CSD Weekly Update
CELEBRATING CENTENNIAL
Centennial School District honored 36 retirees last night at our annual Employee Retirement Dinner at The Fuge where many of our retirees got a chance to be celebrated by many of their fellow colleagues. There was laughter and cheer throughout the evening as many people reminisced about all the memories made while working in the District. We value and appreciate their service to the District and wish them the best in the next chapter of their lives.
Thank you to the Centennial School District School Board for your continued support, and thank you to Sam Cravero, owner of The Fuge, for your generosity and for allowing us to hold such a special event in your beautiful space!
ACADEMICS
Summer Book Packs Spark Reading Excitement
Smiles and excitement filled our schools as students received their Summer Book Packs—bundles of high-quality books to enjoy all summer long! Thanks to a partnership with Nothing But Education, this beloved program has helped place nearly 50,000 books into the hands of K–5 students, supporting early literacy and joyful reading at home. The initiative reflects Dr. Dana Bedden’s lasting impact on our district and his dedication to making reading accessible to all. We thank Dr. Bedden for championing this work and inspiring a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
8th Grade Panther Games!
LCMS and KMS students met for the 4th annual Panther Games, a field day event where the two schools come together. It is a spirited competition and also an introduction for future classmates before entering high school. Congratulations to the Black Team, this year's winner!
Innovation and Exploration Class
Creative problem solvers in the Grade 6 digital literacy course, Innovations & Explorations, collaborated to build functional tools using cardboard. Afterwards, they produced digital media, MP4, and commercials to promote their inventions. More importantly, throughout the 12-class work time, students practiced the art of cooperation and collaboration, essential workforce lifetime skills, as well as Future Ready presentation and communication standards. We are proud of what these scholars have accomplished, now enjoy the shows!
Additionally, a big thanks is extended to all of the LCMS families who donated cardboard for this special endeavor. We couldn’t have done it without your generosity!
Masonic Village Performance
On Wednesday, May 28th, musicians from the Log College Singers and the Log College Jazz Band performed tunes for the residents of the Masonic Village at Warminster nursing home. The residents were tapping their toes and were delighted by the students' performances!
Chief Science Officer End of Year Meeting at the Franklin Institute
On Thursday, May 29, the Centennial School District Chief Science Officers (CSOs) attended an end-of-year meeting at the Franklin Institute. The event began with an icebreaker activity that allowed the CSOs to connect with peers from across Pennsylvania. Next, a panel from the Franklin Institute shared their personal experiences working in STEM fields.
The CSOs then presented their action plans, discussed the outcomes, and reflected on their projects over the past school year. One of the highlights of the Centennial CSOs’ work this year was organizing their first “Women in STEM Career Panel” at William Tennent High School. The event featured female professionals from fields such as biotechnology and medicine who spoke about their career journeys to inspire students.
In recognition of their efforts, the Centennial CSOs received the “Outstanding Action Plan” Award from the Philadelphia Cabinet.
Middle School Junior Model UN
Log and Klinger’s Junior Model UN Club attended their final UN Conference on Thursday, May 15 at Temple University. The goal of Jr. Model UN is to work collaboratively to propose recommendations on solving two of the major world issues from the viewpoint of their assigned nations. Student delegates received badges that included their names, countries (France, India, Panama, and Japan), topics (Gender Inequality or Building Peaceful and Inclusive Societies ), and committee (#1 or #2).
Delegates prepared for this conference by creating position and resolution papers.
Upon arrival, students met collectively to discuss expectations and housekeeping items. Additionally, students were greeted with words of inspiration from keynote speaker, former UN Ambassador to Yemen, Gerald Feierstein.
Students were then split into small conference rooms based on their badges. Once in the conference rooms, delegates introduced themselves to delegates from other schools and received directives from council leaders.
Delegates had the opportunity to present their resolutions, collaborate with other schools representing different countries and to compromise on resolutions presented. Log College student, Haneen Mighri won an Outstanding Delegate Award.
Congratulations to both schools' teams of delegates and for all your hard efforts!

THE ARTS
Bridge Between Cultures By: Caroline Moritz, Class of 2026 & Briena Zenszer, Class of 2025
The power of familial ties is a running current in the sea of young poets, thoughts that can either drown their ideas or allow them to flow rampant in the wake of their creativity. Kalena Viera, a junior at William Tennent High School, discusses the legacy and expectations of her culture. Kalena was a finalist in the Bucks County High School Poet of the Year Contest. Her poems express her conflicting emotions regarding her upbringing as a Puerto Rican growing up in mainland America. Not targeted to be impactful to just her own story, the young poet strived to make her poetry inclusive, relatable to audiences that struggle with their own insecurities regarding their ethnicities. Kalena shared that “People feel less alone when they hear your writing…never think your poems are not good enough because your poems will relate to other people as well.” Reaching out to her community and to those who may feel alone, Kalena’s first poem illustrates a barrier between one of the most basic forms of communication: language.
“¿Soy boricua?” is the introduction to Kalena’s tercet. Using the powerful semantic symbolism of switching between English and Spanish, the poet creates her own identification of her culture by recognizing the lack of unity between the two languages. Torn between what she was expected to become a part of and what she’s been desperately trying to fit into, this first poem demonstrates the disconnection of her culture and how the barrier between language affects her relation to her roots.
Similarly, Kalena’s second poem, “How to Be?” discusses the hierarchical construction of today’s society and the beauty standards for young women such as herself. Often addressing herself as “one of many,” Kalena relates the theme of how she struggles to fit into a world with different standards than her own. Eyes that are a different shade from hers, hair that runs wild instead of pin-straight, standards that are small, but are noticeable in the gaze of the public. Her rhetorical way of addressing what is expected from the world and how she navigates through what she is not and what she is supposed to be is eye-catching to readers in ways unimaginable. The young poet uses a variety of different techniques to make readers conceptualize what it is like for her.
Out of the bird's view and into the body, mind, and soul of Kalena, her third poem, “My Blood” is a descriptive analogy of how her heart is given too easily. Clogging through her lungs as if there is a lack of oxygen, Kalena’s words of how she effortlessly connects the ache of trusting those she shouldn’t, and how those acts come back to attack her, making visible wounds on her body. Like an act of sacrifice, her body coils at the thought of having those wounds inflicted once again.
Each of the three poems intertwines to become a complicated tree of intricate lines of thought from her poems. All speak to the audience in their way: a disconnection from a culture, image expectations, and being too trusting. Her meaning crawls into the crevices of the thoughts of the public, never a solid focus but one that implants itself to make change. Kalena’s poetry is not an act of peace. It is an act of speaking out, of wanting to be made known, of wanting the visibility that she feels others don’t understand not having. In a beautiful set of pieces, Kalena Viera made the reader feel as if her emotions were being absorbed into their own consciousness. Her tercet lights a flame to spotlight the societal expectations of women within various cultures, and the divides that can exist between feelings of belonging.
