Nathan Twining News
December 1, 2023
Hello Twining Families,
We’ve had a great month of October at Twining! As we wrap up the first quarter for our middle school students, we’re looking forward to our upcoming Thunder Rally celebration. This event will give us the opportunity to recognize our Students of the Quarter and celebrate as a school for reaching our Lightning Strikes goal, a major part of our Positive Behavior Support reward system that reinforces how Thunderbirds S.O.A.R. by being Safe, Organized, Accountable, and Respectful.
Our students are extremely close to earning a reward where they'll earn the chance to pie teachers in the face, a reward our students are already very excited about! We’re so proud of their hard work, positive choices, and school spirit this quarter.
We’re also very much looking forward to and would love to extend an invitation to our Veteran’s Day Program on Thursday, November 6th.
November brings a time of reflection and thankfulness, and I want to give thanks to the families who place their trust in us each day to support your children, both academically and behaviorally.
We’re grateful for your partnership and look forward to another great month ahead at Twining!

Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) 5-year grant
Nathan F. Twining Elementary and Middle School is the fortunate recipient of a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) 5-year grant: Behavior Intervention at Twining (BIT) or Project BIT. What does this mean?
With the $500,000 funding provided for Project BIT, resources, supplies, and staff will be utilized to support and prepare all military-connected Twining students for success behaviorally, socially, and emotionally resulting in improved academic achievement in core content areas. The ultimate goal is for our K-8 students to show an increase in positive behaviors each and every day.
What does this mean for students? Our students will be taught clearly defined behavioral expectations with a common language. Expected student behaviors will be recognized in a variety of positive ways, e.g. Lightning Strikes, Thunderstruck awards, Students of the Quarter, verbal praise, recognition at school assemblies, etc. Moreover, a unified system for responding to and tracking inappropriate student behaviors will be implemented.
Ultimately, Twining staff and parents working collectively in the best interest of all our students will ensure the success of Project BIT. The grant is an additional resource for our military-connected students and their families to experience an education that promotes a positive culture and climate resulting in optimal student achievement for each child.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Below is a map outlining our drop-off and pick-up procedures at Nathan Twining. Please take a moment to review it carefully to ensure a safe and smooth process for all families. Children dropped off before 8:10 should enter the building and eat breakfast. Door coverage begins at 8:10 each morning. During inclement weather, when the temperature, including the “feels like” temperature, is below zero, students will be allowed to enter the building through their designated door starting at 8:10.
A few important reminders:
-
If you are in the pick-up lane, stay in your car until your child comes to you.
-
You are welcome to park in the lot across the street and walk to meet your child, this helps with the traffic flow in our pickup lane.
-
Please continue pulling forward if there are open spots ahead of you so other vehicles can move closer to the exit doors.
-
Students should enter and exit the vehicle only on the school side to avoid stepping into traffic.
-
For students walking or biking home, please have a conversation with them about using the designated crosswalks when crossing the street.
There is increased traffic along Louisiana Street during drop-off and pick-up times, so your cooperation and patience are greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping keep our students and families safe!
