The Cannon Connection
2024-2025 Newsletter for Cannon Elementary Families
September 1-7, 2024
Good morning, and Happy September, Cannon families,
We had an amazing Beginning of Year Pep Rally to celebrate National College Day as well as pump up our staff and scholars to meet our STRETCH goals this year! A big shout out to our STEMbassador leadership group for leading their first event! Thank you Mrs. Hagar and Coach Hood for igniting our Cannon culture focused on purpose, innovation, and community!
As a reminder Monday, September 2 is Labor Day; No School for Students or Staff!
🎙 Our KCAN live morning announcements begin Tuesday, September 3! Our 4th and 5th grade news anchors and Mrs. Crowder are excited to begin with our first KCAN Morning News Crew! Please make sure your scholar arrives to school on time by 7:40 each morning so that they can hear our school announcements! As a reminder, breakfast services ends each morning at 7:40 and students are tardy starting at 7:41.
🐾 🍱 Skyward Approved Lunch Visitors Begin Tuesday, September 3 - Loved ones may eat with their Cub ONLY on the banquet side - no friends. All visitors are expected to visibly wear their visitor badge during the entirety of the lunch visit, and please make sure to clean up your area after eating. Make sure to head toward the office to leave at the end of lunch; Instructional time is in progress and this is not a time to walk around. As a reminder, lunch visitors may not take pictures with our our Cannon scholars in the background. Lunch Times: Kinder-10:50-11:20; First-11:10-11:40; Second-11:30-12:00; Third-11:50-12:20; Fourth-12:20-12:50; Fifth-12:50-1:20
At Cannon, our learning management expectations are referred to as Cub PRIDE (Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Empathy). We believe in growing strong character so that our scholars are prepared to be great local citizens. Please discuss your expectations for our Cubs to always make good choices! The choices our students make impact so many people; whether that results in clogged toilets or Mr. Jose having to clean up after our little ones. It it important for us to partner and discuss what is unacceptable at home is also unacceptable at school. Each year our plumbing becomes an issue because of poor bathroom etiquette. Please help us by discussing this example of poor Cub Pride with your Cub!
Safety Dismissal Update - If you are planning to have your child go home with a different ride, or friend, they must have the blue car tag or they can park and go to the front office for driver's license verification. At your request and verification, we are happy to print extra blue car tags, please reach out to Tahle Cox and Brenda Esparza in the front office for assistance. As always thank you for partnering with us for the safety of all of our students and staff.
Fifth grade parents, due to some "Rooms" communication barriers, we have received approval to extend our first deposit for our Sky Ranch adventure. 🏕 Deposit Extension - Friday, September 13 - 5th grade Sky Ranch Deposit Due - $120 (total cost of camp = $230); https://gcisdschools.revtrak.net/elementary-schools/can/cannon-sky-ranch/#/list

Messages from our Cannon PTA
Signing up for the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) does NOT mean you are signing up to volunteer; it means you support our school community by being a member! Please sign up!
We NEED your Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Support!
We need ALL of our Cannon community to participate in our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Calendar Fundraiser. It's simple - Pick a Day and Pay that Amount! You can select a day (or more). We need to fill up a calendar for each classroom teacher, specials teacher, and our special services teachers. We know our public schools need our help - The aim of our PTA is to fundraise sufficient funds to support our teachers and our Cubs. Prizes will be awarded to each grade-level reaching our $2,000 goal and the top earning class in each grade level will also receive a prize! Our PTA must fundraise to create a budget to support our school. Our PTA does so much for our students, but without a budget we will not be able to fulfill and support our school needs.
The grade level with the largest contribution will have a popsicle party and teachers will Pie in the administrative team in the face! The class in each grade level with the largest contribution will enjoy a silly string party!
Fee Notifications
On September 16, the district will activate fee notifications in Skyward for the 2024-2025 school year. These fees support classes they are assigned to by providing funds for materials used by the students and to enhance and enrich their learning experience. Fees may be paid with a credit or debit card through Skyward. To pay by cash or check, please bring your payment to the front office and turn it into the campus bookkeeper. Ensure your child’s name and the class fee you are paying are attached to your payment. If you have questions regarding a class fee, please contact the teacher of that class.
GCISD Receives High Marks in Efficiency Audit Required for VATRE
Visit GCISD’s VATRE Information Page
The audit analyzed GCISD's academic, financial and operational performance in comparison to similar districts. Auditors highlighted that GCISD received an "A" in the state’s accountability ratings, an "A" in the state’s financial ratings, and demonstrated an average daily attendance higher than both peer districts and the state average.
According to the auditors, “When all of the data was pulled together for the report, we concluded that, with respect to all of the eight peer districts, GCISD efficiently uses its resources and would be good stewards of increased tax revenue as a result of this M&O tax rate increase, but that would be for voters to decide in November.”
Read the full story here and learn more about the VATRE at www.GCISD.net/VATRE.
Happy or Not is Back!
The GCISD Nutrition Department are excited to introduce the new and improved version of the Happy or Not device as part of our ongoing efforts to gather valuable student feedback on our school lunches. Over the past few years, this device has traveled through the district, offering essential insights into our menu choices. The key question we’re asking is, “How was your lunch today?” Please see the attached instruction sheet for the two part survey.
Understanding our students' preferences helps us better meet their needs, and the Happy or Not device makes it fun and easy for students to share their thoughts with just the press of a button. We’ll be collecting this feedback at Cannon September 9-20th.
