift from a "play-based childhood" to a "phone-based childhood" in the early 2010s, which caused a severe epidemic of teen mental illness.

Details are attached.

Important Highlights & Documents Important Highlights & Documents

Be on the lookout for paperwork coming home!

  • SCHOOL HOURS for children in grades 3-5 is from 9:00 AM to 3:15 PM. Dismissal is a lengthy process. We begin releasing students at 3:15. Students are expected to be in their classrooms by 9:00AM and to remain in school until dismissal time. Teachers are on duty beginning at 8:40 AM each morning. Children should not be dropped off in the school building, or on the school grounds before 8:40 am. The school district accepts no responsibility for the safety of your child before that time. The gate to the parent-drop-off loop closes at 9:00 am. Students are considered tardy if they arrive after 9:00 am. They need to be escorted to the main office by a parent to be checked in by office staff.

  • HOT LUNCH & BREAKFAST PROGRAM: Please read the information attached to the Free/Reduced Lunch Application Form. The monthly lunch menu is available online on our school’s website. If you previously applied for free and reduced lunch, you will need to reapply (only one application per family).

  • PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK: The Parent/Student Handbook can be found on our school website. Please read this carefully as it contains information on school procedures and rules, bus regulations, and other pertinent and important information. Please let us know if you do not have internet access and need a paper copy. Please return the signature page that was sent home once you have reviewed the handbook.

  • SCHOOL CANCELLATION/DELAYS: Information on school cancellation announcements are included in the Parent/Student Handbook which can be accessed on our school’s website: https://memorial.sau15.net . You will also receive voice, email and/or text alerts through the Bright Arrow notification system.

  • LOST & FOUND: Please mark your child’s name in jackets, sweaters, hats, boots, etc. If your child has lost any possessions, have him/her check the “Lost & Found” section of the main common area near the cafe. Any lunch money sent to school with your child should be in an envelope with the child’s name, homeroom, and quantity on it.

  • CELL PHONES/COMMUNICATION DEVICES: New Hampshire State Law HB2 and Hooksett School District Policy JICJ prohibits unauthorized student use of personal communication devices (i.e. cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, laptops, and any non-district provided internet or cellular-capable device) throughout the school day, which is considered “bell-to-bell”. Students are encouraged to leave their personal devices at home, however, if a student brings a personal device to school, the device must be turned off and stored in a location designated by the school. The District will not be responsible for loss, damage, or theft of any personal communication device brought to the school. Please refer to the Parent-Student Handbook for additional information including the discipline progression.
