Dear Families,

As we move through September, I want to take a moment to recognize what a big transition this month can be—for children and caregivers alike. Starting preschool, or returning after the summer, brings new routines, new friendships, and new opportunities for growth. Your children—our students—are transitioning well to the caring and welcoming classrooms that make up Natick Preschool. Our staff is nothing short of inspirational as they thoughtfully meet the needs of our youngest learners and spark joy in learning and play. Over these first weeks, students are focused on (re)learning routines, making friends, and practicing self-regulation—important goals in building community for our 3–5-year-olds. Teachers will share more in their classroom newsletters.

We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a safe and orderly arrival and dismissal across all program sites. Your promptness at pick-up is helpful, as staff often have meetings immediately afterward.

Thank you for the trust you place in us each day. We know the start of school can feel like a big leap for little ones (and for parents, too), and we are here to support every step along the way. As always, please reach out if you have questions, ideas, or want to share how your child is adjusting at home. We value your partnership and look forward to a joyful year ahead!

Warmly,
Cori

Call for Interest: School Council Membership Call for Interest: School Council Membership

We are looking for representation from family members across the preschool sites to join our Preschool School Council this year. The council meets throughout the year (monthly) to discuss school goals, family engagement, and community initiatives. If you are interested, please reach out—I would love to have your voice at the table! If you are interested in participating in School Council, please complete this form. (If you indicated interest last year, please resubmit this form so that we have a complete list of all who are interested) Thank you!

What We're learning What We're learning

In the classrooms this month, children have been and will continue to explore "All About Me" themes, learning about themselves and their classmates. We will talk about families, feelings, and friendships, while practicing important routines like lining up, sharing materials, and taking care of our classrooms. Teachers are weaving in early literacy and math skills through songs, stories, and hands-on activities.

Upcoming: We’ll begin exploring fall changes in nature—leaves, apples, and pumpkins!

Positive Behavior Systems and Supports: "Little Reds Care"

At Natick Preschool, we use a school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) approach called Little Reds Care to create a consistent, nurturing, and predictable environment for every child.

Our motto:

  • We take care of ourselves

  • We take care of each other

  • We take care of our school

What this looks like: educators explicitly teach, model, and reinforce what safe, respectful, and responsible behavior looks like in classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, on buses, and in shared spaces—all year long.

We celebrate positive choices with Little Reds recognition cards, class shout-outs, and schoolwide celebrations that highlight effort, cooperation, and kindness—helping children see themselves as valued members of our community.

When challenges arise, staff respond with supportive, developmentally appropriate strategies that redirect, teach replacement skills, and repair relationships—so discipline becomes an opportunity to learn and grow.

By weaving PBIS into daily routines, we nurture children’s independence, empathy, and self-regulation while strengthening the sense of belonging that helps every child thrive.

Supporting Your Preschooler’s Transition Into the School Year

Starting (or returning to) preschool is an exciting milestone! It can also bring big feelings—for children and adults alike. Big feelings are normal. Below are a few gentle reminders and strategies to help ease the transition and set the stage for a positive school year.

Tips for a Smooth(er) Start

Establish routines: Consistent morning and bedtime routines help children feel secure and ready for the day.

Talk about school: Share stories or draw pictures together about what your child does in preschool.

Name and validate feelings: It’s okay if your child feels a little nervous or sad at drop-off. Acknowledge their feelings and reassure them that school is a safe and happy place. “You are sad and I know you will do a great job at school." Grown ups come back.

Keep good-byes short and positive: A quick hug, a smile, and a confident “See you soon!” helps your child adjust more smoothly. Adopt a “good bye ritual” that can feel predictable (a phrase, a “secret” funny handshake, or hand to heart squeeze)

Celebrate small successes: Notice brave moments (e.g. “you walked in on your own! That was so brave”) Whether it’s sharing a toy, trying a new activity, or saying goodbye with fewer tears, noticing these milestones builds confidence.

Encourage Independence: Preschoolers are learning to do things “all by myself.” Practice at home with:

  • Carrying their backpack into school

  • Putting on backpacks and coats

  • Washing hands

  • Making simple choices (choose between two snacks, two books, etc.)

These little steps go a long way in building confidence and readiness!
