Good Morning,

Thank you to the Parent Council for providing a Winter Workshop event for students, in which all students were able to do a little shopping for their loved ones. Fun was had by all!

Staff have decorated the hallways and doors for the winter holiday stroll. All doorways are decked out in a favorite book title, to keep students excited about reading. Some of the many titles include Little Blue Truck's Christmas, Goodnight Moon, The Snowy Day, We Disagree about this Tree and If I lived in a Snowglobe, just to name a few. Classrooms are able to participate in sensory trails, snowball games, I spy, transportation activities, or building a snowman. It's been a very busy but exciting week!

Important information from the Health Office:

We are beginning to see an uptick in expected illness. In order to maintain the health and safety of the community we want to offer the following information. To prevent wide spread infections of colds and flu you can follow these guidelines on when to stay home and when to come to school. Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever must remain at home until "fever free" for a minimum of 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities upon return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. If your child is out of school for 3 days or more please bring a doctor's note upon return.

Consider keeping your child at home for extra rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

● Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough

● Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)

● Headache

● Stomach ache

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

● Fever (greater than 100 degrees and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, for a minimum of 24 hours)

● Vomiting (even once, must be vomit free for 24 hours before returning)

● Diarrhea

● Chills

● General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches

● Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough

To help prevent the flu and other colds, practice good hygiene habits with your children:

● Wash hands frequently

● Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth

● Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a tissue, throw it away and then wash hands

● Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Important information for students attending Kindergarten Fall 2024.

Kindergarten registration for next year will be opening soon so to prepare for sibling placements we are asking you to take a moment to fill out this brief survey, below. Given rising enrollments in classrooms across the district, the knowledge of siblings is more important than ever to prepare our classes. Your help with this is much appreciated, if you have any questions please reach out to our Family Engagement Center at familyengagement@weymouthps.org

Help us reach our goal of 10,000 books

One of the most important gifts we can give our children is to help them learn to read and write so that they can succeed in school and beyond. Confident, active readers are able to use their reading skills to follow their passions and curiosity about the world. We all read for a purpose: to be entertained, to take a journey of the imagination, to connect with others, to figure out how to do something, and to learn about history, science, the arts, and everything else.

We hope to foster the love of reading in our students. Please help us by helping your child read each day. Attached is a reading chart that your child can color each time they read a book. Bring the reading chart to school once all apples are colored and your child will receive a Super Reader sticker. You may choose to only read 10 books per month or submit as many reading charts as you want. We will be keeping track by classroom. If JECC students reach the goal of 10,000 books, we will have a Bubble party at the end of the year.

Help our students reach their goal!

News from the Special Education Department

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requires all public school districts to periodically evaluate special education programs and services provided within the district. The Weymouth Public Schools has contracted with ACCEPT Education Collaborative to evaluate inclusive special education services provided to students in grades PreK through Grade 5. Parent/caregiver feedback is a valuable part of this program evaluation. An online parent/caregiver survey will be shared with families whose children recieve inclusive special education next week. We look forward to your feedback and thank you for your participation in this process.
