Hewitt-Trussville Pride on Display During MLB Playersβ Weekend
Major League Baseballβs 2026 Playersβ Weekend gave players across all 30 teams an opportunity to celebrate the people, places, passions, and causes that have shaped their lives. Held August 21β23, the annual event featured custom gear designed to showcase the personal stories and individuality of players throughout Major League Baseball.
For Kansas City Royals player Tyler Tolbert, Playersβ Weekend provided an opportunity to represent a place that played an important role in his baseball journey: Hewitt-Trussville.
Tolbert took the field sporting custom cleats and a bat featuring Hewitt-Trussville-themed designs, proudly bringing his hometown and school community with him to the Major League stage as he plays for the Kansas City Royals.
The tribute was especially meaningful this year as 2026 marks the 10-year anniversary of Hewitt-Trussvilleβs 2016 State Championship baseball team. Tolbert was a member of that championship team, making his Playersβ Weekend gear a special connection between a milestone from his high school career and his journey in professional baseball.
A decade after helping the Huskies reach the top of Alabama high school baseball, Tolbert continues to carry that Hewitt-Trussville pride with him.
From a State Championship in 2016 to the Major League Baseball diamond in 2026, Tolbertβs Playersβ Weekend gear served as a reminder that the people and places that shape an athlete never leave them. For the Hewitt-Trussville community, seeing the Husky name represented on an MLB field made this yearβs celebration even more special.
Ten years later, the pride of the 2016 Huskies is still making its mark.
HUSKIES MAKE A STATEMENT IN AUBURN πΎ
The Huskies opened the 2026 season with a statement, defeating No. 3 Auburn 56β42 on the road in a game that featured an explosive offensive performance and a resilient defensive effort.
Sophomore quarterback Jack Floyd led the way, accounting for 519 total yards and seven touchdowns. Floyd completed 22-of-26 passes for 360 yards and three touchdowns while adding 159 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
Other standout performances included:
- Jackson Martin: 5 receptions, 165 yards
- DJ Hall: 6 receptions, 69 yards, 1 touchdown
- Daniel Williams: 107 total yards
- Hewitt-Trussville offense: 352 passing yards and 233 rushing yards
- Defense: 4 Auburn turnovers
The Huskies jumped out to a 21β6 lead in the first quarter and carried a 42β28 advantage into halftime after piling up 381 yards in the first half. Despite weather delays and Auburn's efforts to rally, Hewitt-Trussville continued to answer and secured the season-opening victory.
Head Coach Josh Floyd praised his team's ability to handle adversity.
βI just want to say how proud I am of these boys. They were doubted over the last several months, and I am proud of the way they handled the adversity and came out to win.β
He added, βWe are a young team, but a tough one.β
The Huskies certainly made that clear in their season debut.
1β0. 56 points. 519 yards from Jack Floyd. And a whole lot of heart.
The Huskies return home next Friday to take on Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.

Varsity Volleyball Has a Strong Start to Their Season
HewittβTrussville Volleyball delivered an impressive stretch of performances this past week, opening with a dominant 3β0 win over Auburn High School on Thursday night. The Huskies controlled all three sets β 25β16, 25β13, and 25β15 β behind a balanced and efficient team effort. Loren Purnell powered the offense with 10 kills, Christiana Callens anchored the defense with 10 digs, and Kayleigh Nguyen turned in a standout performance with 20 assists and 4 blocks. Tenley Santiago added 4 aces to round out a strong night for the Huskies.
The momentum carried into the weekend as HewittβTrussville put together a 6β2 run at the highly competitive Juanita Boddie Tournament at the Finley Center, advancing all the way to the semifinals. The Huskies opened pool play with convincing wins over James Clemens (2β0), Lawrence County (2β0), and Robertsdale (2β0), dropping only one match to Valor College Prep (1β2). In bracket play, they battled past Mountain Brook (2β1), Austin (2β0), and Homewood (2β0) before falling to McGillβToolen (0β2) in the semifinals to close out a strong weekend showing.
It was a great stretch of competition and another opportunity for the Huskies to grow, compete, and elevate their game. Follow the team throughout the season with the full schedule here:

JV Volleyball
JV Volleyball also faced a challenging slate, beginning with a narrow 2β1 loss to Auburn at home on August 20. The Huskies then traveled to Hoover for tournament play, where they continued to battle through tight matches. After a close loss to Pelham (1β2), JV secured a strong 2β0 win over St. Paulβs to build momentum heading into Saturday. The team added two more victoriesβdefeating DAR (2β1) and Albertville (2β1)βwhile dropping matches to Huntsville (0β2) and Hartselle (0β2). The JV squad showcased determination throughout the weekend, earning multiple wins and valuable experience against a deep field of opponents.
9th Grade Volleyball
9th Grade Volleyball opened the week at home against Auburn on August 20, falling 2β0, but the Huskies quickly bounced back with a strong showing at the Bumpus event on August 21. They earned a hardβfought 2β1 win over Alexandria and followed it with a clean 2β0 sweep of Mountain Brook. The momentum carried into Saturday, where the team split resultsβfalling to Hartselle (0β2), defeating Spain Park (2β0), and closing the day with a tough loss to Hoover (0β2). Across the threeβday stretch, the 9th Grade Huskies demonstrated grit and the ability to respond after setbacks, finishing the week with several quality wins against competitive programs.
HTMS Football Starts with Two Wins
HTMS Football opened the 2026 season with an impressive showing from both the 7th and 8th Grade teams, earning decisive wins over Simmons in the annual jamboree on August 20. The Huskies displayed balance, depth, and earlyβseason confidence on both sides of the ball, setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.
The 7th Grade Huskies powered their way to a 36β20 victory, fueled by a dominant offensive performance. HTMS rolled up 282 rushing yards on 30 carries, with Micah Billups leading the ground attack and steady contributions from John Fox Cence and Graham Bromley. The passing game added 64 yards on six receptions, keeping Simmons off balance throughout the night. Defensively, the Huskies made timely stops, highlighted by Dean Mills breaking through the line for a momentumβshifting sack that energized the team and helped secure the win.
The 8th Grade Huskies followed with an equally commanding effort, defeating Simmons 33β7 behind 345 total yards of offense. William Wilson set the tone with 95 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Teagan Cox delivered a standout performance through the air, completing 7 of 8 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Shaw Deal and Tre Garrick combined for over 125 receiving yards and three scores, showcasing the teamβs explosive playmaking ability. On defense, HTMS held Simmons to a single touchdown and created key momentum plays, including a forced fumble by Joshua Kendrick that helped seal control of the game.
With strong performances across both grade levels, HTMS Football demonstrated toughness, discipline, and early promise as they begin their season. The jamboree offered valuable reps and highlighted emerging leaders ready to carry the Huskies forward.
