Message from the Principal
Happy Monday Kellogg Community.
This past Friday we celebrated Autism Awareness Month with a pep assembly in our gym. The assembly put forth students and staff with Autism. We had a lecture, a speaker of truth, a musical performance, a unity game and more. We also had clubs to wrap up our last Friday of the month of April. Students who did not attend a club they were interested in can fill out the club change interest form provided later in this newsletter.
This week Kellogg is hosting our rising 6th grade trip. On Tuesday, April 28th we will host Arleta & Lent and then on Thursday, April 30th we will host Marysville & Atkinson. Students are bussed to Kellogg from their school. The event lasts from about 9:30-11:00 am and includes a quick pep assembly, a student panel and Q&A, and a tour of the school with our WEB Leaders.
This Wednesday, April 29th we will host our Spring Picnic from 5:00-7:00 pm here at Kellogg. This fun event is a come as you are with a blanket, some food and maybe a little cash if you want to contribute to the baking games our leadership students will be playing with our crowd. If you are a baker and want to donate a baked good, you can sign up for the event below.
There will be no school on Friday. This Friday, May 1st is a Portland Public Schools mandated furlough day.
Our Multicultural Fair evening is May 27th from 6:00-7:30 pm. We welcome all families to this event. The Multicultural Fair information can be found below.
Promotion and the annual Oaks Park field trip for our 8th graders will be on June 4th.
As I shared in the last couple of newsletters, we are working with students to ensure they get to class on time. This effort is one of our positive behavior support systems to help students learn a life lesson about being on time. If a student is late to class they will be given a warning, after a couple of warnings the student will get a lunch reflection (lunch detention) and a call home to inform their parent.
Our year to date attendance is steady at about 90%, and our attendance for the prior five fell to about 88%. We have about 65% of our students achieving regular-acceptable attendance and about 24% of our students experiencing chronic absenteeism. Our School Improvement Goal of 68%.
This is a reminder that the Oregon Statewide Summative Assessment in ELA and Math are coming soon (Annual Notice). We are organizing our teams of teachers in preparation for these exams. Our tentative week of assessment is May 11-15 for ELA and Math.
As we look forward through this week we have included some news and resources. In this edition of the Kellogg Community News, please find the following big topics:

Message from the Nurse's Office
We're in the home stretch before summer. Let's finish strong! A few friendly reminders to help keep everyone healthy:
Wash hands regularly
Drink plenty of water and aim for 7-8 hrs of restful sleep
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Clean high-touch surfaces such as door handles, kitchen tables, light switches, and tablets/phones
Kind Regards,
Nurse Jenny Hefele
Club Change Interest Form
We have one more club day on May 29!
If your student is interested in changing their club, please have them complete this form by May 22 using their PPS email address. This form has also been emailed to them directly at their PPS email address.
Only clubs that aren't full are eligible to be moved into, but this form will also ask for their interest in clubs that are full in case any of them open up. Club change requests submitted after May 22 will not be eligible for consideration.
Completing this form does not guarantee a switch. Club assignments will be released in the cafeteria on the next club day, May 29.
Multicultural Fair
We are excited to announce the launch of what we hope will become an annual Kellogg Community Multicultural Fair, taking place May 27 at 6pm. This event is designed to bring together students, families, community members, and local partners for an evening of cultural celebration and connection.
The Multicultural Fair will be a culminating community event where our school community gathers under one roof to share and celebrate the many cultures represented at Kellogg. The evening will include community partners sharing information about summer and fall opportunities for students and families, cultural affinity groups in our cafeteria sharing food, games, and artifacts; performances on our stage; and displays throughout the building where students and community members can share reflections on “What culture means to me.”
We would love for members of our community to participate in one or more of the following ways:
- Host a cultural table in the cafeteria, which might include sharing traditional food, games, artifacts, or stories with visitors.
- Share a performance such as dance, music, storytelling, or a short cultural presentation.
- Contribute food to our free community banquet featuring small, bite-sized cultural dishes to share.
This event will fill our building with community members who come together to celebrate culture, music, dance, food, and fellowship during this special two-hour gathering.
If you are interested in participating in this community-centered event, please see this link for more information on how to get involved. If you would like to attend, please see the flyer below for more information. We look forward to celebrating and sharing this space with you.
The ROAR Store
The ROAR Store has moved to its new location with new and improved items and lots of student excitement. The store is now being managed by Student Council. Please encourage your student to ask for ROAR tickets (our currency). Students earn ROAR tickets by upholding our ROAR values here at Kellogg. Our ROAR values are all about getting our students to operate in a respectful way, by being open-minded, by being their authentic self and by being a responsible citizen.
The Store is open Wednesday and Friday during lunch times with new and improved items for students to select from, including big ticket items that are more about an experience than a trinket they can lose. We are excited to get students reactions to the new items available at our new grand opening.
Counselors' Corner
7th Grade: Jeanette Scantling: jscantling@pps.net
8th grade: Holly Vaughn-Edmonds: hvedmonds@pps.net
6th Grade Update
Students will be exploring what makes them unique and develop a deeper understanding of their own Identity through classroom lessons and conversation with peers.
7th Grade News
Students took part in a counseling lesson addressing behaviors that are coming up at Kellogg. The lesson provided students the opportunity to reflect on issues that are coming up at Kellogg through an antibullying lens.
8th Grade News
This past week, high schoolers from Franklin, Benson, and David Douglas (prior Kellogg students) spoke to our 8th graders about the social/emotional transition to high school. Here were some nuggets of sound advice:
Freshman year is not overwhelming academically. Teachers know that there’s a lot to balance in high school, and work you in slowly. However, not doing your work and getting lower grades affect your GPA and it can take time to get the GPA up when you’re looking at college and post high school opportunities.
Don’t skip class/miss a lot of class! If you fail a core class, you’ll be making it up in the summer.
The structure of the freshmen communities makes it easy to see the same students in certain classes. Talk to new people – don’t be afraid. They’re nervous too.
Go to tutorial to get your work done and get to know your teachers. Get comfortable emailing them.
Get involved! Join a club, a sport, or get involved in the arts.
Ms. Holly is looking for volunteer parents/community members for the final guidance activity next month. It’ll be a super fun interactive activity in English classes talking to adults from many different career pathways. Please reach out if you’re interested, or have friends/family that are!

School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder)
The safety of our students and staff are our first priority! If a school official is directing traffic, please pay close attention to their instructions. Parents should not enter into the school parking lot from 9:00-9:20 am and from 3:45-4:10. Thank you for your attention to safety on our campus.
The Kellogg School traffic circulation maps outline the planned flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around our campus during drop-off, pick-up, and other times when school-related traffic is high. The map is designed to help parents, students, school staff, and drivers understand the most efficient and safe routes for entering, exiting, and navigating within the school premises.
Our circulation maps also include nearby Park and Walk locations. These are sites near the school where families can park or students can be dropped off and walk the remainder of the distance to the school site, reducing car traffic in front of the school and allowing you to skip waiting in the drop-off line while students start the day with healthy physical activity, arriving at school more ready to learn. Some Park and Walk locations are at nearby parks, while others encourage families to use on-street parking within the school neighborhood.
Please utilize Park and Walk locations and avoid dropping off and picking up students at the front of the school along 69th Avenue or in the parking lot.

Grades and ParentVue
If you are uncertain about how to check on your student's grades, missing work and or class work progress, here is a quick how to resource that might be able to help.
Safe Oregon
We are grateful that the PPS school community is using the SafeOregon tip line to report incidents that affect students' well-being and ability to learn in a safe environment. Just last year, there were over 300 tips that were submitted anonymously. We are responsible for keeping SafeOregon's contact information for our buildings accurate at all times so that school leaders can be alerted promptly. Please remember to reach out to Andrew Gerlach (agerlach@pps.net) whenever there is a staffing change to building leadership. Please save the SafeOregon number in your phone: 844-472-3367 This will allow you to identify their number when they need to call you if an urgent tip has been submitted in connection to your school.

Schoolwide Expectations
At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.
Cell Phones and Technology Devices
Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. apple watches, gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices turned off and put away in their lockers. Personal technologies and cell phones should not be on student's person in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology violations to this expectation will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plan.
Bags and Backpacks
In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all bags and backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.
Learning Logs
To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.
Toys and Valuable Items
Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.
Closed Campus
Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian with ID before 3:45 in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.
Key Contacts
Below are the counselors and administrators supporting each grade level.
Student safety, student well-being, and student learning is our top priority. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
