Mind, Body & Recess: Fall Tick Safety

Chilly mornings and warmer afternoon temperatures mean ticks are still active, making this transitional weather a prime time for unwanted hitchhikers. Please remember to continue performing daily tick checks on your child, especially around the hairline, behind ears, under arms, and behind knees. Enjoy your weekend!

Be well,

First Friends (1) Fun with Mrs. Trish

The last two weeks, First Friends 1 classroom has been busy learning about how different animals get ready for winter. We sing 'Oh Fall is Here' and use animal signs. We compared squirrels to chipmunks and talked about similarities and differences. We are making the decoration for the tables for the Harvest Dinner next month. The Harris Center naturalist came and taught us many things about bats. We knew a few facts already and have been reading and learned a rhyme about bats. With our bat puppets, we pretended to be bats flying at night, eating insects, sleeping in our cave during the day, and hibernating all winter. We have learned about other nocturnal animals. Our dramatic play area is an animal rescue and we are taking care of the animals. We have many wild NH animals in our shelter.

The afternoon group loves enrichment games and trying new things. We talk about the green( happy), blue(sad) and red(angry) zones and share some of our feelings. We are learning the sounds that letters make and which things in our world begin with those sounds. We talked about nutrition and play a BINGO game that reminds us to eat healthy foods.

First Friends (2) Fun with Mrs. Colleen

First Friends 2 has been busy exploring all things fall! We have been learning about leaves and pumpkins while working hard on recognizing shapes. The children used their creativity to make pictures using different shapes and designed pumpkin faces with a variety of shapes. It was so much fun to see their imaginations at work!

At circle time, we learned two new songs, “Pass the Pumpkin” and “Pumpkin Chant,” which have quickly become favorites! Movement time has been filled with lots of dancing and fun as we enjoy Halloween songs by Danny Go and Jack Hartmann. We are also continuing to practice counting all the way to 20. This week, we created two graphs using our names to explore and count how many friends have different eye and hair colors.

Our afternoon students have been busy learning numbers 1–3 and the letters C, O, A, D, and this week’s new letter, G! They have also started working on segmenting and blending words through our Heggerty activities. We continue to practice rhyming and recognizing patterns, too.

Another exciting step this week was beginning to write our names, moving beyond writing just our first initial. The students are working hard to form their letters correctly, and we are so proud of their efforts!

The weather has been chilly but beautiful, giving us plenty of opportunities to enjoy the changing season. We are loving all the fall fun and learning happening in First Friends 2! 🎃 🍁

Kind Kindergarteners!

Kindergarten was so excited to begin learning letters this week! So far the kindergarteners have been introduced to a, m, and t. We have been practicing identifying these letters by the sound they make and listening to hear these sounds in words. We also used mirrors to look at how our mouths are moving while we make these sounds. In our previous skills unit, learning different writing strokes was a primary focus. The kindergarteners have done such a wonderful job applying what they learned about writing strokes to help them write the letters a, m and t.

Kindergarten finished our Knowledge unit about the five senses with a few extra activities, like an apple exploration, and next week we will revisit when to carve our pumpkins. This week we started our unit on stories called Underdogs and Heros. We have already read 3 familiar stories, Chicken Little, The 3 Little Pigs, and The Billy Goats Gruff. We will read different versions of these stories throughout the unit. In math, we have been working with numbers 1-10, connecting quantities to numerals and practicing writing our numbers, remembering that numbers always start at the top when writing. Our social studies time has been spent learning about Community Helpers. It was so fun that Fire Chief Babb opened up the firehouse for us to take a tour and get to crawl around in the different vehicles.

Fabulous First Grade!

Happy Friday! It has been a busy few weeks in first grade. We finished our knowledge unit learning about the human body, and began our new unit on fairy tales from around the world. So far we have listened to three versions of Cinderella! We also finished our first skills unit and started our new unit. The first graders were excited to see our new phonics reader which tells the tales of Gran and her travels. We are continuing our science unit exploring the sun, moon and stars and have been focusing on learning more about how the sun appears to move in the sky. In social studies we have been exploring different strategies and tools that can be helpful when we are feeling strong feelings. We learned a song called, Let It Go, that highlights some of the strategies we learned about. We sang the song at our whole school community meeting today! Great job first grade!

First grade has been continuing their work with story problems. We are working to create pictures and equations to help solve problems and figure out the difference. For example if someone has 4 squares and 8 triangles, how many more triangles do they have then squares. Two equations can be made to solve this problem 4+_____=8 or 8-4=______ .

Have a great weekend,

~Ms. Harrington & Mrs. Hodgen

Second Grade Stars!

It has been another great couple of weeks in 2nd grade. In literacy, we wrapped up Skills unit 1 in CKLA by taking our assessment. We also wrapped up our knowledge unit 2 about Ancient Greece. The students wrote an opinion of Alexander the Great. Their opinion writing included a topic sentence, opinion sentence, and a sentence that gave a reason for their opinion. We also started to learn about vowel teams this week. Students were introduced to the ee, ea, and e_e spelling patterns. We have also been focusing on contractions and quotation marks. In math, we have been working on regrouping tens when needed for subtracting within 100. We have been building with base ten blocks and drawing diagrams. We are also using our regrouping skills within word problems. In social studies, we have been learning about map skills. We have been using map keys and compass roses. We also learned about the differences between a map and a globe.

We also had our last week of gardening. The students made a salad from the garden and planted garlic.

Terrific Third Grade!

3rd graders have wrapped up both Unit 1 in Literacy and Unit 1 in Math this week. In Literacy, Students completed their first writing assignment about a character that demonstrated a particular theme throughout Wind in the Willows. They did a really wonderful job following the writing format; revising, and editing and publishing their pieces with a personalized piece of art. In Math we wrapped up the Unit with the discussion of commutative property of multiplication in the context of arrays. Students did very well on their end of unit assessments!

Moving into Unit 2 in Literacy; Fur, Fins, and Feathers: Animal Classified. We started with a virtual field trip to the Smithsonian National Zoo, where students practiced the skills of being a zoologist. They made observations of animal behavior, and discussed what they knew and what they noticed. It was a lot of fun to watch the Cheetah mother and her cubs, which were born on October 5th. In Math Unit 2 we looked at the area of a figure and how the space can be measured using inch tiles. Some students are able to see the array model in a figure and use that knowledge to solve for the area in square units.

3rd grade started our cursive curriculum this week by exploring the declaration of independence and what the name John Hancock is so important in modern day society. Students really enjoyed our first lesson writing lowercase letters. For our second step lesson this week we continued the conversation of how our brains make stronger pathways the more we practice skills. I challenged the class to practice writing their names with their opposite hand for the next week to see if it gets easier!

We had a very exciting week as we welcomed Sunshine and Lava, our baby painted turtles that we will be fostering throughout the school year, before their release back into the wild in Spring. Students will be responsible for monthly measuring, weighing along with feeding and cleaning their tanks.

Fantastic Fourth Graders!

In fourth grade, we have had a busy and productive two weeks of learning across all subject areas! We remain committed to growing together as a supportive classroom community:

  • We are taking a deep dive into what respect actively looks like and feels like in our classroom.

  • We learned about the logical and emotional centers of the brain to help understand reactions and self-regulation.

  • We are continually reflecting on how to put ourselves in the best possible "spot for learning" each day.

Math Students completed Unit 2, where they practiced generating and reasoning about equivalent fractions, as well as comparing and ordering fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100. In our upcoming math unit, we will begin extending mathematical operations to fractions.

Literacy (Medieval Knights and Castle Life: Europe's Middle Ages) We kicked off our second literacy unit on the Middle Ages and have already covered a lot of exciting ground! Students worked with a timeline spanning BCE and CE to accurately place key historical events. Through our first five chapters, students have contrasted the daily lives of lords and serfs, discovered the steps to becoming a knight, learned the primary purpose of castles, and explored how medieval towns developed over time.

We have also started our informational writing by drafting paragraphs about lords and serfs using organized notes from our readings. Our language skills focus was on the functions of nouns and adjectives, exploring the prefixes un- and non-, and learning how to form and apply prepositional phrases in our writing.

Science Our scientific exploration continues in the Fates of Traits unit! Students explored how variation in the toe scales of green lizards gives certain individuals an advantage when climbing and surviving. We connected this activity directly to the process of natural selection in the wild.

Reminder Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up. If you haven't already done so and would like to schedule a conference, please reach out to me!

The Week in Wellness

Students in grades 3 and 4 completed Fitnessgram challenges this week. These challenges include the PACER 15 meter run (an aerobic capacity challenge that speeds up progressively), curl-up and plank. All students really challenged themselves and encouraged each other to do their best. We discussed the importance of fitness not only for sports but for daily activities. They then set goals for the next assessment. Additionally, we played battleship, pirates of the Caribbean, ghostbusters, Halloween tag, and stinky feet.

Students in grades K-2 worked on various animal movements in shared space, underhand roll, underhand toss, and overhand throw. We revisited the importance of washing hands to prevent germs from spreading and played germ tag (lots of glitter). Finally, we played Halloween games and did a Halloween Freeze Dance.

Thank you for encouraging healthy choices,

~ Mrs. Parker
