FSDB Parent/ Family Climate Survey

Hello parents and families!

As I shared last month in your child’s school newsletter, it is time for our Spring FSDB Parent/Family Climate Survey! Please take time to fill out the survey before Friday, May 19th. We want to know how we can do things better and what we should celebrate. The educational experience we provide to our students will continue to grow and thrive with your help and partnership. We are excited to hear from!

Sincerely,

Tracie C. Snow
FSDB President

Tens Board

Nastia has completed the Tens Board. This work introduces her to the names for the tens quantities: “twenty”, “thirty”, “forty”…”ninety” etc. It also helps her to realize how the numbers progress from one ten to the next. Next steps will be to connect name, quantity, and symbol for the numbers 11-99

Pouring Water

Reuben is pouring water. Pouring is a foundational activity in the Montessori classroom. It not only builds independence, but also the careful precision required to succeed at a pouring task and helps the children to develop self control using slow, purposeful movement. This activity also refines hand-eye and fine motor coordination. Because young children are highly motivated to repeat their activities, Reuben has multiple opportunities to practice concentration as he pours liquids and dry materials.

Knobbed Cylinders

Ethan, Violet and Ava are working together to complete 3 knobbed cylinder blocks. This complicated work includes 30 cylinders that each fit into their corresponding hole. This activity builds visual discrimination of dimensions - the children must notice minute difference in length and diameter. It also indirectly prepares a child for handwriting (see how they are grasping the knobs on the cylinders?) by building and refining fine-motor skills.

Cards and Counters

Elena is learning to identify odd and even numbers using the Cards and Counters work. This is a concrete representation of odd and even numbers. Elena has been taught how to set up counters in two rows, then run fingers through them. Evens have exactly 2 rows and her finger can go "through", odds are uneven and her finger "stops" at the odd counter.

Pink Tower

Rebeka is working to complete the pink tower. The pink tower has ten pink wooden cubes that differ in all three dimensions - width, height and weight. The size of each cube increases progressively from 1 cubic cm through 10 cubic cm. Rebeka mixes them up and then builds them into a tower from the largest to the smallest.

After she is able to consistently build the tower in size order, she will be exposed to sensorial language - small, smaller, smallest, and large, larger, largest. This work helps Rebeka to refine her fine motor skills and helps to prepare her mathematical mind.

Tapping with a mallet

Ellie is tapping pushpins into a corkboard. Hammering involves both fine and gross motor skills - she is required to move her arm while gripping the mallet with her fingers. It also involves visual-spatial processing as she has to look at the item and determine how far she has to move the hammer to hit it.

CHANGES TO THE ELC SNACK AND LUNCH POLICIES

The ELC is now officially a NUT FREE ZONE.

That means - please do not send peanut butter sandwiches, peanut butter cookies, snacks with peanut butter etc. Our policy excludes ALL tree nuts and peanuts - that includes almonds, cashews and walnuts. The cafeteria is aware of this change and is no longer providing the ELC any food or snacks that contain nuts.
