Explore Your Future with the ASVAB at NBHS!
At New Brighton High School, we believe in empowering our students to reach their highest potential by exploring a variety of educational and career paths. As part of our commitment to helping students achieve their goals, we are excited to offer the opportunity to take the ASVAB-CEP exam (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery - Career Exploration Program) completely free of charge. These test are offered twice a year and are scheduled for September 16, 2026 and February 3, 2027.
What is the ASVAB-CEP?
The ASVAB-CEP is not just for those considering a military career. While it is true that the United States Military uses the ASVAB to help determine career paths for recruits, the ASVAB-CEP is a powerful tool for all students to identify careers that align with their personal interests and strengths. It's important to note that taking the ASVAB does NOT obligate students to enlist in the Armed Forces. Moreover, New Brighton High School has opted out of automatically sharing student scores with the military, so your child's results will remain confidential unless you choose to share them.
How Does the ASVAB-CEP Work?
The ASVAB-CEP program is a comprehensive career exploration tool that guides students through three key steps:
- ASVAB-CEP Exam: This exam assesses your child's skills and abilities across various domains.
- FYI (Find Your Interests): Using the exam results, FYI helps match your child to careers that fit their interests.
- OccuFind: This final step connects your child's interests and abilities to specific occupations, providing a clear pathway to potential career choices.
- The insights gained from the ASVAB-CEP can be a valuable addition to your child's career portfolio and can assist in meeting state-required graduation pathways.
Why Should Your Child Take the ASVAB-CEP?
- Discover Personal Strengths: Understand where your skills lie and how they can translate into a fulfilling career.
- Explore Career Options: Get matched with occupations that suit your interests and abilities.
- Plan for the Future: Use the results to inform your educational and career planning decisions.

A letter regarding the September ASVAB-CEP will be mailed home at the beginning of the school year to all sophomores, juniors and seniors. If your child is interested in taking the ASVAB-CEP, please complete the form at the bottom of the letter and return it to Mrs. Gentile in the counseling department by Friday, September 12, 2025. The exam will be held on September 24, 2025 at 7:30am in the High School Little Theatre. A separate letter will be mailed home in February for the second ASVAB-CEP test in February.

📚 PSAT/NMSQT – Important Information for Juniors
We are excited to inform you that the PSAT/NMSQT will be held at New Brighton High School on October 21, 2026.
The PSAT provides a valuable opportunity for students to prepare for the SAT, which can play an important role in college admissions and financial aid. It also helps students prepare for eleventh-grade state testing.
🎓 A Pathway to Graduation & Scholarships!
A notable benefit of taking the PSAT is its recognition by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as an “alternate exam” for the state-required Graduation Pathway. Students who earn a 970 or higher may meet Pathway 4 requirements. For more information on Graduation Pathways, visit Graduation Pathways.
The PSAT can also provide an opportunity to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT in October 2026 may be considered for the 2028 National Merit Scholarship Program based on their scores and other eligibility requirements. National Merit recognizes high-achieving students and offers opportunities for several types of scholarships.
🔗 Learn more about the National Merit Scholarship Program:
National Merit Scholarship Corporation
📝 About the PSAT
The PSAT consists of two sections:
Reading & Writing
Math
The exam will take place at school and will last approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
There is no fee for 11th-grade students who wish to take the exam.
📅 How to Sign Up
In August, we mailed a letter about the PSAT to all junior families. If your child is interested in taking the PSAT, please complete the bottom portion of that letter and return it to Mrs. Gentile in the Counseling Department by Thursday, September 17, 2026.
💻 Prepare for the PSAT
Students can prepare for the PSAT by visiting the College Board PSAT/NMSQT website for practice materials and helpful information.
📊 PSAT Scores
In December, students will be able to access their results through the College Board website. Score reports will include the student's answers, the correct answers to each question, and helpful information for improving their scores.
❓ Questions?
For questions regarding the PSAT, please contact our school counselor, Ms. Hubbard, at mhubbard@nbasd.org or 724-846-1050 Ext. 306.
Let's encourage our juniors to take advantage of this opportunity! The PSAT can help students prepare for the SAT, meet a potential graduation pathway requirement, and—depending on their performance—open the door to National Merit Scholarship opportunities. 🦁🎓

September is Suicide Prevention Month: You Are Not Alone
September is Suicide Prevention Month, a crucial time to raise awareness about mental health and the resources available to support those in need. At New Brighton High School, we want every student to know that help is available and you are never alone.
Reach Out for Help:
If you or someone you know is struggling, your first point of contact should be our dedicated staff. They are trained to help and support students in need. Whether it’s a difficult time, feelings of hopelessness, or thoughts of self-harm, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Principal, Mr. Yates, Assistant Principal, Mr. Budacki, your school counselors, Ms. Hubbard or Ms. Young, or our social worker, Ms. Antoline.
Additional Resources:
- National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: Call 988 for 24/7 support. Whether you’re in crisis or just need someone to talk to, trained counselors are available to listen and provide help.
- Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 to connect with a crisis counselor at any time, day or night.
- The Trevor Project: A lifeline for LGBTQ+ youth, offering crisis intervention and suicide prevention services. Visit The Trevor Project or call 1-866-488-7386.
What You Can Do:
- Talk to Someone: Sharing your feelings with a trusted adult can make a significant difference. Don’t keep things bottled up.
- Stay Connected: Maintain connections with friends and family, even when it’s difficult. Social support is a key factor in preventing suicide.
- Know the Signs: Be aware of the warning signs of suicide in yourself or others, such as withdrawing from activities, talking about wanting to die, or experiencing extreme mood swings. If you notice these signs, take them seriously and reach out for help immediately.
Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. At New Brighton High School, we are committed to supporting every student’s mental health and well-being. If you ever feel overwhelmed, please reach out to our school staff—they are here to help.
Selective Service Registration
As part of our ongoing effort to ensure that students are informed about their civic responsibilities, we want to remind all young men of the importance of registering with the Selective Service System. This is a critical step that every young man must take to comply with federal law and maintain eligibility for various benefits and opportunities.
What is the Selective Service System?
The Selective Service System is an independent agency of the United States government that maintains information on those potentially subject to military conscription. While there has not been a draft since 1973, registering with the Selective Service is a requirement for all young men in the United States.
Who Needs to Register?
By law, all male U.S. citizens and male immigrants residing in the U.S. who are 18 through 25 years old are required to register with the Selective Service System.
When to Register
Young men must register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. However, they can pre-register as early as 17 years and 3 months old. Early registration ensures they meet the requirement on time.
How to Register?
Registering with the Selective Service is quick and easy. Here is how you can do it:
- Online: Visit the Selective Service System's official website at www.sss.gov and complete the registration form.
- At the Post Office: Registration forms are available at any U.S. Post Office.
- By Mail: You may receive a Selective Service registration card in the mail, which you can complete and return.
- High School Registration: Many high schools have Selective Service registration forms available, and school officials can assist with the process.
Why is Registration Important?
Registering with the Selective Service is more than a legal obligation; it ensures eligibility for important federal benefits and opportunities, including:
- Federal Student Aid: Registration is required to receive federal financial aid for college.
- Federal Jobs: Eligibility for jobs with the federal government requires Selective Service registration.
- Job Training: Access to federal job training programs is contingent on registration.
Failing to register can result in serious consequences, such as fines, imprisonment, and ineligibility for the benefits listed above.
Stay Informed
For more information on the Selective Service System, including details on how to register and what to do if you miss the registration deadline; visit the official website at www.sss.gov.
Ensuring that young men register with the Selective Service is a vital part of fulfilling their civic duties and maintaining their eligibility for numerous opportunities. We encourage all eligible students and their families to prioritize this important task.
🛡️ Safe2Say Something … Your Voice Can Save a Life
Did you know by Pennsylvania law (Act 44 of 2018) that every school district—public, private, cyber, charter, nonpublic, and vocational—must participate in Safe2Say Something, a program led by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General in partnership with Sandy Hook Promise? The system launched on January 14, 2019 and trains students in grades 6–12 to notice warning signs and speak up—anonymously if necessary—or watch for signs on social media before it’s too late.
What Is It & Why Does It Matter?
Safe2Say Something helps prevent crises by teaching students and school staff how to identify warning signs—like bullying, self-harm, threats, or social isolation—and report them through an anonymous tip system. Remarkably, about 80% of school shooters disclosed their plans to someone first, and 70% of people who died by suicide gave warning signs beforehand.
You don’t need to know details or a name—just enough to get help. The system is completely confidential, and your identity remains protected unless you choose otherwise.
How It Works: Three Easy Ways to Report 🚨
Call the Safe2Say Tip Line at 1‑844‑SAF2SAY (1‑844‑723‑2729)
Visit the website: www.safe2saypa.org
Use the mobile app, available in both the iOS App Store and Android Google Play
Once you submit a tip:
It goes to the PA Office of Attorney General’s 24/7 Crisis Center.
Analysts vet and triage your report, then may ask questions via an anonymous chat to gather more context.
The tip is forwarded immediately to your school—and if urgent, to local law enforcement—for timely intervention.
Your school then closes the case and logs actions taken for follow-up.
When Should You Report?
If something makes you uncomfortable, feels wrong, or involves:
Bullying or threats
Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
Social media posts or rumors about violence
Someone you think might hurt themselves or others
Then say something. Trust your instincts—if it feels concerning, you should report it.
A Voice That Helps Save Lives
Since the system launch, students and staff have submitted tens of thousands of tips from across Pennsylvania. Schools take every tip seriously—and act responsibly to help—often before a crisis escalates.
What Now?
Familiarize yourself with the program and encourage your classmates to join the training.
If you haven’t downloaded the app or checked out the website, do it today!
Remember: it’s not snitching, it's caring.
You can help keep our school safer. You can help save a life—and all it takes is reporting what you see, feel, or read.

FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION
FAFSA Completion Night for Seniors – November 20th
New Brighton High School is pleased to host a FAFSA Completion Night on Tuesday, October 20, 5:00–6:30 PM, in the High School Library. This event is offered free of charge to NBHS seniors and their parents or guardians.
During the evening, families will have the opportunity to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) with guided, hands-on support from school staff and financial aid experts. We strongly encourage students to attend with their families—since the student’s involvement is essential to the process. Parents/guardians are asked to enter through the High School’s main entrance.
What You Should Know: FAFSA Launch News
Recently, the U.S. Department of Education announced that the 2027–28 FAFSA form is now available, marking the earliest launch ever in the program’s history.
Key improvements highlighted in the announcement include:
A streamlined contributor invitation process, allowing students to send a code to parents/contributors to complete their portion more easily
Faster account verification to reduce delays for students and parents
Design updates and enhanced performance to improve user experience
With this earlier availability, students and families have more time to complete the form, correct errors, and meet any deadlines set by colleges or aid programs.
Why This Evening Matters
Completing the FAFSA early can speed up access to grants, federal student loans, and work-study funds.
Expert help will be available to walk you through each section, answer questions, and check that everything is correctly submitted.
We’ll connect families with trusted resources to support future steps in the financial aid and college planning process.
For more information and to explore FAFSA resources in advance, please visit:
FAFSA Support
We hope to see all our seniors and their parents/guardians on October 20th. Let’s work together to ensure every family can take full advantage of financial aid opportunities.
A Valuable FAFSA Resource: PHEAA Financial Aid Webinars
As senior families begin the important journey of applying for financial aid, our school recommends exploring the free Financial Aid Webinars offered by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA). These webinars provide a detailed, step‑by‑step walkthrough of the FAFSA process—including how to create a StudentAid.gov account, use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, and file the PA State Grant form—making the entire experience much more manageable for students and parents alike.
PHEAA schedules multiple sessions throughout the year that cover key topics such as 2026‑27 FAFSA guidance, searching for scholarships, and Financial Aid 101 fundamentals. These presentations are led by knowledgeable Access Partners, offer live Q&A opportunities, and are available to all Pennsylvania families at no cost.
To register or to find the latest schedule, families can visit the official Financial Aid Webinars section on the PHEAA website (PHEAA). Attending one of these webinars is a smart way to prepare before filing, helping to ensure all required documentation is ready and common questions are answered in advance.
We encourage every family to take advantage of these webinars as a valuable supplement to our upcoming in‑person FAFSA Night. Taking proactive steps now can relieve stress and unlock more funding opportunities for your student’s post‑secondary plans.
