Mustang Update

Congratulations are in order for our 2025 King and Queen of Courts – Mr. Cayden Dummermuth and Ms. Maddy Hanke! The two were crowned during halftime ceremonies at the Valley Heights – Republic County basketball game. Our KAYS organization, under the direction of Mrs. Caley Gallimore, planned a week of dress-up activities, a Friday pep assembly and our Winter Formal to celebrate this event! KAYS members had the commons all decorated for the dance and Mrs. Gallimore said that our students had a great time at the dance! Special thanks are in order for Dino and Shannon Conti who provided the DJ services and to Aron and Tiffany DeWalt who helped sponsor the dance!

Senior Jayden DeWalt was recognized during the game with Hanover for setting some records during our football season! During the 2024 season Jayden rushed for 1625 yards and 25 touchdowns that ranks him 3rd all time as a Mustang! For his career Jayden logged 3749 yards and 54 touchdowns which places him 2nd overall! Jayden set new marks for all-purpose yards for both a season and a career! The new mark for season yards is 1918 and for a career – 4908. Congratulations!

Our junior high basketball season is complete! The boys team had a successful season and placed 2nd in the BVL Tournament! The girls played hard all season as well and placed 3rd in the BVL Tournament! Both teams showed a lot of improvement over the course of the year! Congratulations to our coaches – Alex Nolte, Kayla Heinen, Mandy Meadows and Trayton Claycamp for a job well done! Our junior high students can now take a few weeks off before we start the track season.

FFA Week is just around the corner!! Events start on February 17th with PJ and Dress-Up Day with the staff and students playing hourly Ag. Trivia. Tuesday is the always popular Anything but a Backpack Day. Wednesday is Country Club Day. This is also their Community Pancake Feed (7:00 am – 9:00 am) and Staff Lunch Day! We would like to invite our community members to join us for the pancake breakfast and to take the opportunity to see some of the improvements that have been made to the classroom and shop area! Thursday will be busy!! They have planned a FFA shirt/Purple Out Day, Drive Your Tractor to School Day, 7th Grade FFA Fair and the FFAmily Night!

We are down to just two regular season home games for high school basketball! On February 14th we host Frankfort and on February 21st we host Onaga. Come on out and support our Mustangs as we gear up for post-season play!!

Parents – We will be hosting our Student Success Meetings on Monday, February 17th and Thursday, February 20th. The times are 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm. This is an open house event with staff ready to visit with you about your child’s progress in their classes. We would really like to see all of you during one or both of those nights!

Parents – Please remember that we have a Professional Development Day on February 24th so – No School for our students!

Just like every school in our area we are fending off the cold and flu bug! It seems like we have had a handful of students gone each day since we started back to school in January. We have also had just about every staff member stay home for several days dealing with the coughing, congestion, fevers and headaches. We even survived one day with myself answering the phone! A big word of thanks to our staff for filling in when we needed classes covered and to our substitutes who stepped up to take care of classes that needed coverage! Please remember, that if your child is displaying any flu like symptoms please call them in as absent and maybe, just maybe, we can slow this cycle down!

Have a great week and Let’s go Mustangs!

This week's featured artist is Senior, Tessa Miller. She is showcasing her impressive graphite rendering of two hands clasped together, beautifully illustrating foreshortening and depth. The title is "The Beginning of Love." Also pictured below is Tessa working on her acrylic painting. Tessa is excellent at capturing realism and has great attention to detail. Her favorite part about art is trying new mediums and discovering what she can do with a variety of art tools.

Senior of the Week-Khloe Gunn Senior of the Week-Khloe Gunn

LIVE IN THE PRESENT.

Khloe Suzann Gunn was born August 8, 2007 to Emily and Tim Gunn. Khloe is the younger sister of Maecyn and goes on to explain that her sister has had the biggest impact on her life. “She is the most humble, kind person and I hope to have the heart she does. She has always supported me, and pushed me to meet my goals; never allowing me to fall short or give up.” When she leaves the Valley Heights community, Khloe hopes she is remembered as someone who was honest, dedicated, and selfless.

Outside of Valley Heights you can find Khloe working at the after school program and attending the United Presbyterian Church. “I enjoy helping all ages of people and connecting with my community through children and the elderly.” Khloe’s ideal Friday night would be hanging out with her friends while driving what seems like every backroad in Marshall county, just listening to music and laughing.

Next fall, Khloe plans to attend the University of Kansas to obtain a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree. In ten years Khloe sees herself with a family as well as with dogs. She goes on explaining, “I want to have a job that I love, and I also want to be able to not only provide for my family but also be able to give back to my community.” Some future dreams and goals Khloe hopes to attain are to visit all 50 states along with 20 countries, she also wants to participate in meaningful research projects and advancements in college that will help improve medicine.

An accomplishment that Khloe is most proud of would be the leadership roles she has achieved such as NHS president, FACS president, and FACS vice president for 1 year. Cheer captain and Art club officer for 2 years, Khloe feels it shows that her peers and adults see qualities of a good leader.

Khloe has been involved in Art, KAY’s, All School Play, FACS, Mustang Mentor, and Cheer for four years; NHS, StuCo, FCA, Volleyball, and Dance for two years; and Journalism one year. One final thought Khloe wants to leave the underclassmen with is, “Focus on each other instead of yourself. It's easy to tell your friends you have too much going on to hangout because you're busy or have homework, but being around your peers will give you a lifetime of good memories. Don't worry so much about the future, instead live in the present.”
