Letter From Our Principal
Dear Families,
It has been a great start to the school year, we have loved getting to know our new Wolves and reconnecting with our returning students. During the first few weeks of school we place a strong emphasis on teaching students routines and expectations that support a safe and civil school environment.
One routine that we are implementing school wide is called “civil dismissal”. The intent of civil dismissal is to establish a safe and orderly exit from any space in our school including the classroom and lunch room. Our staff revisited this expectation in a training facilitated by team leaders in August. We believe a renewed and school wide commitment to this has many benefits including staggering the number of students entering the hallway and creating an environment of respect.
Another area of focus this month is setting an expectation for a civil environment, which is part of the “Wolf Way” at MMS. To create a place where “every Wolf belongs” we are dedicating time to setting clear expectations about how to treat others in our school with acceptance and respect. Both Mr. Davidson and myself will be visiting each classroom this week to review school expectations for safety and civility with a strong emphasis on how we treat others and ways to report and get support if a student is in conflict or is experiencing bullying.
Our work to create a safe and civil school is more effective when we partner with families. We hope you take a few minutes this week to talk with students about civil dismissal and the “Wolf Way”.
Warmly,
Amy Montgomery
MMS Attendance Office Tips
Excusing Absences & Late Arrivals
If your student is absent from school due to illness, appointment, or occasional family/personal reasons, please use one of the following three ways to excuse your student:
Call the direct attendance line at (253) 891-5210 and leave a message at any time.
Email students name and absence reason to joelle_atkins@sumnersd.org
Send a parent or doctor’s note with your student to school upon their return and make sure they turn it into the attendance office.
Please be advised: If your student is an athlete, they must return with a doctor/dental note to be eligible to participate.
(As a reminder, school starts Mondays at 9:05am and Tuesday-Friday at 7:25am)
Early Dismissals
We understand there are occasions where you will need to pick up your student early during the school day. The following options are available for an early dismissal:
Send a note with your student the day of early dismissal and have them bring it to the attendance office before school starts. They will be given a dismissal slip and will meet you out in front of the school at the designated time.
Come into the attendance office and sign your student out. We must have a parent, guardian or emergency contact signature. The student will be called out of class at that time.

See below for the student drop off and pick up routes.
Attention 6th Grade Families: Planner
We will be using planners this year to help your students get and stay organized. Each student has been given a planner and should have begun to use them. Each day, the four content areas (math, science, ELA, and social studies), will write in them together during class. If your student is unsure if they have homework or not, this would be a great place to check. If you have not had the opportunity to check these out, you could ask to see your student’s planner. It would also be helpful if you could encourage them to have it with them daily as we build strong organizational skills to be successful in middle school.
