Message from Jennifer

What a wonderful Halloween Carnival! My heart is full after seeing our Sunset View community come together for another incredible evening of fun, laughter, and connection. Events like this don't just happen—they are the result of so many people generously giving their time, energy, and talents to create something special for our children and families.

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Brooke McCoy and Lana Hoover, whose dedication, creativity, and countless hours of hard work made this event possible. Also, a big shoutout to Bivin Sadler for his expert hosting skills during our annual costume contest! To every parent volunteer who helped plan, set up, run an activity, or clean up afterward, please know how much you are appreciated. We truly could not do this without you! A special thank you to our 4th grade parents for creating such an amazing haunted house. What a labor of love! And to Bert, Cristal, and their entire family, thank you for sharing your time and talents with us and treating everyone to such delicious food.

One of the things I love most about Sunset View is the way our families show up for one another and for our school. The Halloween Carnival is such a beautiful reminder of what makes this community so special. Thank you for the joy you bring to our campus and for the memories you help create for our students. We are so fortunate to have you!

Trait of the month: Belonging đź’™

Can you believe it’s already October?! This month, we are focusing on belonging and what it means to help everyone feel welcomed and included at school. In classrooms, I am popping in to discuss friendships, the difference between rude, mean, and bullying behavior, ways to resist bullying, and how to include others. We are practicing the Sunset View Way of including others by noticing who might be left out, inviting others to join, and choosing kindness in our everyday interactions.

Continue the Conversation at Home! Ask your child:

  • What does it look like to help someone feel like they belong?

  • What could you do if you notice someone sitting alone or being left out?

  • How can you stand up for someone or respond if you see someone being treated unkindly?

SDUSD Updated Screen Time Policy

As we kick off the new school year, San Diego Unified is introducing a new learner-centered technology resolution to help students stay focused, healthy, and engaged in learning.

Beginning August 10, students will see a few important changes:

  • Video-streaming platforms, such as YouTube, will only be available on district-issued Chromebooks when enabled by teachers for instructional purposes.

  • Non-instructional gaming platforms will still be prohibited on district-issued devices.

  • Computer carts will be removed from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms, while ensuring students with Individualized Education Plans, 504 Plans, or language-learning needs continue to receive appropriate access.

These updates are part of our commitment to creating learning environments where technology supports student learning, safety, wellness, and healthy development.

As a parent, you can also reduce screentime and non-instructional use of Chromebooks by activating your Blocksi Parent account to monitor and restrict access when your student is not at school. To learn more about how to use Blocksi, read this Blocksi Parent Job Aid.

To learn more about the new resolution click here and click here for the press release.

Playgrounds Closed Before and After School

Our playgrounds are closed to families before and after school each day. This is for the safety of all parties, as we do not have supervision nor support should accidents happen. It also allows our custodial staff to focus on getting the campus ready for the next school day and avoid extra clean-up. We appreciate your understanding!

Attendance

Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.

When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2000 by 9:30 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email sunselm@sandi.net.

Any child arriving after 9:00 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.

Food Services Information - Universal Free Meals

EVERY student is welcome to join us for FREE Breakfast and Lunch each school day.

  • Universal FREE Meals start the first day of the 2026 - 2027 School Year.

SDUSD Phone Free School Day Policy

The San Diego Unified Board of Education adopted the new Phone Free School Day Policy during the summer of 2025. This means cell phones and smart watches should be "Off and Away" during school hours. Students may not use their devices during school hours. This includes calls or texts home. Students may use classroom, main office, or health office phones for communication home. Parents can contact the school directly if you need to contact your child. Student cell phones must be turned off and stored in backpacks (not pockets). Smart watches may not be used as communication devices during the school day. Thank you for your partnership in enforcing this policy.

NO DOGS ALLOWED ON CAMPUS

Although we love your pets, they are not allowed on campus. Please do not bring pets past the school gates. Please see the district policy below.

Policy Reminder - Animals on Campus

- Animals are permitted at school only when needed for the instructional program and when

under the strict control of qualified instructors or handlers.

-Animals must be obtained from a reliable source and have written certifications that

they are in good health and are not carriers of dangerous disease-causing organisms.

- Hamsters, white rats, black widow spiders, rattlesnakes, and banded psittacine

(parrot-like) birds are too dangerous to have at school.

-Therapy and Service Dogs are allowed with proper certification.
