Our Canned Food Drive kicked off this week. Our 5th grade committee has been busy sorting and counting the canned goods as we work to reach our goal of 6,000 items! It’s the season of giving and we are so grateful for all of the donations that have come in already!

Here’s a glimpse into PE this week. Kids were working on balance and coordination with balloons and learning the fundamentals of hockey. Our students are so fortunate to have extended PE time this year as it allows for more movement and skill building!

In support of our Character Trait of the Month (Gratitude), our PAC has helped to assemble a winter display in our building. Students and staff were able to write what they are grateful for on the snowflakes - it definitely adds cheer to our school! In addition, classrooms filled up their gratitude jars for the ways in which they are grateful.

Inclement Weather Reminders/School Closures Inclement Weather Reminders/School Closures

With the falling leaves and the changing temperatures, before long it will once again be time to plan for possible inclement weather days. In the event of school closures or delays related to weather, our district will use the following methods of communication:

  • ParentSquare– This is a school-to-home communication tool that will send district or school-level alerts, newsletters, or announcements to the parent/guardian information on file with the school. If your email address or phone number has changed, please update your contact information with your child’s school office.

  • District Website – All high-priority alerts will be posted to the main SSD website (look for a red or green alert bar at the top of the page).

  • District Social Media – The District is on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sherwoodschooldistrict88J or on Twitter at twitter.com/SherwoodSD

  • FlashAlert – All emergency alerts and inclement weather closures/delays will be broadcast via FlashAlert. This is a free subscription service that alerts users via text or app notifications. Sign up at www.flashalert.net/signup or by downloading the FlashAlert app on your smartphone. If you have signed up for FlashAlert previously, please sign in to make sure your subscription is current. If you are not subscribed to our channel, you can search for “Sherwood Sch. Hawks View 2024-2025 Parent/Student Handbook Addendum Hawks View 2024-2025 Parent/Student Handbook Addendum

Please view the updated Parent/Student Handbook Addendum for 2024-2025 here. It can also be found on the Hawks View website under the School Info tab, and then Student Body Handbooks.

I want to draw your attention to the section regarding homework, as it pertains to absences. We realize that some families extend vacations during the holidays. Please know that teachers are not required to gather and send work for students to do while on vacation. Below is the language from the Handbook:

When a child is missing school for a family vacation, the teacher may decide whether sending home classroom activities and missed homework is relevant and/or appropriate. Parents should communicate and give teachers advanced notice regarding any planned absences.
