Principal Message
September 2026
Dear Families,
Happy September, and let me open with news worth celebrating. The State of Colorado released last year's end-of-year CMAS results, and our campus earned a Performance rating, the highest rating a school can receive in this state. It was awarded under our former name, Flynn, but there should be no confusion about whose achievement it is. It belongs to the students sitting in our classrooms right now and to the teachers standing in front of them. Congratulations to you, and congratulations to your children.
It confirms what those of us in the building already knew. This school is filled with bright, hard-working kids, and that standard did not stay behind with the old name. It walked through our doors with them. We are not starting from scratch at The Uplands. We are starting from strength.
One note on how I plan to communicate with you this year. You can expect a message like this one from me at least once a month, laying out what is coming so nothing catches your family by surprise. I will also keep every message posted on our school website, so if you ever need to go back and find a date or a detail, it will be there waiting for you.
With pride,
Dr. Chism

The Full School and District Calendar
The dates above are the highlights. For everything else, including district-wide events and any changes that come up during the month, our school and district calendar is the place to look. It is worth bookmarking.
An Attendance Challenge
Any student who finishes September with 90% attendance or better will receive free tickets to a Colorado Rapids game. Getting your child here every day is the single biggest thing you can do for their learning, and this month it also comes with soccer.
Student IDs
- Student IDs are part of our dress code for students levels 6-8. Students need to have their ID visible during the school day.
- After the second ID, there is a $5 charge for each new one.
- If your student rides the bus, we encourage them to let us know they need an ID before the end of the day, if they lost it, so we can be sure they have one to get on the bus.
Free & Reduced-Price Meal Application
- Please complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application online. It helps your family and supports our school, and every application makes a difference.
- Families who complete it by October 1st will receive a $20 discount on fees
- You can fill it out using the button below.
Cell Phones and "The Battle for Your Time"
A reminder that Westminster Public Schools is cell phone-free from the first morning bell to the final dismissal bell, and that includes passing periods, recess, and lunch.
At Back to School Night, Westminster High School shared a TEDx Talk with families that is worth passing along again. In "The Battle for Your Time: Exposing the Costs of Social Media," Dino Ambrosi walks through how much time young people spend on social media and the intentional design behind the platforms competing for their attention. It is a worthwhile watch for any parent, and it speaks directly to why we are working to build a school where students can be present, connected, and engaged.
Join the District Accountability Advisory Committee (DAAC)
WPS is inviting parents and guardians from across the district to join the 2026-27 District Accountability Advisory Committee, and I would love to see The Uplands well represented.
DAAC brings together parents, educators, community members, and district leaders to give input on district priorities, including student success, improvement efforts, budget priorities, and family engagement. It meets only four times during the school year, so it is a real opportunity to be heard without a heavy time commitment.
If you tried to apply earlier and the link did not work, it has been fixed and is working now.

The best way to see what a day at The Uplands actually looks like is to follow along. We post photos, highlights, and reminders throughout the week.

Estimadas Familias,

Teléfonos celulares y "The Battle for Your Time"
