Principal Message

Hello to all Washington families! I simply cannot believe it is May! There is lots going on next week, from our concert to Teacher Appreciation Week to Wellness Week. Take a look so you stay in the know:

~ Spring Music Concert is upon us! This is NEXT TUESDAY, May 6th. Concert times are 8:30 (J-R), 10:00 (S-Z), & 1:00 (A-I). We mistakenly had 1:30 listed in a few places, so please note: the afternoon concert is at 1:00 NOT at 1:30. Sorry for any confusion. Pleae try to attend, if at all possible, based on the first letter of your last name. If that isn't possible, we understand, but it does really help with crowd control if we spread that out a bit.

~ Save the Date: For those of you who like to plan ahead, the Washington Spring Picnic will be held on Thursday, May 22 from 5:00-6:30.

~ CogAt: Every year in February, Mankato Area Public Schools gives the Cognitive Abilities Screening Form (CogAT) to students in grade 2 and to students new to the district. The February 2025 CogAT data is now live within Infinite Campus. Please use the link that follows for directions on how to locate the data in Infinite Campus and for additional information about the CogAT: Infinite Campus Parent Communication Results 24-25.

~ Attention 5th Graders & Parents: We’re excited to welcome students to middle school and want to make sure families feel informed and supported as we approach the start of the school year. The first day of school for our incoming 6th graders will be TUESDAY, August 26. On this day, 6th grade students will have the building to themselves—a great opportunity to ease into middle school life. They’ll spend the day getting comfortable with their new surroundings, practicing locker combinations, walking through their schedules, and building connections with teachers and classmates. While the optional 6th grade transition camp is no longer taking place in the middle of summer break, this first-day experience is designed to offer all students similar support in a more focused, real-time setting.

Our 7th and 8th grade students will join us starting WEDNESDAY, August 27. We’ve heard a few questions from families and elementary school staff about the transition camp, so we wanted to provide this update and will continue to communicate clearly as the first day approaches. We’re looking forward to a great start to the year for all of our students!

~ Survey Time: This time of year, we gather feedback in surveys about any number of things. The Leader In Me survey is below (kudos to those of you who have already done this!!!!)--please take the time to fill it out if at all possible.

We also gather feedback for Title I. Here's that info: Our school is a schoolwide Title I school serving all students. Schools receiving federal funding for Title I, Part A are required to gather feedback about Title I programming. Please complete this short survey by Friday, May 9th.

Title I Parent Survey Thank you in advance for your time and participation.

~ Transportation 2025-26 Registration Form: Need busing for the 2025-2026 school year?Transportation Registration is now open and available online. Not sure if your student qualifies for transportation, click here to find out. If your student qualifies for transportation, please complete the form by clicking on this link.

If you do not have access to a device, you can visit the Central Registration Office at the Intergovernmental Center (10 Civic Center Plaza) to complete a form. All forms are due by July 10th in order for busing to be available on the first day of school. Students who ride special education busing will have transportation arranged by the Special Education Office and case manager.

Thanks for your continued support of our work--your partnership matters to each child's growth and success!

To the Families of our Students,

As you know, Washington Elementary is proud to be a Leader In Me School. We value using the 7 Habits as our leadership framework and value all this brings to our school community. Starting April 24, our school will be administering the Measurable Results Assessment (MRA), a Leader In Me survey and reporting system designed to provide insights into the progress of our school. In order to provide a holistic picture of what is going on in our school, the MRA includes three different surveys; 1) one completed by all school staff, 2) one completed by students in grades 4 & 5, and 3) one completed by the families of students in all grades. We hope you will participate so we can use the feedback to make our school an even better place for students and families. If you have any questions about the surveys or wish to see a list of questions, please contact the school’s front office.

FAMILY SURVEY

WHAT: Online survey completed by one member of each household. Survey typically takes about 5 minutes to complete. Questions relate to the experiences you and your child have at our school. Answers are anonymous--to encourage people to be honest and open, no names and other identifying information will be collected.

WHEN: The survey is now available for you to take through May 8.

HOW: The survey can be taken from any computer, smartphone, or tablet with internet access. Simply click on this link.

STUDENT SURVEY: This survey will be completed by students in grades 4 & 5 on a computer at school. The survey typically takes 15-20 minutes to complete. Students privately answer questions about their attitudes and behaviors--and can skip questions and stop anytime they choose. Students who do not wish to participate in the survey, or whose parents choose to deny permission for their participation, will be provided with an appropriate alternative activity (e.g. quiet reading) while the surveys are being administered. If you have a child in grades 4 & 5 and DO NOT want them to participate in the MRA Student Survey, please let your child's teacher know and/or call the front office by Monday, April 28. Please know that your decision to deny permission will not impact your child’s grades or your relationship with any member of our school.

We appreciate your input and feedback!

On Friday, April 25th, after months of hard work, nineteen fifth graders participated in the Math Masters competition at Bethany Lutheran College, and they did a fantastic job!

To celebrate their achievement, we enjoyed half-price Toppers pizza, generously provided by the PTO.

Leader In Me Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw Leader In Me Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw

During the month of May, our entire school will focus on Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw. As parents/guardians, your understanding and support of our leadership work in this habit is very appreciated! I have found this language and learning to benefit ALL, not just students!

Habit 7, Sharpen the Saw, from "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," emphasizes the importance of ongoing self-renewal and continuous improvement. It involves balancing and nurturing the four dimensions of our nature: physical, mental, spiritual, and social/emotional. This habit, like sharpening a saw, helps us maintain our effectiveness by consistently investing in ourselves.

This habit is called Sharpen the Saw because dull or rusty tools are much less effective than clean and sharp tools. The same is true for us. This habit is about preserving and enhancing the greatest asset we have to deal with life and contribute—ourselves. It’s about balancing the four dimensions of body, heart, mind, and spirit.

As we spend time on each of these four dimensions of self, we create growth and change in our lives. We have the energy and vitality to practice the other six habits. We increase our capacity to produce results and handle the challenges around us.

Without spending regular time on renewal, we’ll quickly find ourselves on the path to burnout and exhaustion.
