Dear Greeley Families,

I hope all of our Greeley mothers felt celebrated and had the opportunity to relax and recharge over Mother’s Day weekend. As we begin another exciting week at Greeley, there is so much to celebrate across our learning community.

Before anything else, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible Greeley families for the generosity, kindness, and thoughtful support you showed our staff during Staff Appreciation Week. From special treats and notes of gratitude to the many gestures that helped our team feel recognized and cared for, your partnership means so much. Our staff felt truly celebrated, and we are deeply grateful for the way this community consistently shows up for one another.

Our students are hard at work preparing for this year’s Spring Sing, which will honor the upcoming United States Semiquincentennial (our nation’s 250th birthday) through music and celebration. We are looking forward to a meaningful performance that highlights both student talent and this important milestone in our nation’s history.

Be sure to check out this week’s highlights from the art room, where our creative Gorillas have been busy exploring, designing, and expressing themselves through some impressive projects. We’re also grateful for a wonderful partnership with New Trier’s Advanced Health Care students, who have been spending time at Greeley supporting and connecting with our students. These cross-age learning experiences are a special way to build community and inspire future learners and leaders.

As we begin looking ahead to next school year, this is also a great time to check a few important items off your list before summer arrives. If you have not yet completed registration for the 2025–2026 school year, please do so as soon as possible, as early registration helps us plan thoughtfully for staffing and student placement. Families can also simplify back-to-school prep by ordering school supply kits now and checking that task off before summer begins.

Warmly,
Lindsay

Here’s what we have been up to in the art room!

3rd and 4th grade students have been working hard to create coil pots. Students learned the basics about clay such as: where it comes from, what makes it different from clays like play-doh or model magic, what the kiln is, and various techniques for hand building. Students have been exploring coils, and all the different ways you can turn them into different designs! Students were instructed to make a pot with 3 different types of coils, and apply necessary steps such as scoring and slipping.

2nd grade students have been working hard to prepare patriotic artwork for our upcoming Spring Sing. They are preparing red, white, and blue stars to celebrate the 250th birthday of The United States. We can’t wait for you to see them!

1st grade students learned about the artist Mary Blair, whose artwork was used to create Disney’s attraction “It’s a Small World”. First, students drew a blueprint of a city that they imagined and created. Then, they started to paint papers to use for collaging. Once the painted papers were dry, students cut out shapes to ‘build’ their city and bring it to life!

Kindergarten students had a lot of fun going on a texture hunt! We began class by talking about what texture is in art, and used descriptive words to identify what different items look or feel like. Students learned how to make crayon rubbings to capture different textures on their papers. We had a blast hunting for textures outside on the Greeley playground!

Summer Pet-sitting Opportunity at Adventures in Learning

ATTENTION all rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, reptiles, birds and other small animals! Winnetka's Adventures in Learning/Animal Care Class is back and looking for animals to get some love and attention from our teachers and students. If your child's small animal is due for a brief break this summer, please email Anna at animal.care.adventures@gmail.com. We can also attempt to arrange adoptions if it is time to pass your pet on to another loving family.

Lighthouse Moment from the Classroom

First graders partnered with NT students to learn more about the process of researching and writing to inform others. Our young botanists are exploring the world of plants to inform opinions about nature. The Advanced Health class created books as their final project around types of healthcare jobs from radiologist and pediatricians to opthamologists and dentists. We got to read the books and hear about how to best share facts so others can learn!
