OHVA Learning Coach Academy 25-26
Module 3
We All Belong, and YOU are Valued!
We A.R.E. OHVA!
The expectations of our students and learning coaches (LC's) is high, and full of Accountability, Respect, and Engagement (high participation).
You are Valued, You Belong!
Each student and LC is valued and respected among administrators, teachers, staff and volunteers at OHVA. You are important! Every student and LC belongs to a system of education that values you and your contribution!
Each student has ability to grow academically. It is important to believe in the student's ability to grow, so that they to can belong! They too can feel their value and discover their gifts.
Why Learning Coach Academy?
Become an awesome Learning Coach!
The Learning Coach Academy 'Growing to Guide:'
- Provides modules to complete online to inform and prepare you about all things OHVA. Start with any module that would be helpful to you throughout the school year.
- Shares recorded videos and online sessions on helpful topics for busy Learning Coaches - new and/or veteran LC's.
- Offers live sessions for mental health and other topics.
- Gives recognition for our hard-working Learning Coaches. Who doesn't like a surprise in the mail? Let us celebrate your learning with you, just as your student grows this year, too.
How Does My Student Work in the Online School?
The Student Logs In
The student logs in to their K12/OHVA platform with their username and password. The student will click on their calendar to see the live sessions for the day. They will then go to Dashboard and click on each course to see the online assignments for the day in the Modules. There is also an upcoming assignment and live session reminder on the right side of the Home page. The live sessions are most important. They work in the assignments in the courses either concurrent with, before, or after the live sessions as directed by their teacher at each level. There are drop boxes or attachments for MS and HS students to submit. At the lower levels, there are external programs that will be listed on the Assignments with links for the student (such as Reading Eggs and Moby Max Math) to record how the students are doing.
Please take your teachers' direction and work with them on any problems in the school platform (Canvas).
The Legal Guardian(s) and Learning Coach(es) are Accountable!
Continuous Internet is our tool for learning - please find a way even if your Internet goes out at home - libraries, hot spots, cafes and eateries, often have free Internet available if your home Internet isn't working.
Excellence is the K12 curriculum, periodic formative assessments, State of Ohio summative assessments. We have Live Classes, teacher-directed apps for reading, math, and organization (other instructional tools, specific to my student’s academic requirements). Students will be required to attend and participate in Live Class sessions on a daily basis (schedule determined at each grade level).
Active daily Learning Coach guidance is essential for students in the K-8 program and also needed on a regular basis in high school. The full dimensions of our K12-powered program are pivotal to the learning experience.
Student supervision may wane as the student becomes more responsible for themselves at higher levels, however the LC is still responsible for the home aspects of student education. The patterns of study are for life! They are life skills all of us will value; therefore LC supervision is a requirement.
OHVA is not Homeschooling ~ It is Public School, Done from Home!
My student is enrolled in a public school and must meet the state attendance requirements. Students in grades K-12 require a minimum of 920 hours per year (full year's enrollment). To reach my student’s academic goals, average daily attendance may range from 5 to 8 hours. It is a partnership between highly qualified teachers, the school, the student, and the learning coach.
BE SURE TO RECORD DAILY ATTENDANCE! As the Learning Coach, I am responsible to accurately record attendance and progress daily in my student’s LMS to reflect online and offline school work. I will keep a written record of offline school work hours. Insufficient hours recorded in the system over time is a truancy issue and could result in my student’s removal from OHVA.
LEARN THOSE LIFE SKILLS! SHOWING UP FOR TESTING, FACE TO FACE EVENTS (4 PER YEAR) AND ONLINE WORK are some of those life skills. My student will participate in all required state achievement and diagnostic testing. It is my responsibility to provide transportation to and from the test site(s). Testing dates are determined by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW).
COMMUNICATION IS KEY! LC Communication will make or break your student's experience. I will actively engage with OHVA staff by participating in conferences, reading email on a daily basis, submit requested assignments, and attend face-to-face (F2F) activities throughout the year, including state testing, and ETR and IEP meetings as required. If I have designated another person to act as Learning Coach for my student, I will conference jointly with the Learning Coach and OHVA teacher(s).
I will work with and treat administrators, teachers, staff, and volunteers professionally, understanding that staff must follow set schedules and policies. WORK WITH KINDNESS AT ALL TIMES!
Learning Coach Logging Attendance Daily!
Daily Attendance - Adding ALL factors of participation
Learning Coaches should add together live sessions, online assignments, and offline reading or project time. After the online work is done, the family may add supplemental family time (things the family does together related to life and learning). See below for documents that explain.
All face to face events, clubs, and virtual adventures for OHVA and K12 activities may be logged under the closest topic, or split between two or three topics if applicable. F2F events should include travel time to and from the event and should be logged under the closest topic as well. Example: History Geeks events (History or Social Science, maybe some Science and Reading/ELA as well).
Thank you!
Here's How to Log Attendance
The search bar at help.k12.com is the most comprehensive resource to share how to log attendance in Canvas. Be sure to add both academic time and supplemental family time. Supplemental time related to the curriculum is added to the attendance after the day's assignments are done. Keep a log of what you do and share it with your teachers! (Projects, nature shows, local field trips, walks, athletics, etc.)
A sample attendance sheet is attached.
Testing Schedules and Responsibilities at OHVA
Ohio Required State Testing at OHVA 2025-2026
OHVA Required Testing for 25-26
This link leads to another newsletter that tells all about your learning coach responsibilities for testing students.
- Online Testing. There are required online tests at the first and middle of the year to assess where the students are in their progress and along with other video and audio formats, are usually done quarterly by the teachers.
- The Face to Face testing is required. Parents without steady transportation should develop ways to get to the testing sites by asking family, friends, and trusted people who can take the student to testing. There are places for learning coaches to quietly play, sit, study with other siblings, or they may drop the student off and come back.
- Please reach out to your school counselor or homeroom teacher AT LEAST a week ahead of your testing date if transportation is a problem, and they will refer you for testing transportation assistance. Thank you!

Our New Program for Social-Emotional Growth
Did you know Ohio has state standards for social and emotional growth, just like for academics?
We are excited to announce that our new Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program for the upcoming school year will be CharacterStrong! This program will be replacing 7 Mindsets as we continue to strengthen and grow our SEL initiatives.
CharacterStrong offers engaging, research-based curriculum and resources that align with our goals of fostering meaningful relationships, character development, and whole-student wellness. We believe this transition will bring fresh energy and impact to our SEL efforts for both students and staff. Please click the button below to learn more about PBIS and SEL!
