Cyber Safety
Greetings from HMS.
This coming Tuesday our grade eight students will attend a presentation from the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office on cyber safety. This presentation, entitled Cyber Sense, will provide our students with real-life, relatable examples of the dangers they may encounter on-line, and how they can be good digital citizens.
Our grade six and seven students will attend similar presentations in the near future.
Given that being online is part of everyday life for our students, we want to make sure we are giving them the tools they need in order to be safe and appropriate. Whether it's schoolwork, games, or social media, using the internet can bring with it positives and negatives, as well as opportunities and challenges. We believe that the best way to keep our children safe on-line is by working together.
Here are a few tips to share and talk about at home:
-
Keep personal info private. Remind your child not to share things like their full name, address, phone number, or school online.
-
Pause before posting. Encourage them to think about how a photo or comment might be seen by others before they hit “send.”
-
Use strong passwords. Help them create passwords that are hard to guess—and remind them not to share them with friends.
-
Be kind online. Words matter, even behind a screen. Talk about how to be respectful and what to do if they see or experience cyberbullying.
-
Speak up. Let your child know they can always come to you or another trusted adult if something online feels wrong or uncomfortable.
Thank you for your support in helping our students make good choices both in the "real world" and online!
HMS is Here to Help
We understand that making ends meet can be difficult for some families in our HPS community. Therefore, we want to let you know that there are individuals in each of our schools who are ready to provide information and assistance. Resources may be available to help families in times of financial need or other challenging situations. Our particular area of outreach is for food support for the upcoming holidays.
Please don’t hesitate to contact an administrator, the school nurse, or counseling personnel at your child's school if you are in need of food support for the holidays. Rest assured that your request will be managed in a way that respects your rights to confidentiality.
A Note from the Nurses
Do you have gently used clothing that is in good shape, but in need of a new home?
Please consider sending them in to our school nurses!
We could use items such as lightly used leggings, pants, sweatshirts, and/or t-shirts for students. We find having these things on hand for any unforeseen "emergencies" to be extremely helpful and would be greatly appreciated.
Donations can be delivered directly to the Nurses' Office.
Thank you.
