Week 9
Weekly Update
Dear Elmore School Families,
We had a busy week which began with a informative field trip to the Elmore Fire Station for our annual Fire Prevention fieldtrip. Students learned about how to report an emergency, what to do if there is a fire in your home, how to react if you clothes catch on fire, and they learned about fire fighting gear and had a chance to go into one of the fire trucks! I huge thank you goes out to the Elmore community and the firefighters (Adam, Ben, Shawn, and Trevor),who took time from their day to be with us at the Fire Station, and thank you to our chaperones, Paige and Heather, and Lisa Cross for arranging a last minute Bus due to rain.
Students completed their final drafts of their narratives this week and on Thursday we finally shared them with each other. It was great to see students take pride in their work and be so eager to read their stories to their classmates. Our next unit will focus on Opinion writing.
I also began reading assessments this week (F&P's) to get more current data about student's reading levels. I will be doing these with all the first graders and then select second and third graders depending on the results of other assessments.
During math first graders began the next section in Unit 2 this week. This section will focus on representing and solving addition and subtraction problems. 2nd graders to the end of unit assessment and began their 2nd unit, which also has a focus on representing and solving addition and subtraction situation. #rd graders began their final section in Unit 1 and are now matching and creating arrays to represent multiplication expression.
In science this week we began a lesson on the role animals play in the process of seed dispersal. students made models of animals with "fur" and began testing two types of "seeds" to see how some seeds travel on animals fur. We will finish this lesson next week, as we ran out of time on Thursday. On Friday morning, we continued learning about tree identification during our ECO lesson. this week our focus was on looking at the bark of a tree. this becomes especially handy this time of year as the trees with leaves are becoming bare. Students looked at images of bark and used adjectives to describe them. Then they went on a scavenger hunt to try to find a tree that matched their photo. During forest choice, student used peelers to whittle wood, made impressions of leaves in clay, played camouflage, and sampled roasted apples with cinnamon and sugar. A special thanks to our volunteers this week!
Additionally, I would like to thank the families who donated fire wood and kindling this week! We have a good supply that should last us quite a while.
Students have earned their first reading reward! They have collectively read over 4,000 minutes at home!
We will be increasing the number of reading minutes for second grade from 15 minutes to 20 minutes and for third graders from 20 minutes to 30 minutes. Just a reminder that students should fill out their reading logs each night and return it the next morning to earn a ticket. First grade parents can help fill out the reading log, but second and third graders should fill out their own log, as this is part of their accountability and responsibility. If you nee help finding books for your child to read, please reach out.
We will have a Halloween Costume Dress up day on Thursday, October 30th. Students are invited to wear their costumes to school. Costumes should be comfortable, tasteful, not scary or gory, or include weapons. Face paint is allowed, but masks will only be allowed at recess. We do have PE on Thursday (unless it is raining), so students may want to remove their costumes for PE.
We celebrated four birthday over the past couple of weeks. Happy birthday to Kaya, Hallie, Woody, and Birdie!
