Principal's Corner - September 18, 2026
Happy Friday, Squire Families!
This week, we kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month in true LTE style—with music, celebration, and a wonderful mariachi performance for our Squires! It was such a joyful way to begin a month dedicated to honoring the rich histories, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.
One of the things that makes LTE so special is the incredible culture of our school community. Our Squire Family represents many different backgrounds, languages, traditions, and experiences, and each one adds something important to who we are. We want every child and family who walks through our doors to know they belong here and that their culture is something to be celebrated. That sense of belonging and connection is part of what makes LTE the place to be!
We Want YOU at LTE!
Speaking of connection, one of our campus-wide goals this year is to increase parent engagement, because we know that our families are crucial partners in the success of our students. When families and schools work together, our Squires benefit!
Parent engagement can look different for every family, and there are so many ways to be part of what is happening at LTE. You can volunteer on campus, join your child for lunch, attend a teacher-hosted event, participate in PTA activities, come to a school celebration, or simply stay connected with your child’s teacher and the learning happening in the classroom. Whether you have ten minutes to give or ten hours, we want you to know that you are welcome here, you are an important part of our Squire Family, and your involvement matters.
Community Partners Supporting Our Squires
I also want to give a very special Squire shout-out to Pastor Jason Surdy and Lake Travis United Methodist Church for their incredible generosity and continued support of LTE. This week, they provided classroom snacks for our entire building, helping ensure our Squires are nourished, cared for, and ready to learn. What a wonderful gift to our students and teachers!
Their partnership extends to our families as well. Lake Travis United Methodist Church is offering English classes for families in our community, and you’ll find additional information in the flyer included in this week’s newsletter. We are so grateful for community partners who not only ask how they can help our school, but continually find meaningful ways to support our students and families.
It truly takes all of us—students, staff, families, and community partners—working together to make LTE such a special place to learn and grow. Thank you for continuing to show up for our Squires and for one another. Together, we are building a school community where everyone belongs and every Squire can thrive.
Enjoy the long weekend Squires!
With appreciation,
Amanda Prehn

DISCOVERY/GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM REFERRAL - DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 10/15
Attention LTISD Parents and Guardians,
Discovery, otherwise known as Gifted and Talented, is the enrichment program provided for students who have been identified as intellectually gifted and talented. All students are eligible to be selected for the Discovery program at each campus. In order to be identified as gifted and talented, each student must undergo a screening and selection process. The Discovery Program is now accepting parent referrals for GT Screening via Google form.
Elementary Form - For Grades 1, 3, 4, 5
Second Graders will not need a referral. The entire grade level will be screened in October. More information to come.
Kindergarten students can be referred for GT testing beginning in January 2027. More details will be shared regarding this process at the end of the first semester.
Transfer students, who were already identified as GT coming from their previous district, should submit the Google form as soon as possible, as the transfer student screening will be set within 30 days of the first day of school. Parents should send proof of their child's selection/participation in the previous GT program directly to the campus GT coordinator. (This applies to families that haven’t already been in touch with the GT coordinator.)
Parents can submit referrals for screening by October 15, 2026. Testing will occur during the 2nd 9 weeks of instruction. If the referral and permission forms are not submitted by the deadline, the next opportunity for the student to be screened will be the following academic year. Spring screening is reserved for students moving in new to the district after the fall testing window is closed and for kindergarten students.
The forms, program information and campus coordinator names can be found on the district Gifted and Talented page.
Once the request is submitted through the Google form, the campus GT coordinator will contact parents via email after October 15th to share pertinent information.
You are also welcome to contact your campus GT coordinator at any time with questions.
2nd Grade GT Testing
All 2nd grade students will participate in a brief CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) screener between October 5–16. The CogAT looks at how students think and solve problems rather than what they have learned in class.
The screener includes one section from each of the three CogAT areas: Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal reasoning. Each subtest begins with practice questions so students can become familiar with the format and reasoning tasks before they begin.
No reading is required. Students respond to pictorial questions and answer choices by selecting the circle under the picture that best answers the question. The screener is not timed, and each of the three subtests typically takes about 10–15 minutes to complete.
Results are used to help identify students who may benefit from additional GT/Discovery assessment. This is the first step to determine eligibility for the LTISD Discovery program.
Families who do not want their child to participate may complete the Opt Out form by Friday, October 2, 2026 at 3 pm.
If your child is in special education, direct assessment questions to their case manager.
If you have general questions, please contact your campus Discovery/GT Coordinator.
