2026 Steam expo celebrates 10 years of hi-tech fun and learning
πThe 10th Annual Neshaminy STEAM Expo was held on Wednesday, April 15, at Neshaminy High School. This event has become a highly anticipated tradition since the first one was held in 2015 (it was cancelled during the pandemic). It brings hundreds of elementary and middle school students and their families together with their high school counterparts and NHS staff along with dozens of visitors from community groups and businesses to explore all aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. The students enjoyed a variety of activities, labs and crafts and had the opportunity to check out some of the science and technology resources that they will be able to enjoy when they get to the high school in a few years. The youngest visitors enjoyed activities in an extensive, immersive outer space-themed hallway and classroom decorated by students in the Family and Consumer Science Preschool Lab program.

Students take LEgo robots for an AI test drive
In April, a group of seventh-grade students from Maple Point MS had the opportunity to build and test-drive programmable LEGO robot kits that will be implemented next year as part of the middle school technology education program. These kits are one of many additions to the curriculum as the Pennsylvania STEELS standards are integrated into the technology and science program.
In the exercise, the students had ten minutes to build the miniature robots in two groups. They then programmed the robots to perform various maneuvers using color-coded cards, which were identified by the robots using a miniature camera. This particular resource will be used by students in the eighth grade, which means that these students will see the robots again in their technology education classes next year.
Neshaminy music community recognized
For the tenth time, the Neshaminy music program and community have been named one of the best in the country by the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Foundation. According to the foundation, the program spotlights and celebrates school districts and individual schools across the United States "for their exemplary dedication to music education and their ongoing efforts to ensure equitable access to music learning as part of a well-rounded education."
Recipients of the 2026 BCME Awards were selected through a comprehensive application and review process that evaluates key indicators, including funding, instructional time, participation rates, facilities and community support.
"Being recognized for the tenth time speaks to the long-standing tradition of excellence in our music program," said Neshaminy lead music teacher Alexis Cassidy. "Itβs built on years of dedication from our educators and the joy and commitment our students bring to making music every day."

School Board Update
RESOLUTION HELPS VICTIMS OF TAX FRAUD
At the April 14 meeting, the School Board unanimously approved a resolution that allows the Bucks County Tax Claim Bureau and district administrators to waive fees, penalties and interest for property owners "in limited circumstances" who are delinquent in their property tax payements due to verified cases of tax fraud against them. Such a waiver would be determined on a case-by-case basis.
BUSINESS OPERATIONS COMMITTEE: 2026-2027 budget, district growth and more
The committee met on Wednesday, April 15. The major topics of the night were the 2026-2027 budget process, facilities proposals based on a new demographic study, discussion of Aramark, the district's food service provider and property tax collections.
The district continues to make steady progress in maintaining a strong financial position while planning for future needs. During the meeting, officials shared that revenues and expenditures remain largely on track, with spending slightly higher than last year due to timing and planned commitments.
The overall budget picture has improved significantly, with the projected deficit reduced through careful adjustments. However, ongoing financial pressures remainβparticularly in special education, where costs are both significant and difficult to predict. District leaders emphasized the importance of continued monitoring to ensure long-term stability. The final budget proposal is scheduled to be published in May with final School Board approval scheduled for June.
A key highlight of the meeting was a detailed facilities presentation by Schradergroup, a Philadelphia architectural and engineering firm, focused on future enrollment growth and building capacity. While elementary and middle schools currently have enough space across the district, the high school is expected to face capacity challenges within the next several years. Projections show the need for approximately 14β16 additional classrooms by 2029. To address this, two conceptual expansion options were introduced: a comprehensive plan that includes new athletic and dining facilities, and a more targeted, cost-conscious approach centered on classroom additions and expanded cafeteria space. Both options underscore the need for timely decision-making, as planning and design would need to begin soon to meet anticipated demand.
The meeting also covered several important operational updates. The district completed a competitive bidding process for its food service program, ultimately selecting Aramark to continue providing services, with noted improvements in leadership and food offerings.
Upcoming Meetings
The next full Board meeting will be the Public Work Session held on Tuesday, May 12 at 7 pm. The May Board Public Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 28 at 7 pm. All meetings are held in the District Board Room at Maple Point. The meeting video livestream, agenda and archive video of past meetings can be found at www.neshaminy.org/meetings.

Elementary running clubs promote healthy lifestyle choices
Students in the after-school Running Club at Walter Miller ES start each meeting with a character-building activity, then warm-ups, then laps.
The Girls on the Run Club at Albert Schweitzer ES is about much more than running. It involves team-building, self-esteem, choice-making, empowerment, and friendship skills.
Core Creek ES had so many students interested in their after-school running club that they have two groups that meet on different days.
schweitzer pep rally promotes reading, test prep
Albert Schweitzer ES brought energy and excitement to their recent PSSA Pep Rally on Friday, April 17 with a surprise staff flash mob that had students on their feet! Prior to the performance, students reviewed important test-taking strategies to help them feel confident and played βAre You Smarter than a Third Grader?β and βAre You Smarter than a Fourth Grader?β with their teachers.
The celebration continued as third and fourth grade students were cheered on by staff lining the aisles, building confidence and school spirit. Then came the big surpriseβDr. Orlando, along with 23 staff members, took center stage, joining in on a popular TikTok dance trend set to Bruno Marsβs βI Just Might.β The unexpected performance sparked cheers and smiles across the crowd, creating a truly memorable moment. The rally concluded with a burst of streamers, sending students off feeling motivated, supported, and ready to do their best!
During the rally, the Schweitzer staff proudly unveiled their brand-new Book Nookβan eye-catching vending machine filled with books. This innovative addition is designed to celebrate and reward students for demonstrating our CARES values in meaningful ways.
Students can earn a coveted golden coin for the Book Nook by being selected as a monthly Mystery Motivator or by being βcaughtβ going above and beyond in areas such as grit, perseverance, and demonstrating CARES behaviors. (Cooperation, Positive Attitude, Respect, Empathy, and Safety.) These moments of excellence now come with an extra special rewardβchoosing a book to keep and enjoy at home. The first recipients got to try out the new machine on stage.
tawanka caps autism acceptance week with a donation, Eagles visitor
On the morning of Friday, April 17, Tawanka Elementary School celebrated the final day of the school's Autism Acceptance Week with a $1,000 check presentation to the Puzzle Pieces Squared non-profit; a local group focused on autism advocacy and support for parents and guardians. The school raised the money by selling t-shirts, which many of the students wore to school for the day. The staff and students were also treated to a special appearance by Swoop from the Philadelphia Eagles courtesy of the We Dance Together Foundation during two assemblies (for different grades).
As part of the acceptance efforts, Tawanka Speech Pathologist, Ms. Cassandra Weber, and Autistic Support Teacher, Mrs. Michelle McFadden, created an interactive bulletin board to celebrate Autism Acceptance Month this April. The board is designed to look like an iPad / Augmentative and Alternative Communication Device with the application TouchChat. The two created a script for teachers to use with their classrooms to describe different types of devices and practicing using the interactive AAC device. Students can create sentences such as "I need help,β βI feel happy,β and βI like to play,β just to name a few.
With the growing number of students with disabilities and students using different types of devices, Ms. Weber and Mrs. McFadden thought it was important for students to understand the use of AAC devices or talkers and see what it may be like to use one, especially during this month.
Mrs. Mannherzβ Kindergarten class and Ms. Kotsopoulosβ first grade class took a trip down to Mrs. McFaddenβs classroom to see where their peers learn and spend their time when not participating in inclusion opportunities. The students were able to ask their peers questions about the classroom, schedule, and their favorites between the two classrooms along with exploring some of the studentsβ favorite sensory toys and tactile bins. Both the students in Mrs. McFaddenβs class and inclusion classrooms loved the opportunity to see their classmates' other room and what their everyday looks like.
Hoover chess club wraps up another season
The Herbert Hoover ES Chess Club held their final tournament of the year in mid-April. The club met weekly for students who wanted to learn the game or who already had experience and wanted to sharpen their skills.
Cockroaches in our buildings? Don't worry, it's for science
Could you hack this? Students in Lorraine Takacs' third-grade class at Core Creek ES are studying the structures, functions, and needs of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches as part of their science program. They took the "hands-on" approach to science to a whole new level!
Ferderbar celebrates March Madness of Books
Joseph Ferderbar ES wrapped up their March Madness: Tournament of Books in early April and reported that it was a huge success! Students and staff listened to each of the 16 books and voted throughout the month of March for their favorite. The book that won the tournament was "Piece Out," written by Alex Willan. Throughout the tournament, random students were selected to receive a free book. At the conclusion of the tournament, students celebrated with a Pajama Day and selected a free book to enjoy.
Hoover Second grade visits Middletown Township Building
Herbert Hoover ES second-graders enjoyed a fun and educational trip to the Middletown Township municipal complex on Friday, April 10 to learn about all the different aspects of local government.
Sandburg spirit supports animal shelter
The SPIRIT Club at Carl Sandburg MS recently organized a successful drive to support the Women's Humane Society. Students promoted the effort throughout the school, encouraging donations of much-needed pet supplies such as food, blankets, and toys. Thanks to their enthusiasm and the generosity of the school community, the collection made a meaningful impact in helping care for animals in need.

Poquessing prepares for the World Cup with a block party
On Wednesday, April 15, Poquessing MS students enjoyed celebrating Spring at the World Cup Block Party! Aside from competing in some fun games and cornhole, students enjoyed some delicious water ice from Richmanβs Ice Cream and a visit from Phang, the mascot of the Philadelphia Union.
Student art is for the dogs (and cats)
6th grade students at Poquessing explored and discussed artists who use their work to bring awareness to social issues and create change in their communities. Our project focused on the need for animal adoption and the benefits of adopting, rather than buying from breeders. Students created oil pastel portraits of adoptable pets from Women's Animal Shelter and Bucks County SPCA.
Rock, Paper, Scissors gets serious
Carl Sandburg recently brought the excitement of March Madness to life with their very own Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament. Students began by competing within their homerooms, then advanced to face off against other homeroom champions until grade-level winners were crowned. At the same time, staff members battled it out in their own bracket for ultimate bragging rights. The energy peaked at the end of the tournament week when both student and staff Final Fours and Championship rounds took place in the auditorium. The event culminated in an epic showdownβstudent vs. staff!
March Math Madness at Poquessing
Mr. Karras and Mr. Canimore's math classes at Poquessing Middle School participated in a tournament inspired by March Madness, where they competed in teams by completing ALEKS topics. Each student worked individually to earn βpointsβ for their team, contributing to their overall success.
Throughout the competition, students completed topics weekly, strengthening their math skills and working to close gaps in areas they had not yet mastered. Their effort, consistency, and teamwork were on full display. Congratulations to LSU for coming out on top, and great work to all students who participated in making this a fun and meaningful learning experience!
March Math Madness at Maple Point
The 8th grade math classes at Maple Point held a βMath Madnessβ competition recently to see which teams could complete the most ALEKS topics over the same 4-week period as the NCAA βMarch Madnessβ basketball tournament. During the competition more than 10,000 combined ALEKS math topics were completed by the 8th graders. The studentsβ goal was to win a Pizza Party while the teacherβs driving force was for all of them to learn as much math as possible leading up to the PSSA. Each week half of the field was eliminated during the bracket play tournament with only 1 team left standing in the end for each teacherβs class. Those winning teams were celebrated this past Monday with a Pizza Party during their WIN period.

NHS Choir members visit the southwest
Eighty members of the Neshaminy choir embarked on a trip to Arizona from April 9 through April 14. The students had the opportunity to perform and have a clinic at Arizona State University with Choir Professor Dr. Frank Watkins. They also visited several music-oriented attractions including the Hadestown National Tour at the Mesa Arts Center, heard the Phoenix Symphony play the Marvel Studios Infinity Saga Concert, visited the Musical Instrument Museum and Organ Stop Pizza, home of the world's largest theater pipe organ (seriously, it's in a pizza restaurant!).
