3rd Grade
Third Grade is Ready to Learn More in 2024!
Third grade ELA has been working nonstop with a focus on reading and writing nonfiction texts. In reading, students have been identifying text features and explaining how they help us as readers, as well as, practicing and perfecting their independent reading skills. In writing, we wrapped up opinion writing, and plowed ahead into informational writing which connects to our Westward Expansion, Gold Rush, and Immigration social studies units. Finally, all third graders are fortunate to work with Mrs. Long and Ms. Rakowicz on an upcoming photography project which will inspire us to write poems about our objects. We are full steam ahead in ELA! Woot, woot!
Third grade math has been working hard learning about fractions by creating models and partitioning number lines and rectangles to show parts of a whole. We explored comparing and ordering fractions, along with making models and using multiplication and division facts to create equivalent fractions. The next unit we’ll be diving into is Geometry. We will learn about shapes by understanding the properties and attributes of 2 Dimensional shapes. Finally in science, we started learning about the properties of water. The water unit includes fun experiments to investigate surface tension, slope, and what happens when water is heated and cooled. It’s shaping up to be an amazing spring!
5th Grade
A Book of Red, A Book of White
It all depends on your genre appetite.
We all met in our favorite Italian Restaurant!
We believe Billy Joel would forgive us for changing his song a tad.
5th grade students were given a room transformation and suddenly our ELA classrooms were Italian restaurants!
Imagine rooms with dim lighting, pleasant Italian dinner music playing, light chatter about books students are reading samples of, and a light fare of appetizers served by their favorite waiters!
Sadly, no cash tips were left but many tips were shared about the books they enjoyed and now want to read!
Caroling
ACES enjoyed caroling together before the holiday break! Each grade level learned a song to share and everyone enjoyed singing together. It was a fun time for all!
Guest Readers
On December 22nd guest readers visited ACES! Every class had a reader visit and read a picture book or a few chapters of a book to them.
We appreciate the readers taking time out of their busy schedules to share their love of reading and to help our students continue growing their love of reading!
We look forward to the next group of guest readers coming on March 1st!
If you would like to be a Guest Reader in May, Click on the picture to sign up!
Each Friday we celebrate our "High Flyers".
A few of our January Core Value Winners!
You have to go Above and Beyond to earn a High Flyer and look at our bolts who made it happen!
1st Grade
The entire first grade enjoyed "traveling around the globe to learn about different holidays celebrated around the world!
First graders have been really working hard on blending and spelling words with consonant blends, words with suffixes and now a new syllable of v-e (vowel, consonant, silent e).
We are continuing our unit of Information Writing for Trimester 2. this pairs up nicely with our Nonfiction unit for Interactive Read Aloud. Students are starting to be more independent so that by the end of the Trimester they can write one of their own Informational Writing pieces including a hook, 3 details and concluding sentence including transition phrases.
At the beginning of the Trimester we worked on Addition and Subtraction in Math. Some of the concepts Students were introduced to are:
- Define sum and difference
- Understand and explain the meaning of the equal sign
- "Read" addition and subtraction number sentences
We have begun our unit on 2D and 3D shapes and partitioning shapes into equal parts (fractions).
- Compose and distinguish between two and three dimension shapes based on their attributes
*Angles
*Vertices
Our next unit will be Addition Problem Solving.
4th Grade ELA
We are VERY proud of how far our students have come in learning how to write their TDAs (Text Dependent Analysis). In particular, students have got the 5-paragraph format down, and they are great at citing specific evidence. We are continuing to improve in explaining how our evidence supports our answer. Currently, we are developing the complex task of comparing and contrasting two different texts with regard to theme, point of view, perspective, events, and topics.
In our word study, we have moved on to Greek and Latin suffixes and will be focusing on roots next. Finally, in grammar, we’ve learned how to correctly put adjectives in order, how to use relative adverbs, and we’ll soon be studying how the proper use of coordinating conjunctions can improve our sentences.
Mrs. Green and Mrs. Gross encourage you to reach out with any questions regarding your child’s reading abilities and how to help at home. We’re stronger together!
Congratulations
Alloway Creek was represented by 16, 5th graders at the STEM Design Challenge today. One of our teams won 2nd Place, Congratulations Aubrey, Sophia, Mason and Jackson!
Thank you!
Community Aid and the Thunderbolt Foundation came to visit ACES to see the new Fork Farm! The Thunderbolt Foundation received a grant from Community Aid to purchase the Fork Farm, which is a hydroponic growing system. ACES will be using the Fork Farm in kindergarten and 1st grade science lessons as well as STEM classes. The Thunderbolt Foundation is grateful for their partnership and support from Community Aid to enhance learning and community outreach opportunities for LASD students.
Read Across America Week
ACES PTO is the very best, they kicked off Read Across America Week by giving each student a New Book! Here is Mrs. Kelley's Kindergarten Class showing off their new books!
We also had a Boomer’s Book Club Assembly to get the party started!
Students enjoyed listening to a story, meeting Downtown, and learning about the awesome prizes that they can earn from The York Revolution for reading!
Each student received a flyer and bookmark explaining the program.
Here are the prizes students can earn just for reading books!
Single (1 book) - Free ticket to a Rev’s Baseball game
Double (2 books) - Free kids meal
Triple (3 books) - Playground pass
Homerun (4 books) - Baseball hat
If you would like an extra bookmark for a sibling to participate in the reading program please email myersj@lasd.k12.pa.us to request one.
To celebrate Read Across America Week, several 5th grade students, along with a few younger students performed the Dr. Seuss classic story, "The Sneetches." The story is about being proud of who you are as well as not judging others. The students, directed by Ms. Fink, with a set created by Mrs. Biddle, worked hard during Flight School times in the morning to learn about aspects theater and working together. They did an amazing job!
From the Nurse’s Office:
Throughout the school year, there are many illnesses that will be going around school. In order to keep them under control and maintain a healthy environment here at school these guidelines have been established for you to follow:
Fever: your child should have a normal temperature for 24 hours before returning to school. Tylenol and Ibuprofen will mask symptoms of a fever, so this means a normal temperature for 24 hours without the use of these medications.
Vomiting/Diarrhea: your child should have not vomited or had diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
Strep Throat: your child should be on antibiotics for 24 hours and fever-free before returning to school.
If your student is absent for 3 days or more in a row, a doctor’s excuse is required for the absences.
Please remember to put extra clothing in your student’s backpacks for accidents, spills, etc.. the health room is very limited on clothing availability.
If you have not turned in a physical (Kindergarten and new students) or a dental form (K and 3rd grade students) please turn these forms in. The school physician will be conducting physicals during the school year with parent permission, if you are interested in your child getting a physical done at school please contact the school nurse.
Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season,
Cortney Wood, RN, CSN, MSN
