It was another exciting week of learning at Willowick Middle School! Students in Mrs. Ross’ sixth-grade ELA classes brought literature to life through a fun and interactive Sweet Shop activity inspired by Roald Dahl’s Boy: Tales of Childhood. Students explored a variety of old-fashioned candies using their senses of touch, taste, and smell, making meaningful connections to the story. Not all candy tasted as they expected. Meanwhile, students in Mrs. Pietrzak’s Life Skills class welcomed a special guest from the Willowick Fire Department. The Fire Captain reinforced important safety topics, including e-bike safety, CPR/AED procedures, injury prevention, and responding to emergencies, helping students connect classroom lessons to real-world situations. Finally, Miss Alesnik’s ROX (Ruling Our eXperiences) group gathered for their annual group photo! Throughout the school year, these young ladies will continue building confidence, strengthening friendships, and developing valuable leadership and life skills.

Beginning Monday, October 19, students will no longer be permitted to use restrooms during passing time between classes. Students are expected to report directly to their next class on time. Restroom use will continue to be permitted during class through our SmartPass system. As a result, we are increasing the number of hall passes students can use per day.

This change is intended to reduce hallway congestion, improve student supervision, minimize tardiness, and ensure students are in class and ready to learn. We appreciate your support in reinforcing these expectations with your child.

Students who have medical exemptions will continue to have restroom access as needed.

Future-Ready Finances Future-Ready Finances

The Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools Board of Education has placed a proposed 0.75% earned income tax on the November 3, 2026, ballot. The outcome will determine whether the district continues operating two comprehensive high schools or transitions to one.

The proposed 0.75% earned income tax would generate about $14 million a year on a continuing basis, with roughly $9.6 million for operations and $4.4 million dedicated to permanent improvements such as buildings, technology, security, and buses. A resident with $50,000 in active income would pay approximately $375 per year.

An earned income tax is applied to the active income of district residents and does not apply to

passive income, such as Social Security benefits, pensions, capital gains, interest, dividends, or

other investment income.

If the proposed tax is approved, under the district's current plan:

● North and South would continue operating as two comprehensive high schools.

● Other reductions would happen on a more measured timeline.

● We would have more time to evaluate enrollment, building use, and long-term facility

needs.

What happens if the earned income tax levy fails? Beginning in the 28-29 school year, the

Board would need to implement the following cost-savings measures:

● Reduction in district staffing to match new footprint

● Consolidation to one high school and one middle school

eBikes & Electric Scooters at Dismissal eBikes & Electric Scooters at Dismissal

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

With the increase in eBikes and electric scooters this school year, we are asking families to help reinforce an important dismissal safety expectation.

Students should not ride eBikes or electric scooters in the school parking lot, through dismissal traffic, or on the sidewalks immediately adjacent to the building. Students must walk their eBike or scooter until they are safely away from the building and dismissal area before beginning to ride. This creates a significant safety concern for both students walking and vehicles exiting the property.

Please remind your child that eBikes and electric scooters must be walked while on school property during dismissal. Students who do not follow this expectation may lose the privilege of bringing their eBike or electric scooter onto school property during the school day.

Thank you for helping us keep dismissal safe for all of our Rangers.

Arrival & Dismissal Information Arrival & Dismissal Information

zoom_out_map

Arrival Procedures:

School doors open to students at 7:10 AM, when adult supervision begins. Students should not enter the main entrance or wait in the vestibule before 7:10 AM.

  • Walkers and Car Riders (7:10–7:30 AM): Students should report directly to the gym upon arrival. Students eating breakfast may report to the cafeteria.
  • Bus Riders: Students will enter through the rear bus loop entrance and remain in the adjacent hallway under adult supervision until 7:30 AM. Students eating breakfast may report to the cafeteria.

Breakfast is served in the cafeteria beginning at 7:10 AM.

Morning Hallway Transition (7:30–7:40 AM):

At 7:30 AM, a bell will ring, allowing students to visit their lockers and organize their materials for the day. Students who have PE before lunch should wear or carry their gym shoes.

Students must be in their homeroom locations by the 7:40 AM bell, when homeroom begins.

Dismissal Procedures:

  • Walkers and Car Riders: Eighth period ends at 2:20 PM. After the afternoon announcements, walkers and car riders will exit through the main entrance. Adults will be stationed in front of the building to help ensure a safe dismissal. Adult supervision ends at 2:30 PM, so students may not wait in the lobby or front vestibule after that time.
  • Bus Riders: Bus riders will be dismissed after walkers and car riders. They will exit through the rear bus loop doors. Seventh- and eighth-grade students will walk through the yellow eighth-grade hallway and down the shared Royalview hallway to the bus loop. Staff members will hold signs displaying bus numbers to help students locate their buses.

Important Car-Rider Safety Procedure:

Students are not permitted to walk through the parking lot during dismissal. This procedure is non-negotiable and is necessary to protect students while vehicles are moving through the lot.

Families picking up students must enter the car line. Students will wait along the sidewalk near the bike racks, adjacent to the building’s main entrance doorway. Parents and guardians should not park in the parking lot and ask their children to walk to their vehicles, as this creates serious safety concerns.

Fidgets and Wired-only Headphones Fidgets and Wired-only Headphones

User uploaded image

Use of Fidgets at School

Fidgets can be a helpful support for student focus when used appropriately. To maintain a productive learning environment, all fidgets brought to school must be small, quiet, and non-disruptive. Acceptable examples include stress balls, small spinners, and fidget cubes. The NeeDoh Squishies are not permitted at school because of their larger size, they often pop-open when squeezed and release liquid and other items and have become distracting in classrooms.

Fidgets should be used only when absolutely necessary to support focus, not as toys or for entertainment. If a fidget becomes distracting to others or interferes with learning, teachers have the authority to confiscate the item. Students who misuse fidgets may receive a consequence and/or lose fidget privileges.

Students who require a fidget to support focus should bring their own to school, if absolutely necessary.

Use of Wired Headphones at School

Electronic headphones and earbuds, on occasion, are used to support classroom learning through programs such as Amplify in ELA or during testing when staff permission is given. When used for these instructional purposes, they can be an appropriate and helpful learning tool. Earbuds or headphones must be wired. Bluetooth and wireless headphone are not permitted during the school day.

Electronic headphones and earbuds should not be worn on heads or ears during hallway transitions or anywhere in the building without staff permission. Instead, they should be carried to class. This expectation supports safety and minimizes disruptions to learning. Students must be able to hear adult directions at all times, especially in the event of an emergency.

Highly valuable or expensive headphones are NOT recommended to be brought to school.

Students in middle school are to have their personal communication devices in their lockers during the school day. We are asking our families to support our efforts in enforcing this Ohio Law and Board Policy in order to keep distractions to education and learning minimal by not accessing devices during the school day for social and entertainment purposes. Headphones must be wired-only devices to use for educational purposes.

Our focus needs to be on student learning at all times of the school day. Students are frequently reminded of this policy throughout the school year by staff and administration. Consequences are assigned to students who repeatedly abuse this policy.
