2023-2024 Staff Milestones
Celebrating the Growth of the BMMS Garden Club
The Berea-Midpark Middle School's Courtyard and Children’s Garden opening was a wonderful celebration of the Garden Club's first full year.
The journey began with just three students and a small group of dedicated teachers and staff planting the first plants last August. Today, the Garden Club has blossomed into a group of 25 students!
Throughout the year, the BMMS Garden Club has completed numerous projects, including:
- Constructing four Adirondack chairs
- Building six modular sectional seats
- Maintaining the gardens
- Installing a Koi Pond
- Adding a Directional Sign
A special highlight of the garden are the murals in the courtyard. This past November, Mrs. McCulley-Frankenfield's eighth grade advanced art students took on the challenge of designing and painting these murals. After six months of dedication, their incredible artwork now decorates the garden. A heartfelt thank you to the Brook Park American Legion Post 610 for their generous $650 donation for the mural supplies.
The Garden Club would also like to thank:
- Grace Church for coordinating the donation of all perennial plants with Uncle John's Plant Farm in Columbia Station.
- Mrs. Mary Draves for designing the plant layout and assisting with the planting.
- Berea Kiwanis Club for their $650 donation, making our Koi Pond a reality.
- Berea Federation of Teachers for their $250 donation towards garden maintenance.
- BCSD Buildings and Grounds Department for providing water sources, electrical outlets, and mural installation.
- Mrs. Botzman and the BMMS Builders Club for helping maintain the gardens and set up for the event.
- Mrs. Pearl for her dedication at weekly Garden Club meetings and weekend work.
- Our incredible students for their hard work and belief in this project.
Thank you to Mrs. Wheeler, Mr. Draves, Mr. Velotta, and the BMMS Building Committee for their support. Without them, this project would not have been possible.
Lastly, a special thank you to Mr. Pearl, who runs the Garden Club and has been instrumental in its success.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by the event.
Fourth Graders Unite at "Say It Summit"
We hosted our annual "Say It Summit," a dynamic two-day event that brought together 4th graders from our three elementary schools!
The summit was all about fostering a sense of community among our students as they prepare to transition to middle school in the fall. With a focus on promoting inclusivity, resolving conflicts, and celebrating our unique identities, the event was both fun and impactful.
Led by our dedicated staff and enthusiastic student facilitators from Berea-Midpark High School, the summit featured a variety of interactive activities that encouraged active participation and meaningful conversations. We loved seeing our students grow and connect during this amazing experience!
A special thank you to class of 2020 graduate Summer Husein for speaking to our students and inspiring them with her journey and insights.

Portrait to Practice
The Portrait of a Titan is a collective vision that articulates aspirations for ALL of our students. The Portrait identifies six key competencies that every student in the Berea City School District should possess by the time they graduate. These competencies are nurtured at every grade level. They are adaptable, communicator, critical thinker, empathetic, innovative, and leader. Our educators are inspiring students to cultivate these essential skills.
BMMS Science Fair Showcases Young Innovators
Eighth graders showcased their incredible projects at the Berea-Midpark Middle School Science Fair. These young scientists impressed the judges with their innovative experiments, creativity, and knowledge. The science fair truly highlighted the Portrait of a Titan competency of being an innovator. Students pursued imaginative solutions to various problems, addressed both local and global issues, and took risks in their scientific endeavors. Through their dedication and hard work, they demonstrated exceptional skills in developing, organizing, and managing their projects, making the science fair a huge success.
BPE Garden Club Honors Veterans with 15-Year Tradition of Planting Flowers
Brook Park Elementary School's Garden Club planted flowers at the Veterans Monuments at Kennedy Park in honor of veterans, safety forces, and those who are currently in the military. Thank you to Mayor Orcutt, Brian Beyer (Service Director and former Brook Park Memorial student), and Jeff Elliott (Service Department) for preparing the garden beds and purchasing the flowers. The Garden Club's actions demonstrate the Portrait of a Titan competency of empathy by honoring veterans, safety forces, and current military personnel. Their dedication to maintaining this tradition for over 15 years further highlights their deep understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by these individuals.
BMHS Students take First Place National Social Media Campaign Contest
The Polaris Broadcasting & Video Production and Marketing & Entrepreneurship satellite programs at Berea-Midpark High School was awarded 1st place in the national Just Drive/Create Real Impact Social Media Campaign Contest!
This outstanding achievement demonstrates the creativity, dedication, and hard work of our talented students and their instructors. The team's campaign, which focused on promoting safe driving, stood out among numerous entries from across the country. Their innovative and impactful message resonated with the judges, earning them the top spot.
This accomplishment highlights the Portrait of a Titan competency of being an effective Communicator. Our students demonstrated exceptional communication skills by crafting a compelling message that resonated with their audience.
Congratulations to the entire team for this well-deserved honor. Your commitment to spreading awareness about the importance of safe driving is truly inspiring. Keep up the excellent work, and continue to make us proud! Watch the winning video below.
4th Graders Showcase Entrepreneurial Skills at Market Day Event
Miss Boltz's and Miss Chapman's classes hosted a fantastic Market Day event at Brook Park Elementary School!
Over the past few weeks, 4th grade students have learned all about entrepreneurship, goods and services, budgeting, banking, profits, and the basics of business, including competition and marketing.
They recently put their knowledge into action! These young entrepreneurs chose products to sell, created marketing strategies, and made their goods. They showcased their hard work to their fellow students and family members.
These students embodied several "Portrait of a Titan" competencies by demonstrating critical thinking, innovation, adaptability, and communication skills throughout this project. We are so proud of their efforts!

The Berea Board of Education holds regular community conversations to give the public access to board members outside of the formal public participation setting of a meeting. Residents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss any concerns they may have with two board members during a 30 minute time-slot set aside prior to each regular scheduled Board of Education meeting. The goal of this effort is to more effectively connect with the public and learn more about the community.
