Greetings Hughes Families!

What a wonderful first week at Hughes! It has been so exciting to see our hallways filled with smiling faces, eager learners, and the energy that comes with a brand-new school year!

Our students have done an amazing job learning routines, making new friends, and settling into their classrooms. Our teachers and staff have worked incredibly hard to create welcoming, engaging classrooms where every child feels known, valued, and ready to learn.

I am so grateful for the partnership of our families as we begin another incredible year together.

IMPORTANT: Please read the safety update from Officer Williams below. We have some major safety concerns and we want to start the year off safely!

Also, do not forget to follow us on Facebook to get all the #Hughes Hype videos and information!

Attendance Changes for 2026-2027-Reminder:

  • Doctor’s notes or other supporting documentation for an absence, may be submitted by completing the online Attendance Note Submission form and uploading your documentation within the form. Student's 8-digit ID numbers are required in order to complete the form, and may be found in Skyward Family Access. This process applies to both full-day and partial-day absences. Please note that a parent notification submitted through Skyward Family Access regarding a doctor's visit does not qualify as a doctor's note.

  • Skyward Absence Request

  • Attendance Note Submission

Item Drop Offs:

  • We have a drop off area in the front foyer of the school and there are baskets with each grade level marked. If you need to drop something off, you will fill out a ticket and place it with the item and our front office staff with take it to them.**Items MUST be dropped by 10:00 a.m.
  • The office staff will not accept any items after 10:00 a.m. Your child will get what they need, we have water, your child can get a lunch in the cafeteria, so not to worry!
  • Please do not drop off hot lunches everyday. Dropping off lunches becomes a huge problem for our teachers and staff and is a safety concern for our students if they have to come up to the office to retrieve a lunch. I truly appreciate everyone's help with this.

Transporation Changes and Picking Up Early:

  • In the event you have a transportation change, please call the front office at 945-678-2600 prior to 1:30 pm. Please do not email your teacher due to there not being a guarantee they will get the message in time.

  • Picking up for an appointment? We will not be able to check students out after 2:30 p.m. (From 2:30-3:00 everyday ALL students participate in WIN time (what I need time) where students are moving around the building and not always in their homeroom class. This makes it very difficult to check out students. Please be here at Hughes before 2:30 p.m. to pick up early. Thank you!

Arrival and Dismissal at Hughes:

To help us, please remember to:

* Have your car tag hanging from your rearview mirror.

* Make sure nothing is covering your car tag, like air fresheners or other items hanging from your rearview mirror.

* Bring this year's car tag. Old tags won't be accepted.

* If you forget your car tag, you'll need to park and go to the front office with your photo ID to sign out your student. We know this can be inconvenient, but it's a critical safety measure for all our students.

Yearbooks from Last Year!

Did you attend Hughes last year and didn't get a yearbook? We have about 20 leftover and would love for you to have one. Yearbooks will be $20 cash ONLY. Call the front office for more info! 945-678-2600.

The safety of our students and families is always our top priority. As a reminder, adults should always remain in their vehicles during carline. For the safety and efficiency of everyone, please do not park and walk your child to the building.

If your child needs assistance getting buckled, you may pull forward to the designated fire hydrant area in the front carline to safely buckle your child. This helps our carline to continue safely. Getting out of your car not only delays the flow of carline but also puts the adult getting out of the car in an unsafe position. We appreciate your help with this.

If you are walking to pick up your child on either the gym or art walker sides of the buidling DO NOT just walk across the parking lot. PLEASE used sidewalks and designated crosswalks in the front of the school, on Prestwick Dr. or near the Art Walker area. This is also AFTER you pick your child up. These crosswalks are monitored and provide the safest way to cross campus. We have carlines moving around 3:05-3:10 p.m. and it is extremely dangerous to walk or bike through the parking lots, especially on the Art Walker side.

Please encourage your older child(ren) as well to always use the crosswalks and not walk or ride their bike in the parking lots- again this is very dangerous!

Thank you for helping us keep our students, families, and staff safe and for following these procedures each day. When we all follow the same safety routines, carline runs more smoothly and, most importantly, safely!

Welcome to a brand-new school year! This month, I’m jumping into classrooms to kick off our guidance lessons with a special introduction. Think of me as your child’s school "cheerleader" and go-to problem solver! We’ll be talking all about building a strong support team, smoothly tackling back-to-school transitions, and learning that asking for help is a true superpower. Ask your student this week who is in their school support system!

Love, Ms. Ward
