It is so hard to believe that we have completed four (4) weeks of the 1st nine weeks. Traditional schools will be starting soon, so keep in mind that increased traffic and school buses will be on the roads soon. This may impact your morning commute to Eaton. In addition, August 19th is a district wide professional development day and Eaton is closed to students (no school for students).

As you continue enjoying your Sunday, please take time to read and review this week's newsletter. It contains information relevant to safety concerns, testing outcomes, PTA information and updates, and other items supporting Eaton.

Reminders:

We understand that our drop off line is long. However, we encourage all drivers to respect and follow basic traffic laws at the Gordon Road light. The safety of our students and families is important to us!

  • Red Light means STOP!
  • When the light is RED and cross traffic has a green light and cars are actively crossing into campus, please be patient and wait. Right turn on red ONLY if there is no in-coming traffic.
  • Eaton campus is one-lane only on entry -- two lanes upon exit. Doubling or tripling up upon entry creates an unsafe traffic pattern for all stakeholders.
  • When turning left to campus from Gordon Road or crossing Gordon Road from Netherlands Drive, please be safe and avoid blocking Gordon Road.

Grades 1-5: If coming for lunch next week, please remember you must have Level 1 orientation and assessment completed. See the section for Volunteering below for more information. Kindergarten lunch visitors will begin after Fall Intercession. Delaying lunch visits helps establish strong school based routines for students.

As always, families should monitor the school's website, facebook page, and calendar for any additional up-to-date information.

We hope each of our students, staff, and families are as

excited as we are for everyone to return to school!

Volunteering within New Hanover County Schools

  • Volunteers must schedule their support time with a staff member before coming to Eaton.

Volunteer training must be completed EVERY year for Level I -- This means that you want to come in to the school, have lunch with your student, and support students and staff! Please click the shared link and review the NHCS Volunteer Orientation and complete the Volunteer Orientation Assessment. This is Level I volunteering!

Level II: This is required every three (3) years -- this means you want to attend a field trip! This requires an application, background check and approval at district level.

Parents/Guardians: Please complete the required Annual Update to review the information we have on record for your student(s). You can also update information and request transportation. Parents who completed a new enrollment application for this school year do not need to complete the Annual Update unless information submitted in the initial application has changed. Important: If you do not see all of your students in the Student Section of the Annual Update, please contact Ms. Liverman before proceeding.

Attendance Matters! We are 23 days into this school year and have seen an approximate 5% dip in overal attendance. Keep in mind that data indicates two (2) days per month for any reason suggests chronic absenteeism and impacts learning outcomes. We understand illness impacts attendance - please review to the shared document from the nurse regarding when to and when not to attend school due to illness.

Please take a peek at attendance data per grade level for August 10-14:
  • Kindergarten: 95.48%
  • 1st Grade: 96.81%
  • 2nd Grade: 93.46%
  • 3rd Grade: 95.57%
  • 4th Grade: 97.04%
  • 5th Grade: 85.29%

Our schoolwide attendance was 94.12% for the week. Four of six grade levels showed growth in attendance - this is awesome! We meet this week's goal of over 94%! Congratulations!

Anne Matney / School Counselor

It's time once again to start up the Staff Coffee Cart at Eaton. The coffee cart is a once-a-month treat for Eaton staff, headed up by the 5th grade Service Club, where Mrs. Matney and Service Club students visit all of the classrooms to offer teachers a cup of coffee and a small snack. We are very thankful to the PTA and parents who support this service project through donations of items to stock the cart. If you would be willing to send in items for the cart, please click on the provided link. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Matney. Thank you!

Ms. Matney would also appreciate item donations for the school store where students at the end of each nine weeks can 'shop' for items using their Olympian Dollars. These items can range from small items to larger items as staff will have various price ranges for students. Most needed items include medium and large items (jump rope, nerf-type balls, hula hoops, etc). Donations may be dropped off at the front office for Ms. Matney. Thank you, in advance, for your support.

The parent/guardian will need to bring the medication to school and check it into the nurse office. Medication(s) must be FDA approved, in an unopened original container from the store or in the current pharmacy dispensed bottle. Please see Nurse Roberts if you have questions.

NEW / Chipmunk Application

Chipmunk will replace the district’s current Edulog Parent Portal bus tracking app. Chipmunk will function similarly to track your school bus. It will tell you where the bus is, when it will arrive at your child’s stop, and provide alerts that may affect your rider.

The best way to track your bus is by downloading the NEW Chipmunk Bus Tracking App. The App provides secure, personalized bus information so you can see your student's bus in real time. It also notifies you of scheduled pickup and drop-off times, as well as any bus substitutions.

  • Chipmunk How-To Brochure (English)
  • Chipmunk How-To Brochure (Spanish)

Please note: Only student contacts with an email address listed in your student's Infinite Campus account are eligible to enroll.
