OLHMS Update (9/30/25)
D123 Late Start Tomorrow (10/1/25)
Tuesday's Top of the Mind
Did you know that tomorrow is a D123 Late Start Day?
Throughout the year at each of our D123 schools we will have a late start time (1 hour) that provides D123 staff members the opportunity to collaborate and plan for our scholars. Our school day will begin at 9:30 am on Late Start Days. All schedules are adjusted by the hour.
Did you know the Family Conference Scheduler will open tomorrow at 10:00 AM?
Family Conference scheduler will open tomorrow and close on October 13th. Conferences can be scheduled for phone and in person and will be scheduled via Qmlativ Family Access. Here is a support link below.
Did you know that student progress reports will be coming home at the end of the week?
Families should expect progress reports coming at the end of the week. As part of our transition to traditional grade at the middle school, progress reports will be sent home with scholars on Friday, October 3rd. Families should also expect progress reports emailed from each teacher and a mass mailing with progress reports and additional information.
LEVEL UP
Mustang Families,
Our theme this year is LEVEL UP! Pushing for growth, leading with compassion, and celebrating together as one unstoppable Mustang team.
We’re so proud of our scholars for their effort on the recent NWEA MAP assessments! These results help us better understand how to support each Mustang, and we’re excited to share scholar progress soon as we prepare for October family conferences. Families can also expect NWEA MAP Assessment results to arrive in the upcoming mass mailing, along with a Family Letter explaining NWEA’s new 2025 national norms and how they impact percentile rankings.
As a district, we’ve set a bold goal: 100% of our scholars meeting or exceeding their growth targets in Math and ELA on the MAP Assessment. Every effort, from classroom learning to home support, brings us closer to achieving this together.
Beyond academics, we have plenty to celebrate:
- Pop-Up Guest Chef in Lunch – a fun new experience for scholars in the cafeteria!
- PTSA Open Gym – our first one of the year, bringing Mustangs together outside of class.
- Thank You to our Music Boosters for hosting an amazing Fall Fest event!
- Music Department Spirit Wear Orders Due – don’t miss your chance to show support and Mustang pride!
- D123 Late Start – Wednesday, October 1st.
As always, we’ll continue to live out our Mustang Musts everywhere we go:
Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful.
With Mustang Pride,
Dr. McNichols
Reminders and Updates
D123 Fall Family Conferences
Fall Family Conferences will be held on October 16th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and October 17th from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM. All District 123 families can log in to Skyward/Qmlativ Family Access starting October 1st at 10:00 AM to select their family conference time and date. Online conference scheduling will close on October 13th at 11:59 PM. For more information and resources on scheduling your family conferences, click here.
Progress Reports
Scholar progress reports will be sent home on Friday with each of our scholars!
Our goal is to ensure that all families are informed on student progress in our transition back to traditional grades. Families should expect physical copies of progress reports distributed to scholars on Friday along with individual emails from every teacher. We are also putting together a mass mailing that will include progress reports, Fall NWEA MAP Assessment results, NWEA New Norms, Qmlativ Family Access support and more.The student progress report (Grade and Attendance Analysis) will indicate the current earned grades and attendance as of 9/30/25. Families will see classes/ courses listed without grades. In most cases, these are trimester two and three Encore courses listed without grades since they are future courses, along with lunch listed without a grade since this is scheduled for all of our Mustangs. Families will only see attendance if a student has been absent from school.
Traditional Grades
OLHMS has returned to a Traditional Grading system. This decision was made after thoughtful consideration of feedback from teachers, parents, and students. We believe this change will help support our scholars by aligning more closely with the grading practices and expectations students will experience in high school, and allow for a smoother transition as students rise into the 9th grade.
Grading Scale (No plus or minus grades):
A = 90–100
B = 80–89
C = 70–79
D = 60–69
F = 59 and below
- 70% of the trimester grade will be calculated from: Summative Assessments (i.e. unit tests, major projects, etc.)
- 30% of the trimester grade will be calculated from: Formative Assessments (i.e. quizzes, exit tickets, classwork, homework, etc.)
Please note: As a non-credit-bearing institution, OLHMS will not calculate GPAs or publish honor roll.
Additional Key Information:
Traditional grades will be used across all subjects and grade levels at OLHMS.
Qmlativ Family Access will currently serve as our platform for tracking progress and staying informed. Please check student grades weekly.
Progress reports will be sent and distributed on October 3rd to provide consistent family-school communication.
Assessment Retakes
Retakes will be available for scholars in the Summative Assessment category (70%). Retake procedures for the Summative Assessment category include:
Students will complete a reflection form, which will include the corrected test.
Students are to ensure all classwork/homework/independent work for that unit is completed before the retake date.
Retake dates will be established within 10 days of the graded assessment.
Retakes will not be allowed once the trimester has completed.
Retakes will not be completed during regular instructional time.
STAR and Power Hour
It is great to see so many scholars taking advantage of the opportunity to come in early or stay after school for additional time and support with academics. Please remind our scholars that this time should not be treated as a social opportunity and our school expectations of being safe, responsible and respectful should be maintained at all times. We appreciate everyone's support and partnership. Parents can check out the available times for each grade level on the student portal page!
Qmlativ Family Access
Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 transitioned to Qmlativ (Skyward 3.0) for the 2025-26 school year. Qmlativ offers enhanced features across a wide range of areas, including student information, grades, scheduling, attendance, food service and much more. Hopefully, each of our OLHMS families have logged into the new system!
If you are logging in for the first time to the new Qmlativ Family Access, you will need to click "Forgot Your Username or Password" and follow the steps to log in to your account.
Log in to your account here. Please note, School District 123 does not keep track of passwords, however, your school’s main office can send you a reset link.
For additional information and resources about Qmlativ Family Access, we have created a family resource page on our website with helpful videos to guide you through the new Qmlativ Family Access platform.
Student Portal: Our Mustangs utilize the this site to access their Google Classrooms, Google Drive, Gmail, Skyward and student apps. This is also where daily announcements are posted for students. This is also the location for scholars to select club options.

Cologne and Perfume
We’re glad to see our scholars taking pride in their hygiene and personal care! However, the use of cologne and perfume has become overwhelming at times and is occasionally being applied inappropriately during the school day. To ensure a comfortable learning environment for everyone, we kindly ask that students leave their scented products at home.
Please take a moment to discuss with your child the proper use and appropriate amounts of fragrance. While we appreciate the effort to smell nice, excessive scents can be distracting and overpowering in shared spaces. Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a pleasant and respectful atmosphere for all!
Student Lunch Deliveries
We want to remind families that OLHMS does not allow student lunch deliveries from outside services (such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other vendors). This practice minimizes disruptions and contributes to a safe and structured lunch experience for all students. On the note of lunches, if a student receives a lunch detention, a brown bagged lunch will be delivered to the student. Students are always welcome to bring their own lunch.
School Safety and Drills
As we continue to partner with local agencies, we will refine our practices to ensure safety is always on the forefront of our minds. As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, we continue to closely scrutinize all initial entry into the building to ensure a secure environment for everyone. We kindly remind all families to bring a valid driver’s license or photo ID when picking up a student during the school day. Additionally, visitors are not permitted to leave the main office without a staff escort. These safety procedures are in place to protect our students and staff, and we appreciate your continued cooperation and partnership in maintaining a safe school community. We will also expect that all students, staff and guests wear designated ID's at all times.
Drills: We have completed our first Fire and Severe Weather drills. Please speak with our scholars about the importance of drills in the event of emergencies. We will complete our first Lockdown Drill this week in conjunction with the Oak Lawn Police Department.

Hmm...
Student Device Repair Program:
Your student's device is protected against accidental damage, theft, fire, flood, natural disasters, power surge and vandalism. If your child’s device needs repair, below are the costs associated with each incident during a school year:
1st incident - No Charge (one-time fee waiver)
2nd incident - $25.00
3rd incident - $50.00
Free & Reduced Lunch Reminder
The federal program allowing districts across the country to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of income has expired. At this time, the federal government has not extended the waivers for this school year to allow free meals for all students. As a result, schools across the nation will be reverting back to free and reduced-price meals based on income eligibility guidelines set by theU.S. Department of Agriculture. Families who do not qualify for free or reduced lunch will have to pay for school meals. Students whose families are eligible for free or reduced-price breakfast or lunch will be able to access meals this school year at no cost or a discounted rate. D123 will continue to explore ways we can help families with this adjustment since this may create a financial burden for some of our families. At no point would we ever want any child to go hungry at school. If you would like to apply for free or reduced priced meals, please click here.
Health Examination and Immunization Requirements
There are specific requirements for students entering preschool, kindergarten, second grade and sixth grade, as well as for all new students. Visit our Health Forms & Guidelines page for more information. Please note that these vaccinations and/or health examinations are required by state law.
- All incoming 6th Graders must have a physical and dental report on file.
- All 6th, 7th and 8th Graders interested in sports will need a sports physical to try out for teams.
