Principal's Update
This newsletter is filled with many of the activities that are happening at U-32, and I want to talk about some of the projects that we are just starting to work on. We are looking for more ways for our students to meet our vision of contributing to our global community. That means we need to start by developing more opportunities for our students to interact with the global community. To that end, we are developing partnerships with organizations such as SPIRAL, whose mission is to promote cross-cultural learning and understanding through international education and exchange. With SPIRAL, we have started a Chinese Club, where students learn about the culture and language of China with a native speaker. We are also building partnerships with a school in Nepal through GoGlobalVT. We have a group of teachers that will be traveling to Nepal during February break to start the partnership with a school that students can travel to in the future and work with virtually throughout the year. We are working on connecting our Model UN club to a school in Rostock, Germany so we can partner with them and learn from one another about global politics. We are hoping to travel to Rostock and participate in an international Model UN conference. These opportunities, along with our language classes, will provide more students with the chance to explore our world and learn how they can contribute to the global community.
If you would like to get involved or have an idea for other programs, please reach out and let me know. I look forward to our students engaging in our world so that they can be the leaders of tomorrow.
Thanks,
Steven Dellinger-Pate

and the Winooski Valley High School District Festival recap!
U-32 Model United Nations Club to Princeton University MUN
Last week, some policy-minded juniors and seniors traveled to Princeton University for a weekend of Model United Nations. Students had to research their topics, which included A.I. in warfare, NATO expansion, women's rights and the Manhattan Project. They also wrote a position paper which showed the stance of their country or person represented, wrote speeches, and debated over resolutions. In their down time, students got a tour of the Princeton University campus, and met up with U32 alumni Jack Thompson. It was a very rigorous and full weekend!
Our club meets on Wednesdays during callback in Studio 32.
French III Update - Cultural Food Unit
In French III, we are wrapping-up the Cultural Food Unit with students each presenting a dish from a different French speaking country.
Each student makes a slideshow with pictures and keywords to present their dish to the class in French. They prepare the dish at home, bringing enough for everyone in the class to sample it.
Here are 3 pictures from my French III class eating Yassa, a traditional Senegalese dish, the traditional way, with their right hand.

Food Service Update
We have successfully gotten through the first 64 days of School year, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind students and parents of a few things that have been slipping.
First thing I need to take note of is the meal program itself and what requirements are needed for each meal to be counted as Free. All meals for breakfast and lunch must contain 3 of 5 components.
The 5 components are as follows:
- Meat or meat alternative- This includes things like Chicken, tofu, yogurt, ground beef, pork, and sometimes beans.
- Fruit- we offer 2-3 fruits daily for students to choose from
- Vegetable- this is usually included in most meals we serve but there is always an option for a different one than what we are serving with the meal.
- Whole Grain- We try and serve mostly Whole grain items however there are a few dishes that are not Whole grain compliant due to availability.
- Milk- we offer a skim chocolate milk and a 1% plain milk each day.
In order for students to claim a free meal, they must have 3 components on their tray at time of check out. We try to remind students however, we have noticed students ignoring us on a regular basis. We have let it slide a bit over the last few weeks however, we really need to begin enforcing this policy with more vigor. Therefore, if a student does not have all components necessary we will have to begin charging for meals. This will lead to balances on student’s accounts that will need to be paid off weekly, as we do not accept negative balances.
The last thing is I wanted to remind everyone of Nutrislice and order cut off times. All breakfast orders need to be in the system before 5:30 each morning to guarantee you a smoothie, or hot breakfast sandwich. We make over 80 hot breakfasts and 40 smoothies a day, but unless you pre-order them in Nutrislice they are a first come first served items, and often go fast.
Lunch items, including pre-order lunch meals (salads, wraps, sandwiches), and Vegetarian items all need to be ordered by 8:30 am. If you do not preorder Vegetarian items that are available a PB&J will be available, but we can no longer make extra vegetarian items as we have been throwing them away due to students not needing them.
SCHOLARSHIPS: The Next Step After Applications
It is always a good idea, after focusing on looking for and applying to colleges, that a student and family begin looking for scholarships. Scholarships can range in amounts and duration, ranging from $100 to thousands of dollars over a four year period. The important thing is to take some time to compete for scholarships. Even the smallest can help. Did you know the cost of some college text books is $100? Be sure to frequent the scholarship site on your Naviance Account. Click on Colleges I Am Applying To, then Scholarships.
The VSAC Scholarship book is another great resource. It is important that along with scholarship applications, that seniors complete the FAFSA and VSAC Vermont Grant. Links to both of these can be found on your Naviance/ Family Connection account.
Remember…….. The only way to be considered for a scholarship is to apply for a scholarship. VSAC Scholarship Applications are due no later than February 14th, 2024.

On November 6th students who took the PSAT test on Oct 11th had access to their PSAT scores online. Students received a video explaining how to interpret their PSATs & test booklet.. Students are encouraged to review their results and look at areas where they may have struggled. PSAT is a great practice tool for the SAT.
PreACT results were returned to U-32 students in early November. Students were emailed a pre recorded presentation prior to receiving their results to help them interpret their scores. Students were encouraged to review their results and to look at areas where they may have struggled. ACT has free test prep available at actacademy.com
